1 FITTING A RAISED TOILET SEAT Aim To be aware of correct fitting of, and be able to correctly fit, a raised toilet seat To practise safe transfers with Service User Raised Toilet Seats These are plastic extensions fitted to the toilet pan to enable a Service User to get up and down more easily. They are fitted in place by brackets, according to the manufacturer s instructions and are available in 2, 4 and 6 heights depending on the height of the Service User. The toilet seat is not to be used to support more than 152kg / 335lb / 24 st. All parts can be cleaned with soap and hot water (up to 90 C /195 F) or a household disinfectant. People with difficulty getting on and off low seats find them beneficial and they are essential for people with total hip replacements to assist on and off the toilet and reduce the risk of dislocation. Procedure 1. Check in notes or with the Registered Practitioner whether a 2, 4 or 6 seat is required and take to Service User s home (unless already delivered). 2. Explain reason for equipment i.e. this equipment is designed to make it easier for you to get on and off your toilet. 3. Fitting: check that the seat is not damaged and has all plastic covers on brackets. Follow the manufacturer s instructions to install correctly (and leave these with Service User): Lift Service User s own seat up to expose the porcelain rim. Place the RTS on to the toilet, if it is not a tight fit, loosen the wing nuts and adjust the brackets so the seat fits tightly on the rim and then tighten the wing nuts. Ensure the RTS is fitted firmly and will not move when sat on, sit on the toilet seat yourself to check.

2 If the RTS will not fit on the Service User s toilet, do not attempt to fit it over the plastic seat report back to the Registered Practitioner for advice. Once fitted wash your hands. 4. Practice transfer with Service User if instructed to do so as plan. NB The Service User should be made aware that the seat has been adjusted to fit their own specific toilet and should not be removed until it is no longer needed or unless really necessary. If it is removed it should be lifted by the brackets on the outside of the seat to ensure that the protective plastic covers do not become loose. 5. Document in the Service User s notes. 6. Feedback clearly to the Registered Practitioner who has delegated that task regarding how the Service User did, how easy the exercises were and any pain or discomfort
