2 CONTENTS 1. PREAMBLE 2. EVENT OVERVIEW 3. PREPARATORY LISTENING OVERVIEW 4. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS 5. DIALOGUE SESSION OVERVIEW 6. SUMMARY OF RESPONSES APPENDICES APPENDIX A FULL FINDINGS Preamble: Cardiff Youth Council (CYC) is the official network for young people aged in Cardiff. CYC s primary objective is to advocate for positive change for young people and make Cardiff a better place to live, work and play. The membership of CYC is made up of representatives from 10 school councils, 11 community organisations and forums. There are also representatives from the two FE institutions and students from the three universities. There are also many individuals who become members who are passionate about contributing to their community and representing the views of young people. It has four elected officers Chair, Vice Chair and two British Youth Council Representatives. The youth council is funded and directly supported by officers from Cardiff Council s Education Department. In total there are over 120 active members and 54 took part in the dialogue session discussed in this paper. Cardiff Youth Council Brief 2 Board Meeting 27 January 2015

3 Figure 1 Maria Battle addresses CYC Event Overview: CYC was approached by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board to take part in a listening exercise with the organisation s Chairperson Maria Battle. The aim of the event was to share the challenges faced by the Health Board and to enable CYC members to feed in their views and possible solutions. The event was hosted in the Cardiff Old Library in the city centre and formed part of the youth council s monthly meeting. Preparatory Activity: Overview It was felt by CYC that to enable members to feel informed around the views of young people around the issues of health they would coordinate a listening exercise before the event. Four key questions were provided by the Health Board in advance of the event and these were then transposed into a questionnaire format and members took them into their communities for young people to complete. 1. What would help you live a healthier lifestyle? 2. What technology do you currently use that could help the Health Service improve how we deliver services to you? 3. What are the benefits of these technologies to you? 4. Is there anything you think the NHS should not be doing, or is wasting its money on? Cardiff Youth Council Brief 3 Board Meeting 27 January 2015

The group discussion was informed by the findings from the broader listening exercise but set against 4 questions: 1. What stops you being the healthiest you can be? 2. What would help you be healthier? 3. What is most important to you when using health services? 4. What do you think the NHS should do to help them meet their challenges? No cost ideas, low cost ideas and off the wall ideas The cohort of 54 CYC representatives broke into 7 groups of 6-8 people and they discussed each question in turn capturing their answers on flip chart. Figure 2 Group Dialogue Below is a summary of the key responses. Cardiff Youth Council Brief 5 Board Meeting 27 January 2015

6 1. What stops you being the healthiest you can be? Young people in half the groups reported that the facilities ranked as one of the top reasons for not being the healthiest you can be, listing the low number of facilities, the cost and the reduction in services. Joint top alongside facilities was lifestyle and peer pressure with drinking and smoking listed as particular issues. Young people then equally reported a range of points including self esteem, past injuries, disability and the cost of healthy food. 2. What would help you be healthier? The top two responses from young people on this issue was clearly increased number of facilities which were of good quality with 6 of the 7 groups reported this as top answer and alongside this was better education and knowledge of consequences coming a close second. 3 groups each listed the cost of healthy food as a clear point with an additional 2 groups listing promotion and campaigns as a helpful development. 3. What is most important to you when using health services? Young people ranked waiting times and efficiency as their top two points with 4 of the 7 groups reporting them as points. This was followed closely by friendly, approachable staff that cared with 3 groups reporting this as important. Other points came across as important including good communication and skilled and informed workforce as key to young people. 4.
