1 Chesapeake Station News JUNE 2013 CSHOA Board of Directors President, Rusty Kuhns, Vice President, Keith Pardieck, Member at-large,charlie Pritchard, Secretary, Diane Halvorsen, Treasurer, Roland Schlehuber, Committee Chairmen: Grounds: Pam Johnson, Architectural: Penny Schmidt, Social: Heidi Daniels, From the President: Welcome to summer Fireworks! Tree-trimming! And soon.new signs! Pam Johnson, our Grounds Committee Chairman, has worked diligently along with several board members to develop a plan to replace most of the signs within our community. The Board has approved the plan and you should soon see a brighter, fresher and up-to-date look in the Chesapeake Station signage. Thank you always for your participation and involvement in our community. Have a happy and safe Independence Day celebration. Sincerely, Rusty 3 rd of July The Chesapeake Beach Independence day celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, July 3 rd, While we want everybody to enjoy the show with your visitors, we also have an obligation to limit the number of guest vehicles, so we can keep streets open for general safety and maintain a path for emergency vehicles. Once again Sheriff s Deputies will be at the intersection of C St and 17th St and also at C St and Mears Ave from 3pm until 8pm. Please respect them and follow their guidance. Parking Passes Beginning June 10, passes for guest vehicles are available from Keith Pardieck, , keith_pardieck@comcast.net, or Charlie Pritchard , cpritchard44@gmail.com, to any resident or owner in Chesapeake Station, with a limit of four per household. Starting June 29th, any remaining passes will be available to those needing more than four until the supply is exhausted. We have 260 passes, the maximum number of cars that can safely park in our community and still get emergency equipment through if necessary. Remember that each pass is for one car, not one individual. We don t want to spoil anyone s fun, and we re not trying to limit the size of your party. We re just trying to keep our streets safe, and all your neighbors will be grateful for your
2 help. Barricade Volunteers Once again we need your help to spend an hour of your afternoon on July 3rd helping our Sheriff's deputies staff the checkpoints at C Street and Mears, and C Street and 17th between 3 and 8p.m. It takes only an hour, gives you a chance to meet the deputies, and take a little break from your family and guests. It's easy, the Deputies will do all the hard work, our CSHOA helpers just need to smile and be the face of the community. As in the past we are asking residents to volunteer one hour of their time to stand with the deputies at the barricades to help check passes. Diane Halvorsen, , caseypug2001@yahoo.com is coordinating this effort. From Diane: We need 2 people per hour, one at each barricade, to work from 3-8pm. That s six hours X 2 = 12 people giving an hour s time each. The following slots are open: Mears: 4 through 7pm. 17th Street: 4 through 5pm and 7pm. Or to put it another way, 3 to 4 is covered at both streets and 6 to 7 is covered at 17th. So, if you can help, please or call me as soon as possible. I need to get this set up by the end of June as I will be out of state during the first week of July. (First time I have missed this great event in our community, but other responsibilities take precedent this time). Please let me know your preferred time and location, hopefully with a second and third choice, and I will do my best to accommodate preferences. Hugs, kisses and imaginary planes trailing "thank you" banners to any of you who are willing to let me assign you to any uncovered slot! Tips and Tricks You can help this system work, it has been planned for your safety, security and convenience. Please: Ø Don t ask for passes unless you intend to use them. If your plans change, give your passes to someone who needs them or return them to the Board. Ø Plan ahead. Get passes to your guests in plenty of time. Please have your guests carpool. This saves passes, parking spaces and gasoline. If your guests are arriving early, consider having them park in public areas and walk into Chesapeake Station. Another option is the Beach Trolley, have your guests park someplace where the Trolley stops. There are really many options other than bringing lots of cars into Chesapeake Station. Ø Understand that if your guests don t have a parking pass, their vehicle will not be admitted even if you vouch for them. (If you are unable to get the pass to them in advance, you can meet them at the entrance with it.) Ø Remember that you are responsible for the conduct and safety of your guests. That includes watching where they park and making sure that they have a designated driver, if needed. Ø Make sure your own cars have CSHOA parking stickers so you aren t stopped. If you need a sticker, contact Keith Pardieck at (But please don t give your sticker to a guest.)
