1 Photography by: CJ Reilly III and Eric Parke Ellie s Bee, Bird, & Butterfly Garden: Pollinating Flora, Producing Food Ellie s Bee, Bird, & Butterfly Garden provides a habitat for a wide range of pollinators, including those in its name, plus other beneficial insects that are critical to the biodiversity of our ecosystem not to mention critical to our agriculture-based food production. Approximately 90% of all wide flowering plants depend on animal and insect pollination to some extent. Did you know? Between billion dollars worth of annual global food production relies on direct contributions by pollinators. The naturalized, native plants selected for the Bee, Bird, and Butterfly Garden are high in pollen, nectar, and seed count. These plantings range from species requiring full sun, such as rose milkweed (asclepias incarnata), summersweet (clethra alnifolia), and coneflowers (echinacea purpurea) to requiring part-shade, such as garden phlox (phlox paniculata), blue mistflower (eupatorium coelestinum), and Joe Pye weed (eutrochium purpureum). These plants all provide a rich and diverse food source for the many birds, insects, and microbes that are present in our local ecosystems. Healthy plantings create a well-balanced ecology and may serve as examples of what we can do in our own homes or yard gardens. After all, who doesn t want more butterflies fluttering around the backyard? To explore further, please visit Ellie s Bee, Bird, & Butterfly Garden was made possible with donations from the Derby family.
