3 President s Monthly Report - May Hello Fellow Lions Wow! how fast can a year go, I felt it was only last week that we were organizing my own changeover and now we are about to have the next one. Anzac Day 2014, turned out to be a big day for Belinda and I, as we attended the Gunfire Breakfast (Coffee with Rum) at 4am at the Kallangur North Services Club, followed by the Dawn Service at the Memorial Gardens and then an Anzac Breakfast, in the Poppy Room. A dash out to Samford to attend the Morning Service and laying of the Lions Wreath at Memorial Park. The Lions were invited to attend the Bendigo Bank Sponsorship and Grants Information Night at the Stags Football Club on Monday 28th April, where we were given an extensive overview. The Lions and the CCC will be putting in for respective Sponsorship and Grant. On Saturday 3rd May we attended the Leo s High Tea where they sponsored Shayna for the Lions Personality Quest. This was a great afternoon with the Leo s participating in a Fashion Parade and lots of Raffle Prizes up for grabs. The silent auction, a great concept, saw competitive bidding raising lots of funds and laughter. Support from Sponsors for this event was amazing and $2349 was raised on the day. The Medical Research Personality Quest Preliminary Final will be held on the 24th May at Brookwater Golf Club. We wish Shayna all the best and may she get a great deal of enjoyment out of the next phase of her year. Shayna has certainly brought a great deal of enjoyment to our year. Yours in Lionism President Brian

The reason I joined Samford Leo s: To contribute to the local community and meet new young people in the area. The projects I want Samford Leo Club to be involved in: I am interested in any projects which help promote and enhance Samford s community spirit or protect the environment. I like being a Leo because: I have more opportunities to learn about teamwork, leadership and generally contribute to the community. How I found out about Samford Leo s: I noticed the Leo s at one of their sausage sizzles outside the Samford IGA and then found out more from their Village Pump article. When I leave school I want to be: I want to work in a career which enables me to help people and promote justice and equality. LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITY

