The Road to Recovery THE 8 PRINCIPLES BASED ON THE BEATITUDES Principle 1: Realize I m not God; I admit that I am powerless to control my tendency to do the wrong thing and that my life is unmanageable. (Step 1) Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor. Matthew 5:3a TEV Principle 2: Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him, and that He has the power to help me recover. (Step 2) Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4 TEV, NIV Principle 3: Consciously choose to commit all my life and will to Christ s care and control. (Step 3) Happy are the meek. Matthew 5:5a TEV Principle 4: Openly examine and confess my faults to myself, to God, and to someone I trust. (Steps 4 and 5) Happy are the pure in heart. Matthew 5:8a TEV Principle 5: Voluntarily submit to every change God wants to make in my life and humbly ask Him to remove my character defects. (Steps 6 and 7) Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires. Matthew 5:6a TEV 9
Principle 6: Evaluate all my relationships. Offer forgiveness to those who have hurt me and make amends for harm I ve done to others, except when to do so would harm them or others. (Steps 8 and 9) Happy are those who are merciful to others. Matthew 5:7a TEV Happy are those who work for peace. Matthew 5:9 TEV Principle 7: Reserve a daily time with God for self-examination, Bible reading, and prayer in order to know God and His will for my life, and to gain the power to follow His will. (Steps 10 and 11) Principle 8: Yield myself to God to be used to bring this Good News to others, both by my example and by my words. (Step 12) Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires! Matthew 5:10 TEV 10
The 12 Steps and Their Biblical Comparisons Step 1: We admitted we were powerless over our addictions and compulsive behavior; that our lives had become unmanageable. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. Romans 7:18 NIV Step 2: We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. For it is God who is at work in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Philippians 2:13 NIV Step 3: We made a decision to turn our life and our will over to the care of God. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship. Step 4: We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Romans 12:1 NIV Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD. Lamentations 3:40 NIV Step 5: We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being, the exact nature of our wrongs. Therefore, confess your sins to each other, and pray for each other, so that you may be healed. James 5:16a NIV Step 6: We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James 4:10 NIV 11
Step 7: We humbly asked Him to remove all our shortcomings. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 NIV Step 8: We made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all. Do to others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6:31 NIV Step 9: We made direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; and then come and offer your gift. Matthew 5:23 24 NIV Step 10: We continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don t fall! 1 Corinthians 10:12 NIV Step 11: We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Colossians 3:16a NIV Step 12: Having had a spiritual experience as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and practice these principles in all our affairs. Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. Galatians 6:1 NIV 12

Celebrate Recovery Advanced Leadership Training Introduction and Overview Welcome to Celebrate Recovery s Advanced Leadership Training! I m sure you can t wait to start using this new resource. Before you get started, however, there are some things I d like to share with you. The Celebrate Recovery model is built on 7 Keys. If you aren t sure what the 7 Keys are, refer to page 70. Of the 7 Keys, Leadership Training is one of the most important! God s Word tells us in Proverbs 23:12 NIV to, Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge. All intelligent leaders are well-trained leaders. Ephesians 4:11 12 NIV tells us, It was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up. That verse makes it pretty clear that it is our responsibility, as recovery Ministry Leaders, to train and encourage our recovery Small Group Leaders. You might be asking, How do I know that my Celebrate Recovery ministry is ready for this tool? What makes this tool advanced? Congratulations! Those are excellent questions. This guide is advanced because the information contained in it will allow you to take your established Celebrate Recovery ministry to the next level of leadership training and growth. If you have not started a Celebrate Recovery ministry yet, it is important to begin with the Leader s Guide found in the Celebrate Recovery Curriculum Kit. on pages in the Celebrate Recovery Leader s Guide, you will find the Basics or How-tos of starting your ministry. You will also find the proven 90-Day Kick-off Strategy to help you get started. If you already have established your ministry, you now are ready to use this Advanced Leadership Training Guide. You can begin to use specific trainings as early as month three of the 90-Day Kick-off Strategy. This Training Guide includes: 6 chapters worth of training materials and resources to help you take your Celebrate Recovery ministry to the next level. A USB flash drive containing the trainers teaching notes, participant handouts, information sheets, bulletin inserts for all 25 of the Celebrate Recovery lessons, and audio files for the Serenity Prayer and Recovery Check-Up lessons. Both of these audio files can be used in place of a live trainer. 15