3 And a final reminder: Chesapeake Beach and therefore Chesapeake Station, prohibit the unauthorized use of fireworks on either public or private property. We had several complaints in the past regarding fireworks and leftover debris on the beach, common grounds and sidewalks leading between individual properties. We have also received a stern warning from the town to remind our residents that they are in violation of the town's ordinance, and a safety hazard. As a result, we may ask the deputies to spend the last part of their shifts patrolling our community to help discourage individual use of fireworks. Thanks for your cooperation and help, and have a wonderful Independence Day celebration. SOCIAL COMMITTEE NEWS Anyone interested in helping Heidi coordinate the scheduling and planning of a summer luau is urged to contact her at heididaniels1@gmail.com, The luau is always a fun event, but it is a big job and she cannot do it alone. Please contact her with your ideas and offers to help. GROUNDS AND LANDSCAPE You will note that there are no more trashcans at the end of the sidewalk by the beach. This is not a mistake. After years of wrestling with over-flowing, misused, uncovered, fly and wasp-infested trash cans, the Board and grounds committee have agreed to try a period of no trash containers. So, as always, what you bring to the beach, you must take from the beach. Picnic supplies, food and drink containers, your kids' toys, your dog's waste and your own cigarette butts now need to go back to your own home trash containers. Please cooperate and urge others to do the same. Do you know we have a bluebird pair in residence? At last check there was a nest with four eggs in one of the boxes close to the Overlook. This is exciting news, particularly for our Vice-President, Keith Pardieck, who has been working to bring bluebirds to Chesapeake Station for the past couple of years. Please report any bluebird sightings to Keith (contact #s above). ANNUAL GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING The annual meeting will be September 14 at the Community Center, 10am to 1pm. Mark your calendars and plan to attend. More information will be mailed to you in mid-august. Anyone interested in serving on the Board should contact any board member to get their name placed on the ballot. In the meantime, why not attend a Board meeting? The meetings are open to all CSHOA members and we try to meet once each month in the evening. Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled for July 11 at 7pm at 7792 C Street. Call any Board member to verify the time and location and come join us. It is a great way to see how the Board operates and determine if you could volunteer your time.
4 FROM THE SECRETARY May I speak bluntly, here? Regarding the above, you may or may not know that the current CSHOA Board has remained unchanged since 2010/11. And the majority of individual members have been on the board even longer. While we can appreciate the hard work and dedication of the board members who serve year after year, it is a fact that new members bring new ideas, new ways of looking at things, and fresh enthusiasm for the tasks at hand. There is some conversation among some board members (yours truly being one) that it would be nice to take a break for a year or two, before one becomes so burned out that there is no possibility of being willing to return, having once "escaped". So, if it has crossed your mind that you might be interested in serving on the board, or returning if you have been a previous member, consider acting sooner rather than later. Run for the Board, attend meetings and take part in the discussion, all meetings are open to all HOA members. Minutes and financial reports are always available for your consideration. As always, pass these information mailings on to friends, neighbors and tenants who do not have . Anyone receiving multiple or duplicate s, please notify me as to which one(s) I can drop. And, of course, if you have moved and no longer wish to receive these notices, please let me know. Thanks, Diane. NEWS FROM MEMBERS Sven Thulin will be having his granddaughter s wedding on Saturday, August 31 at his home on 4007 Arcade Court. He is hoping for cooperative weather so that the service and photography can take place in his yard, and on the beach front from approximately 5:30 to 7:00pm. We will try the policy announced last September at the annual membership meeting, of announcing in advance when an event is going to take place so that other residents will know that persons on the beach and common areas are guests of a resident. Hosts of such events will be encouraged to let the Board advertise the date at least two weeks in advance, and to post their own signs the day of the event, asking us to be respectful and considerate of their celebration. Please note: Residents may not reserve the beach or other common ground for their exclusive use only. Keith Pardieck is wondering if any CS residents would be interested in forming a walking club? Got ideas? Experience? Know of existing clubs in the area? Keith with a brief summary of your interest. Especially let him know if you might be interested in helping with the organization! Elizabeth Henderson is reminding us of the wonderful Adult Swim Packages available from the Water Park. All detailed information available on the website: NEWS FROM TOWN Moonlight cruises from Chesapeake Beach continue throughout the summer aboard the Miss Chesapeake Beach with Captain Luke Thatcher. Tickets are $25 pp and available at Town Hall or online. For all the details call