6 ANZAC DAY at Samford President Brian Sait lays a Wreath at the Memorial on behalf of the Lions Club of Samford What do you say if asked about Lions work? Are you stuck for a coherent answer? From the Lions International Website, here are some suggestions. More Volunteers Doing More Community Work in More Places than Any Service Club Organization When it comes to meeting challenges, our response is simple: We serve. In over 200 countries, in hospitals and senior centres, in regions battered by natural disaster, in schools and eyeglass recycling centers, Lions are doing community volunteer work, helping, leading, planning and supporting. Because we're local, we can serve the unique needs of the communities we live in. And because we're global, we can address challenges that go beyond borders. We want everyone to see a better tomorrow. That's why we support sight programs and services including vision screenings, eye banks and eyeglass recycling. Provide eye care services to those at risk of losing their sight. And raise donations through campaigns like SightFirst and Campaign SightFirst II. We believe everyone deserves a healthy life. From providing health programs that focus on hearing loss to supporting efforts to control and prevent diabetes, Lions volunteers are working to improve the health of children and adults around the world. We empower the next generation. Whether it's providing youth volunteer opportunities and leadership experiences in a Leo club or sharing a message of peace through our Peace Poster contest, our youth programs invest in the future by reaching out to young people. We serve local communities and protect the planet. From performing hands-on community work and service projects to providing emergency assistance, our community and environment programs improve our communities and protect the environment. There are many ways to get involved. Here are just a few of the many opportunities to do volunteer community work when you join the Lions: Community projects Group volunteer opportunities Become a host family Community disaster preparedness Diabetes awareness Global health programs
7 From the Global Membership Team Last month we penned some more Membership Matters, in particular, What s In It For Me?, that DG Rob expanded on. As foreshadowed last month, we now ask you to read another very recent article of members info What Do I Owe Lions? and thank the unknown author: To answer that, I ve got to go back to why I joined Lions For the people I d meet and the friends I d make. To help people, not as lucky in life as me, in ways I could not do alone, and the satisfaction I d get from that. For the status of being a Lion. On all three counts, that s happened for me in spades. But it s only happened because to give myself a bit of credit I ve tried to put others first and me second (sounds like one of our Ethics, doesn t it?). Firstly, I ve made the friends I have in Lions by realizing that I ve got a whole bunch of weaknesses to go with my strengths. So, if I m going to get along with others and make new friends, then I had best put up with their failings and love them for their strengths, because that s the way I hope they ll look at me. And it s worked. Secondly, the satisfaction I get out of helping others through Lions is enormous I simply could not do it as an individual. And there s the rub, as Hamlet said. By joining Lions, I knew that I was giving up my power to do exactly what I wanted to do. I now had to do what the majority of Lions wanted to do. I could, and can have influence, but I can t determine and decide that s for the collective, and that s the price I pay for achieving things as a group that I could not even dream of getting done as an individual. Thirdly, the status of being a Lion is real. Being part of the world s largest service organization opens doors in business and socially. And that includes the respect of my peers. But human nature being what it is, the above is not always the case. One selfish or hurtful deed within Lions or in public will certainly be remembered and my good deeds likely forgotten. So What Do I Owe Lions? I owe Lions- By remembering that I m in this Lions organization and my Club because I want to be no one is giving me a pay cheque that forces me to come to a job I don t want to be at. This is voluntary, and I ve volunteered. Since I m here, why waste my time I might as well enjoy myself. I ll do that more easily if I make those around me do the same with smiles, laughter, jokes and irreverence I can make no better contribution to my Club. If I specifically learn a joke to tell at each meeting I will tell it and probably be roundly booed, and the Club will be better for it and expect a joke from me next meeting. And they will get it. They will all say they don t want to hear but, with a little connivance with my President I ll tell it anyway and get booed, again. I see very little in Lions that requires me to be that serious; and I can concentrate, work and make decisions while still being light-hearted about it If someone is being obnoxious and thinking only of him/herself and not considering others, the best way to diffuse the situation, without an open conflict and them losing face, is through laughter, and deflecting the attention. If a member is confrontational, then I attempt to view the situation through their eyes and reassess the situation. This puts a different perspective on things. If, after all that, there is still a person putting poison into the Club, then I owe it to my Club not to duck the problem, but to take him/her aside and chat with them privately about their attitude/ problems/style/whatever and/or have a member respected by all concerned mediate. And, if all else fails, the DG will then appoint, as provided for in Article X of the Standard Club Constitution, a Conciliator who will resolve the matter which is then final and binding on all parties. Til next month take care, and remember - If it is to be, it s up to me. Have you invited a prospective member to your Club yet? Time is running out please don t leave it too late. Lindsay Marsden Global Membership Team Co-ordinator

Getting involved is easy! Educate your community about the Recycle for Sight program by showing the 10-minute film, "New Glasses, New Life." Establish new collection locations at schools, places of worship, businesses, etc. Check your existing locations to make sure your collection containers are fresh, attractive and emptied on a regular basis. Visit the Recycle For Sight page for more information or to order supplies to begin or enhance your collection campaign. And don't forget to promote the need for usable reading glasses and sunglasses, as well.

15 LIONS PURPOSES CODE OF ETHICS TO CREATE and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world. TO PROMOTE the principles of good government and good citizenship. TO TAKE an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community. TO UNITE the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding. TO PROVIDE a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members. TO ENCOURAGE service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavours. Lions Clubs International VISION STATEMENT TO BE THE GLOBAL LEADER in community and humanitarian service. Lions Clubs International MISSION STATEMENT TO EMPOWER VOLUNTEERS to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs. TO SHOW my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service. TO SEEK success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part. TO REMEMBER that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another s; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself. WHENEVER a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself. TO HOLD friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given. ALWAYS to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state and my community, and to give to them my unswerving loyalty in word, act and deed. To give them freely of my time, labour and means. TO AID others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy. TO BE CAREFUL with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.
