1 NHS Warwickshire North Clinical Commissioning Group Enc G Report To: Governing Body Report Title: Communications and Engagement Report - July and August 2015 Report From: Jenni Northcote, Director of Partnership and Engagement Date: 24 th September 2015 Previously considered by: Not applicable Purpose of the report: This report provides an overview of communications and engagement activity undertaken during July and August Key Points: The report provides an update on the following areas: Engagement activity undertaken in July and August of 2015 with an array of different audiences from the Nuneaton, Bedworth and North Warwickshire population. Patient Group Forum meeting. #onething campaign - to date over 540 pledges have been made and these are being followed up by regular s to those that have made their pledge as a form of gentle encouragement. Food bank health checks - 27 users of the Nuneaton Food Bank undertook health checks as part of the ongoing health aware communities project. Free Radio interview with CCG Chair, Dr Deryth Stevens. Public engagement on urgent care was carried out in July and August. At the close of the engagement over 214 respondents had completed the survey and engagement had taken place in a range of locations. Recommendation: The Governing Body is requested to NOTE the report. 2 Governing Body report Communications and Engagement report July/August Patient and Public involvement Patient Group Forum The Patient Group Forum (PGF) had their bimonthly meeting in July at the George Eliot Hospital. The main focus of the meeting a presentation from the Chair of the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Dr Deryth Stevens. Dr Stevens presented to the group on the progress made against the CCG s Vision for Quality, advising that with the feedback received the CCG has listened to local voices. Dr Stevens then went on to present some of the outcomes and achievements in Cardiovascular Disease that the CCG has made in year 2014/15. Also included on the agenda was a community services update. Andrea Green explained that following the work that has been done to inform the CCG s commissioning intentions the CCG believes that they have built a picture of what they want from community services in the future and will be making a decision about how they might secure those services towards the end of July and beginning of August. Andrea went on to say that the CCG will be asking the group to get involved. The meeting was also used to provide an update on the work the CCG has recently undertaken in relation to urgent care and the Walk-in service at Camp Hill. Issues raised are addressed by the CCG via the group s issue log and fed back to the service concerned. Engagement over urgent care WNCCG undertook further public engagement in July and August on its plans around urgent care. This work followed a number of meetings that the CCG had held with representatives from the Camp Hill Patient Participation Group after NHS England s award of the contract for the primary care service at Camp Hill to Malling Health. During the two month period the engagement with the public was in the form of a survey, to better understand how they use local urgent care services. Surveys were supplied to members of the PGF, stakeholders, practices and Healthwatch Warwickshire. The CCG was keen to have conversations with the public and learn how it can offer urgent care that better meets local needs while at the same time ensuring high quality for all. Locations where this work was carried out included: Manor Court surgery, Manor Court Church Food bank, Nuneaton Mosque, Atherstone Hub, CHESS Centre Luncheon club, leisure centres, Bulkington Library and Hartshill Over 50s club. Also press releases were featured in the Nuneaton News, the Coventry Telegraph, Tamworth Herald and Atherstone and Coleshill Herald. At the close of the engagement over 214 respondents had completed the survey. There also followed more targeted engagement with parents of children under 5 and this resulted in 37 more surveys received. The feedback from this will be used to shape the next steps in this important work.
