I have 2 sisters and 1 brother and we are all close in age, so things were always exciting and crazy growing up. We had lots of pets growing up at one time or another, including rabbit, miniature goats, cats, dogs, and horses. I played sports through high school (softball and basketball) and met my husband my senior year in high school. I currently have 3 nieces who I adore and spend as much time as possible spoiling them. What are your hobbies? I enjoy reading, scrapbooking, photography, gardening, and being outside in general. How did you become interested in Physical Therapy? I was pre med during my undergraduate years at Loyola University in Chicago until my senior year. I was homesick and decided to spend the summer home before going back to school. I went to the local hospital in order to get all of my volunteer hours in and they have a program with the local high school to get them as volunteers. Since there was not any openings, the volunteer coordinator sent me to their outpatient physical therapy clinic. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the type of relationship that each patient had with his/her therapist. I also enjoyed that each therapist had time for his/her family without it conflicting with work or vice versa. I decided right then that I was better fit as a physical therapist than as a physician and went back to school that fall and started applying at Physical Therapy schools. Since then I have not had any regrets about my career choice, even though I am probably one of the few therapists that you will meet that had no idea what a physical therapist was or did until my senior year in college. Who are your heroes/role models? My parents have been great role models for me. They were always supportive of my choices even though that involved going away to school. They made me believe and supported that I could do anything I wanted as long as I was willing to work hard for it. I also had a great public speaker professor during my first year of college. She was very supportive and made a point to speak to me about home and my goals during college. She helped me give me the confidence to try new things and go after my future. 2 Do you have a favorite quote/motto? May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields and, Until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand I really enjoy this blessing. I feel that no matter what life brings me, this reminds me that I have the love and support from my family and friends. I also believe that just when you want to lose faith, if you can just stick it out there is something better waiting for you. What is something about you that most people don t know or are surprised to find out about you? Ummm, this one is really hard for me. The biggest surprise that most people have about me is my age. I look significantly younger than most people think and have even been mistaken for a high school student on one of my clinicals.. by the way I am 26 years old. I always get told that I will appreciate that when I get older, so I guess I will just wait and see. Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? Ten years from now, I see myself with kids going to work and spending time at football and basketball games watching my husband coach. I hope to be an active part of the physical therapy profession through the APTA and establishing myself as a pediatric rehab physical therapist. Adrienne Klein, a student at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, and Chair of the Missouri Student Special Interest Group (MSSIG) poses with her husband. 6 Physical Activity Grants Available from MPTA Inspiring healthy behavior is central to our physical therapy mission and staying true to our public service commitment, the MPTA Board approved funding for Physical Activity Grants for Missouri schools. The program is modeled after the Physical Activity Grants of the Arizona Chapter of the APTA. With the blessing of the Arizona Chapter, we have modified their process and hope to donate the first grant funds to Missouri schools by May We will be able to offer up to $1000 for three schools to support physical activities for youth through the school physical education programs. Public or private middle school and junior high schools (grades 6-8) are invited to submit a proposal for the funds. The proposals must outline how the funds will be used to support physical activity in the students. It must include provisions for inclusion of children with disabilities, and it cannot be used to fund salaries. The goal is to stimulate a project that will be on-going and benefit students for years to come. Arizona grants have been used to purchase equipment such as pedometers, heart rate monitors, exercise mats, treadmills, exercise videos, etc. There is evidence that physical activity habits developed in children and adolescents will be carried into adulthood. 1,2,3 This effort to instill value in physical activity serves our mission to keep every body MOVING FORWARD! The MPTA needs your help to spread the word about these grants. You are encouraged to visit the website to review the information and access materials. A brochure has been developed that you can print and share with schools. The application form and instructions for potential applicants are available from this site as well. Applications will be due by April 1, 2010 and decisions regarding the grants will be made by May Schools are asked to participate in a public relations presentation of the check and to report back to the MPTA about the program implementation. Schools are also invited to present an oral report to the local districts if desired. Please share this information with schools in your area and encourage them to apply for the MPTA Physical Activity Grants. This is a win-win situation for the schools, the MPTA, and the health of your community! 8 Re: One Vote at the Component Level of APTA Date: February 22, 2010 INFO ON PTA CAUCUS EFFORT At the 2010 APTA House of Delegates (HOD), the PTA Caucus will put forth a motion to amend APTA s bylaws pertaining to voting privileges at the component level. Specifically, the motion will promote the provision of one vote for PTA members at the chapter/section level. Currently, APTA bylaws limit the PTA member to ½ vote for the election of leaders and input on issues affecting the chapter/section. Passing this RC will: Provide PTA members with one vote as they seek to responsibly elect their component leaders and address issues affecting the chapter/section; Provide the PTA anonymity in the voting process; Simplify the voting process by having one vote for all members; and Continue the process of integration and help restore the positive regard of many PTAs toward the Association. Passing this RC will not: Change the clinical relationship between the physical therapist and PTA; or Change the current voting process at the national level. When considering this proposed change in bylaws, it may be useful to consider the following: The history: PTAs were initially granted temporary APTA membership in 1973, which did not include voting rights. In 1975, the HOD established a PTA ( affiliate ) membership category and after considerable debate, ½ vote at the component level was the agreed upon compromise. No other known health professional organization discriminates their member groups through inequitable voting rights. PTAs serving in positions of leadership within APTA (eg, component board of directors, APTA appointed advisory panels, committees, and task forces, PT-PAC, PT Foundation) and with external groups, including state licensing boards and the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) exercise one vote responsibly and for the good of the profession and the public. There is no evidence that membership dues or level of education for any of APTA s membership designations have been linked to voting privileges. Dues for each membership designation appear to be determined according to earning potential. PTAs are equal stakeholders in the success of the profession for their economic future. The PTA Caucus has consistently supported APTA s mission, goals, and vision as evidenced by the Caucus s mission statement: The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Caucus, serving with integrity and responsiveness, will be the voice of the physical therapist assistant in meeting the vision, goals and objectives of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and the profession. In conclusion, the PT and PTA work together to promote the recovery, health, and wellness of our patients/ clients and the public. We are One in Mission, One in Vision, One Member, and One Vote. It is time for physical therapists and PTAs to take the next step within the Association; to live our brand and Move Forward. Respectfully, thank you.