The training materials are excellent tools for you to use during your monthly leaders meetings. Simply choose a chapter to go over each month. You may also want to teach certain chapters, such as New Leader Orientation, on a monthly basis at a different time, so you can recruit and introduce more participants into leadership. Let s take a brief look at each chapter. Chapter 1 Forming Your T.E.A.M. Designed for the Ministry Leader and Trainer, this chapter contains information on how to build your T.E.A.M. This chapter will assist the Ministry Leader in identifying individuals shaped to assist in leading the Celebrate Recovery ministry. The Ministry Leader should look for the personality traits, gifts, experiences, knowledge, skills, and passion that best fit each role of the T.E.A. Training, Encourager, and Assimilation Coaches. This module defines the T.E.A. roles, which will help the coaches understand their tasks and learn how to work together to better serve their Celebrate Recovery ministry. The Ministry Leader also will be able to distinguish and evaluate the roles of the T.E.A. Chapter 2 Facilitating Your General Meeting Night Designed for the Ministry Leader and Trainer, this chapter contains information about the format for the Large Group Meeting. By reading through this material, the Ministry Leader can evaluate their Large Group Meeting and determine if any adjustments are needed. This chapter contains a detailed description of the Large Group Format, with step-by-step explanations of every element of the evening. Chapter 3 New Leader Orientation This chapter is designed for the Trainer as an orientation and initial training for new leaders. It contains the vision, expectations and requirements of leadership. New leaders need to have a good understanding of the Celebrate Recovery model and know what is expected of them. All the paperwork needed to get a new Leader plugged into service is here for the Trainer s use. It may be modified to reflect the personality of your church and the Celebrate Recovery ministry. 16
Chapter 4 Ongoing Leader Training Designed for the Ministry Leader and Trainer, this workshop will train and equip leaders in several key areas including Open Share and Newcomers Groups, Small Group Guidelines, Writing Your Testimony, Step Studies, Sponsor Training, Mental Health Initiative, and more. OPEN SHARE AND NEWCOMERS GROUPS Explains the How-tos of the Open Share Group Format. This will help ensure that your Celebrate Recovery stays true to the model. This training stresses the importance of maintaining a safe environment for all who attend your Celebrate Recovery. SMALL GROUP GUIDELINES Focuses on the five Small Group Guidelines that are implemented at every Small Group Meeting. The importance of using these Guidelines cannot be overstated. It is crucial that we provide an environment of safety for all of those who participate in our groups. By using these Guidelines, we can ensure this is accomplished. Included is a script for training your leaders on using the Guidelines, complete with detailed explanations of each Guideline, and suggested helpful phrases to be used to gently, but effectively, enforce the Guidelines. These helpful phrases also provide you with some of the more common ways that these Guidelines are broken and ways to respond to the situations. HOW TO WRITE YOUR TESTIMONY Designed for the Trainer or Ministry Leader to use at a Leaders meeting when their Celebrate Recovery is new, and as a separate training at least twice a year for established Celebrate Recovery ministries. The Trainer s notes lay out the workshop in easy-to-understand language, giving many prompts and ideas to assist participants in putting their life experiences down on paper. From this workshop you will find the testimonies for your Large Group Meetings. So be encouraging, supportive, and insistent that every leader write their testimony and be ready to share what God has done in their recovery. SPONSOR TRAINING Contains information on Accountability Teams and Sponsors. It will provide you with alternatives if you have a limited number of Sponsors available. Also, it will give you the tools to train new Sponsor candidates as they come through your Step Studies. In addition, this training will help your leaders differentiate between a Sponsor and an Accountability Partner. Also included is an Intervention outline. This tool will help guide you in facilitating an intervention. 17
MENTAL HEALTH Focuses on what Celebrate Recovery can do around the Mental Health Initiative. Contains roles and responsibilities for a Mental Health Champion. Chapter 5 Additional Leader Training Designed for the Ministry Leader and Trainer, this chapter contains information on, and the format for, monthly leadership meetings. The Ministry Leader will learn the importance of making these monthly meetings a priority. You will also be given ways to share leadership responsibilities while giving others the opportunity to grow into leadership. Included are Special Lessons for the Ministry Leader or Trainer to use on one of the suggested testimony nights throughout the year, or for additional training for your leadership. Chapter 6 Additional Resources This chapter contains information on crucial ministries of Celebrate Recovery, including Celebration Place, The Landing, Celebrate Recovery Inside, and Celebrate Recovery International. 18