3 Patient Transport Services engagement The (CCG s) across Coventry and Warwickshire carried out engagement on the Patient Transport Service. It was agreed that a test of the eligibility criteria should be done with specific patient and public groups. The support groups that they wanted to engage with were: renal, mental health, learning difficulties and BME from the WNCCG area. The engagement session took place at Lewes House on 22 July and the output will be used to confirm the criteria. Cardiovascular campaign In partnership with Warwickshire County Council, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and North Warwickshire Borough Council, the cardiovascular (CVD) lifestyle campaign has undertaken further public engagement. The overall aims of the #onething campaign are to reduce levels of CVD in women, reduce CVD deaths, reduce smoking in pregnancy, increase numbers accessing smoking cessation and increase physical activity. During July and August there were a number of events that the team attended to raise awareness of the campaign including the health checks sessions at the mosque. To date over 540 pledges have been made and these are being followed up by regular s to those that have made their pledge as a form of gentle encouragement. Health Aware Communities After a suggestion at the health aware communities group meeting that further health checks be undertaken, this led to a meeting with Trussell Trust. The Trust runs the food banks in Nuneaton and agreed that health checks sessions could be undertaken in July at two locations: Manor Court Baptist Church, Manor Court Road on 9, 16, 23 and 30 July 2015 between 10.30am and 12.00pm. And Holy Trinity Church, Attleborough on 10, 17, 24 and 31 July 2015 between 1.30pm and 3.00pm. A press release was issued and Dr Deryth Stevens was asked to appear on Free Radio to explain the rationale behind the activity. The release was also included in the Nuneaton News. The results from the sessions saw 27 people having health checks and identified four people with high blood pressure, four with a high risk of diabetes and seven referred to their GP. The exercise was clearly worthwhile with a high proportion of those having a check being given medical advice or referred to other services. Free Radio is keen to do a follow up piece with Dr Deryth Stevens on the success of the activity. Community leaders meeting The first of the mosque events pre-ramadan saw 35 diabetes checks and 41 mini-health checks carried out where16 people were referred to their local GP with a new diagnosis of high blood pressure or high blood sugar. There then followed more health checks after Eid in July and August which saw 43 diabetes checks and 53 mini-health checks carried out. These checks saw 10 people being referred to their GP with a new diagnosis of high blood pressure or high blood sugar. These results are very promising as they affirm that the work being done is vital. These early interventions can avoid serious treatment or even deaths in some cases. The next community leaders meeting is planned to take place in September. An update on this meeting will be included within the next report.
4 Health Champions The Health Champions continue to not only receive regular newsletters from the CCG and are invited to take part in any relevant surveys or events depending on their area of particular interest. A new Health Champions newsletter has been created and has been distributed in July. Previous Health Champions newsletters are available to download from the CCG website: Champion 2. Media Media activity focused on the promotion of the health checks update campaign plus general public health messages. Releases to the media covered topics including: Health checks carried out at local foodbanks Patient s to have say on urgent care services review Patient encouraged to order repeat prescriptions in time for Bank Holiday Save the date for our annual general meeting. 3. Membership communications The monthly prescribing newsletter was sent out to all our GP members, covering: Prescribing Quality and Safety Audits ( ) Quick win indapamide End of financial year prescribing data ( ); o Discouraged List o Pharmaceutical specials o Specialist Only o Potential generic savings 4. E-communications Website The graph below looks at the daily views to the NHS North Warwickshire CCG website in July/August 2015.
5 Weekdays are the most popular days for people accessing the website and the site receives between about views per day with a total of 33,262, an increase of 4,641 from the previous report. In July there were a total of 16,871 page views on the website and 16,391 in August. Both months saw high numbers of visitors. With one of the most popular pages being Walk in and Urgent Care Centres and with the high demand on these local services this could explain this trend. The Walk-in and Urgent Care Centres page of the site continues to be among the more popular of the website and these pages were publicised during the Urgent Care engagement. Four of the six most popular pages continue to be Governing Body Members and CCG staff, Patient Group Forum and Our Governing Body Meetings which demonstrates that the public are using the site to primarily access corporate information on the CCG. Development of the website Updates to the website have included amendments made to the Governing Body papers, uploading of the Governing Body papers, creation of a new page to highlight events, a new Urgent Care section to house the engagement details and survey and Nursing and Midwifery code of conduct page developed. Also a dementia navigators section was added to the discussion forum of the Patient Group Area was added to the website. Twitter Social media - in particular Twitter continues to be used to promote the activity of the CCG. The #onething campaign is ongoing and primarily promoted via social media where those pledging are encouraged to spread their message on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Recent tweets have been focussed on #onething, remaining healthy during Ramadan, health checks at the Nuneaton mosque, signposting during the Bank Holiday and encouraging the public to attend the WNCCG AGM. During July/August there were 115 new followers to the CCG Twitter account. In total there are now 1,496 followers. The tweets sent from the account had a potential total reach of 55,000 during July and August, a decrease of 44,000 and contributed to 44 extra clicks through to the website. The graph above shows the number of positive and negative CCG mentions by other users on Twitter in July and August.
