1 LEG EXERCISES 1 Am To be able to teach and supervse a servce user undertakng prescrbed leg exercses To be able to recognse the sgns of muscle fatgue Thngs to note Sgns of fatgue shakng, tredness, achng, poor co-ordnaton Compensatory movements watch for servce users movng other body parts.e. unexercsed leg n order to make the exercse easer. Isolatng the area beng exercsed use block, rolls, pllows, or towels to fx and solate the area beng targeted. Statc Quadrceps (SQ) /Inner range of Quadrceps (IRQ) Straght Leg Rase (SLR) Procedure 1. Check plan for varaton, equpment used and number of repettons 2. Explan the reason for the exercse; these are exercses to strengthen the muscles at the front of your thgh, whch are mportant n daly actvtes. You wll need to le down on your bed to do these (or need to put both legs on the sofa) 3. Poston the Servce User on the bed, lyng flat head supported by a pllow(s) or lyng sem-recumbent well supported by pllows. SQ may need a rolled towel under the knee (see plan) IRQ wll need a thck rolled towel or smlar so the knee s bent to 30 flexon (unless otherwse stated) SLR no equpment generally needed (may need to put your hand under the Servce Users knee). 4. Poston of Rehabltaton Assstant On the sde to be exercsed, facng the bed/sofa so t s possble to watch the Servce User s face as well as the Servce User s legs. You should place one hand just above the Servce User s affected knee (on the quadrceps) so as to provde a touch stmulus and to be able to feel any contracton.

2 5. Explan how to perform the exercse SQ Pull your toes up towards you and tghten your knee hard so that your knee straghtens fully. If usng hand/rolled towel squash my hand/rolled towel by tghtenng your knee IRQ pull your toes up and now slowly straghten your knee so your heel lfts off the bed /sofa, keepng the back of your knee on the towel SLR you need to tghten your knee hard so your knee s fully straghtened, pull your toes towards you and keepng your knee stff and straght lft your whole leg off the bed Ready SQ tghten your knee hard (so you squash my hand) IRQ straghten your knee hard and lft heel off the bed/sofa SLR tghten your knee hard keep t tght and lft your leg up from the bed. Breathe n through your nose and out through your mouth durng each exercse. DO NOT hold your breath Throughout the exercse there should be verbal promptng and encouragement wth correcton when the exercse s not beng done properly. Count repettons for the servce user and tell them when to rest. 7. On completon feedback to the servce user and seek feedback from them. Check the Servce User s all rght and not n pan. 8. Document n the servce user s notes. 9. Feedback clearly to the Regstered Practtoner who has delegated that task regardng how the servce user dd, how easy the exercses were and any pan or dscomfort Quadrceps through range Procedure 1. Check plan for varaton, equpment used and number of repettons 2. Explan the reason for ths exercse; ths exercse s to strengthen the front thgh muscles. You wll need to st down for ths exercse. 3. Poston of the Servce User Sttng n a straght backed char (preferably a dnng char) Ensure the thgh s supported, hps and knees at 90 degrees and foot s on the floor. 4. Poston of the Rehabltaton Assstant On sde to be exercsed

3 You may need to place one hand on the thgh just above the servce user s affected knee to feel muscle contracton and fatgue as well as provdng sensory renforcement. 5. Explan how to perform the exercse; you are gong to straghten your knee fully, keepng your thgh on the char You need to do repettons 6. Ready Keepng your thgh on the char straghten your knee fully, now slowly return your foot to the floor and return to your startng poston Through the exercse there should be verbal promptng and encouragement wth correcton when the exercse s not beng done properly. Count repettons for the servce user and tell them when to rest. 7. On completon feedback to the servce user. Check the servce user s all rght and not n pan. 8. Document n the servce user s notes. 9. Feedback clearly to the Regstered Practtoner who has delegated that task regardng how the servce user dd, how easy the exercses were and any pan or dscomfort Small knee bends Procedure 1. Check plan for varaton, equpment used and number of repettons 2. Explan the reason for the exercse; ths exercse s to strengthen your thgh, buttock and calf muscles. 3. Poston of Servce User Standng wth a char behnd and f ndcated a supportng surface n front e.g. table, char back Check the plan for the level of supervson requred (e.g. hand on by Rehabltaton Assstant or servce user restng hand on supportng surface). 4. Poston of Rehabltaton Assstant Check plan for detal. Ether to affected sde or n front (standng) 5. Explan how to perform the exercse; ether (a) you are gong to slowly bend your knees as f you are startng to st down or (b) you are gong to

4 bend your knees and stck your bottom out as f you are sttng down. Your shoulders wll come forward to balance you. Encourage servce user untl they have squatted as far as ndcated n the plan Breathe n through your nose and out through your mouth durng each exercse. DO NOT hold your breath You need to do ths tmes 6. Ready Instruct wth ether a) or b) above as per plan. 7. On completon feedback to the servce user. Check the servce user s all rght and not n pan. 8. Document n the servce user s notes. 9. Feedback clearly to the Regstered Practtoner who has delegated that task regardng how the servce user dd, how easy the exercses were and any pan or dscomfort Forward step ups Procedure 1. Check plan for varaton, any equpment used (e.g. manual handlng belt) and number of repettons. 2. Explan the reason for the exercse; ths exercse s to help strengthen your leg muscles. I wll need you to go to the bottom of the stars for ths exercse. Ensure the servce users footwear s well fttng and n a sutable condton. 3. Poston of Servce User At the bottom of the stars, facng the stars Check plan for nstructons e.g. f the servce user s to hold onto the ral Check plan for use of manual handlng belt 4. Poston of Rehabltaton Assstant On the sde to be exercsed,facng the servce user so t s possble to watch the servce user s face as well as the servce user s legs. (If the stars are narrow you may need to stand behnd the servce user).

Explan how to perform the exercse (and demonstrate as ths helps to clarfy): You need to place your (rght/left) foot onto the frst step (ths s the leg to be strengthened) then step up to brng the other foot up too. Keep your body uprght throughout. Then you wll step back down, wth control, keepng the leg you are strengthenng on the step. Fnally brng that leg down. Keep lookng forwards, not down at your feet. 6. Ready... Keep your body uprght and place your left/rght foot on the step. Now step up and brng your other foot up. Now, slowly, step down. Ensure the servce user puts ther feet fully onto the step. Breathe n through your nose and out through your mouth durng each exercse. DO NOT hold your breath. Throughout the exercse there should be verbal promptng and verbal encouragement, wth correcton when the exercse s not beng done properly. Count the repettons foe the servce user and tell them when to rest. If they are showng sgns of fatgue be prepared to stop and allow them to rest. 7. On completon feedback to the servce user. Check the servce user s all rght and not n pan. 8. Document n the servce user s notes. 9. Feedback clearly to the Regstered Practtoner who has delegated that task regardng how the servce user dd, how easy the exercses were and any pan or dscomfort
