Who are Mort n Pesty? Mortar: a bowl made of strong material, in which substances are pounded and ground to powder with a pestle. Pestle: a blunt-ended implement for reducing hard substances to powder by pounding them in a mortar. Mort n Pesty are not only Martin Avenue Pharmacy s spokespeople, but also characters derived from the classic tools of pharmacy, the mortar and pestle. Mort, the mortar, is older, wiser, and straight to the point; while Pesty, the pestle, is younger, rambunctious and over eager. While both characters know pharmacy, because they are tools of the trade, Mort knows more than he lets on, and Pesty lets on more than he knows. Mort Pesty Origin: Mortar Color: Bronze Eyes: Blue Height: 5 1/2 inches Diameter: 7 inches Weight: 2 1/2 lb. Origin: Pestle Color: Brass Eyes: Blue Height: 7 inches Weight: 1/2 lb. What is Compounding? Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing custom medications for patients or pets. Its practice dates back to the origins of pharmacy; yet, compounding s presence throughout the pharmacy profession has changed over the years. In the 1930 s and 1940 s approximately 60 percent of all medications were compounded. With the advent of drug manufacturing in the 1950s and 60s, compounding rapidly declined. The pharmacist's role as a preparer of medications quickly changed to that of a dispenser of manufactured dosage forms. Within the last two decades, though, compounding has experienced resurgence, as modern technology and innovative techniques and research have allowed more pharmacists to customize medications to meet specific patient needs. Today, an estimated one percent of all prescriptions are compounded daily by pharmacists working closely with physicians and their patients. Martin Avenue Pharmacy Martin Avenue Pharmacy has been at the forefront of the compounding resurgence for over thirty years. Our experience ensures that our customers benefit from the highest pharmaceutical expertise. To learn more about Martin Avenue Pharmacy s broad range of services, visit our website at And you may learn something about compounding in this coloring book but let the kids do the coloring!
If the kids want to keep on coloring, they can! Mort n Pesty s adventures continue in their very own section of our website. At you ll find many more pictures that can be printed out for coloring. PLUS you ll find many animated adventures to watch! And our website is full of answers to questions you may have about custom compounding, as well as timely Health News and The Critter Chronicle for news about medication for pets and exotic animals.
Mort n Pesty, report to the Compounding Area! You must see what we have made! 1
2 Hello! I am Mort!
And I am Pesty! 3
4 Remember, Pesty, we need to be quiet in the Compounding Laboratory. That is where the pharmacists make the medications!
I know that, Mort! LET S GO! 5
Electronic Mortar and Pestle Traditional Mortar and Pestle Both are used for grinding and mixing. What kind of medication do you think they are making, Mort? 6
Well, Pesty, you know that we make many kinds of medications. 7
8 For example, if an adult, child or even a pet does not like the taste of a medication, we can help! We have over 150 flavors to choose from!
Or if someone needs a medication that is no longer available, we can help by making it here at Martin Avenue. 9
flavored lozenges and troches Sometimes patients have a hard time swallowing a pill, or they do not like a medication s taste. We can change the dosage form of the medication! This helps the patient take their medication and helps them get better sooner. There are many dosage forms to choose from. We make flavored liquids, lozenges, gels... and the list goes on! 10
Capsule Making Machine And from time to time patients even request a liquid medication to be changed into a capsule. We can do that too! 11
The Laminar Flow Hood constantly filters the air to create a work area free of particles and microbes. On occasion the doctor will prescribe a sterile medication, such as an eye drop or injection. This is when the Laminar Flow Hood is used. 12
We even have the ability to make natural medications just by using what Mother Nature has given us. 13
Just a few of the devices used in a pharmacy s lab 1. Electronic Analytical Balance For extremely precise weighing. 2.Balance For weighing powders 3.Pellet Press For pressing medicines into pellet form. 4. Magnetic Stirrer & Hot Plate For liquids that need to be heated and stirred carefully. 5. Microwave Oven For things that need to be warmed up. You know Pesty, that sounded like Labner s voice calling us. So they must be making a medication for a PET! 14
Ointment Mill For making creams. 7. Stove Top For things that must be heated or brought to a boil. 8. Cylinders Used to measure liquids. 9. Wash Bottles Used for rinsing and cleaning. For a PET! Of course! Mort, you are so smart! 15
16 And look! There is Labner, the Labrador Lab Tech!
Mort n Pesty! I am so glad you are here! I want to show you Martin Avenue Pharmacy s latest compounding achievement! 17
18 Well, Labner, I am sure it is for a pet...but what is it?
It is a medicine we have made for a basset hound, cleverly disguised as a peanut butter-flavored treat! Chewable and tasty! She will love them! 19
Flavored Lozenges & Troches Creams & Lotions Flavored Fun Forms! Ointments & Gels Chapstick Tubes Eye & Ear Drops... and many more! visit 20 WOW! We really can custom compound just about any kind of medicine into any form or flavor! Not just medicine for people, but all kinds of pets, too!
That s right, Pesty, because at Martin Avenue Pharmacy we make it better! 21
