1 BED MOBILITY Aim To safely and effectively teach and supervise a Service User undertaking prescribed functional exercise To enable Service User to practice moving in bed and sitting up in bed Turning in Bed Procedure 1. Check plan for variation, equipment used and number of repetitions. 2. Explain the reason for the exercise: e.g. this exercise is to help you to be able to turn over in bed. 3. Position of service user On the bed, lying flat - head supported by pillow(s). Knees bent with feet flat on the bed. 4. Position of Rehabilitation Assistant - check plan Standing facing the service user at the side of the bed on to which the service user intends to turn. You may need to place hands on the hips and shoulders at the beginning of the movement. 5. Explain how to perform the exercise; you are going to slowly roll to the left/right. You will need to slightly lift your bottom away from the direction you are going. You will then roll your knees and turn to look in the direction you are going, bring your shoulders over as you do so. If you are struggling I may need to physically assist you 6. Ready... Lift your bottom and roll your knees (**) look the way you are going and bring your shoulders through. ** Through this exercise you may need to use hands on at the hips/thighs and shoulders to help with this movement. Through the exercise there should be verbal prompting and encouragement with correction when the exercise is not being done properly. Watch for fatigue. If the Service User is unable to turn with hands on assistance STOP and feedback to registered practitioner.
2 7. On completion feedback to the Service User. Check the Service User is comfortable and not in pain. Seek feedback from service user regarding the activity. 8. Document in the Service User s notes. 9. Feedback clearly to Registered Practitioner who has delegated that task regarding how the service user did, how easy the exercises were and any pain or discomfort. Lying to Sitting Procedure 1. Check plan for variation, number of repetitions and equipment used (e.g. bed lever, monkey pole etc). 2. Explain the reason for the exercise; this exercise is to help you to regain the ability to sit up over the edge of the bed from lying in bed by yourself. 3. Position of Service User: Lying in bed on your side, with knees, at the edge of the bed, bent facing the direction you intend to go (usually to affected side). 4. Position of Rehabilitation Assistant: check plan Stand facing the service user (on the same side of the bed to which the service user intends to sit-up). You may need to place hands on the hips/thighs and shoulders to help with this movement. 5. Explain how to do the exercise; you need to turn on the bed to face the direction you are going with knees bent. Put your top hand out in front onto the bed.you will need to use your top hand and lower arm (**) to push your body up and then swing your legs out (**) over the side of the bed. If you are struggling I may physically assist you. 6. Ready Turn in bed to face the direction you are going, bend your knees and put your top hand on the bed in front of you.... Using your top hand and lower arm, push your body up and swing your legs out. ** Through this exercise you may need to place hands on the hips/thighs and shoulders to help with this movement, as per manual handling training and plan.
3 Through the exercise there should be verbal prompting and encouragement with correction when the exercise is not being done properly. Watch out for fatigue. 7. On completion feedback to the Service User. Check the Service User is comfortable and not in pain. 8. Document in the Service User s notes. 9. Feedback clearly to the Registered Practitioner who has delegated that task regarding how the Service User did, how easy the exercises were and any pain or discomfort
