Measre yor servings of starchy foods (potatoes, rice, pasta, corn), and limit yor portions to one-half cp. Use a small food scale to weigh meat, poltry, and fish. 4 Healthy Life Jst Ahead TRICKS TO MAKE A NEW, HEALTHY HABIT STICK IN DAYS MAKING LASTING, HEALTHY CHANG- ES IN YOUR LIFE CAN BE A CHALLENGE. Here are a few ideas that may make it easier to form healthy habits in less time. Take a -day pledge: Vow to stay with yor change for days. By the time yo approach the month mark, the change may become atomatic. Commit to the habit daily: If yo want to exercise, do it daily dring the -day time commitment. Activities yo only do every few days may be more difficlt to make into habits. Be consistent: Dring the days, try to do the habit at the same time each day and in the same place. Ct off negative thoghts. Any time yo start to talk yorself ot of yor new habit, interrpt the thoght with bt. I don t have time to exercise, bt I will find time becase exercising is important to me. I m not in the right mood, bt I don t have to be in the right mood to exercise. VOW TO STAY WITH YOUR CHANGE FOR DAYS. Page 4 Member Isse 1 Volme

MOMMY MATTERS From the Trillim Perinatal Team BENEFITS OF EARLY CARE HAVING A BABY CAN BE AN EXCIT- ING TIME FULL OF NEW CHANGES! With a normal pregnancy lasting over 37 weeks, there are many decisions dring that time (and even before getting pregnant) that will help yo have a healthy baby. THESE INCLUDE: Taking Folic Acid daily Eating healthy food Exercising Ctting back on coffee, tea, and soda NO alcohol, smoking (incld ing pot), and street drgs Getting early care inclding dental Shold I worry abot getting early care? Does it matter if I don t see a doctor right away? The answer is YES! Many tests are done in the first 12 weeks that can affect the health of yor baby. Two of the main cases of early infant death are birth defects and low birth weight. We also often hear from members who feel that their practitioner is treating them differently becase their coverage is provided nder the Oregon Health Plan or Medicare. Another common concern reported by or members is that when they share with their practitioner that they are experiencing pain, that they are sometimes categorized as a drg seeker. 14 DID YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD COULD CATCH A CAVITY? Cindy Shirtcliff, LCSW Regional Manager/Commnity Liaison Advantage Dental THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY REPORTS THAT TOOTH DECAY IN CHILDREN IS 5 TIMES MORE COMMON THAN ASTHMA, 4 TIMES MORE COMMON THAN CHILDHOOD OBESITY, AND 20 TIMES MORE COMMON THAN DIABE- TES. Cavities are cased by an infection of bad bacteria called Strep Mtans. Children in the first 6 months of life can get these bacteria from the primary care giver or sibling who has had cavities. It is most often passed by kissing the child on the moth or by sharing items sch as spoons, forks or straws. CAVITIES ARE CAUSED BY AN INFECTION OF BAD BACTERIA Page 14 Member Isse 1 Volme Many parents believe the myth that baby teeth are not important becase the child will get a new set of permanent teeth. However, the facts are: Once the bacteria that case cavities are passed on to the child, the infection can spread from the baby teeth to the permanent teeth Healthy baby teeth are important for: 1) chewing foods, 2) learning to say letters and words and 3) holding the space for permanent teeth to come in. To help yor child stay cavity free follow these simple steps: Clean yor baby s gms after every feeding, even before they get their first tooth When yor baby gets his or her first tooth, begin brshing the front and back of their teeth with a smear of floride toothpaste twice a day Avoid sharing tensils or straws with yor child. Do not test a bottle or food with yor moth to see if it is too hot Do not pt yor baby to bed with a bottle CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

YOUR CHILD COULD CATCH A CAVITY (CONTINUED) For children two or older, se a pea size amont of floride toothpaste and brsh their teeth twice a day Don t give yor child sgary foods, like candy, cookies or soda Give yor child healthy snacks like string cheese, frits and vegetables By age 1, start taking yor child to the dentist for reglar check ps Yo can help yor child avoid cavities by following these simple steps. Help yor child have a healthy, cavity free smile! Member Isse 1 Volme Page 15

CONVERSATION STARTERS FOR TALKS ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH WHEN YOU CARE ABOUT SOMEONE WHO MAY HAVE A MENTAL-HEALTH ISSUE, IT CAN BE TRICKY TO KNOW HOW TO TALK ABOUT IT. TO START THE CONVERSATION, TRY ASKING THESE QUESTIONS, AND BE SURE TO ACTIVELY LISTEN TO THE RESPONSE. I am someone who cares and wants to listen. What do yo want me to know abot how yo are feeling? I ve been concerned abot yo. Can we talk abot what yo are experiencing? If not, whom are yo comfortable talking to? I m concerned abot yor safety. If yo ever have thoghts abot harming yorself or others, whom cold yo contact for help? Sometimes talking to someone who has dealt with a similar experience helps. If yo know others with similar experiences, who are they? It seems like yo are going throgh a difficlt time. How can I help yo to find help? Who or what has helped yo deal with similar isses in the past? How can I help yo to find more information abot mental-health treatment? Generally, qestions that allow Yes-No answers are not as sefl as more open-ended qestions. As a Trillim Commnity Health Plan (Trillim) member, there is a Behavioral health benefit to help those with these isses. Call s at: , Toll-Free, TTY. PRIVACY RIGHTS As a Trillim Commnity Health Plan (Trillim) member yo have privacy rights as otlined in the Notice of Privacy Practices. A copy of this notice is available on Trillim s website at: To reqest a paper copy, please call: Trillim Member Services Monday throgh Friday, Hors: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Telephone: (541) , Toll Free: 1(877) , or TTY: 1(877) Page 16 Member Isse 1 Volme

This gives patients something to refer to when they get home. Follow p calls to check in on patients who have gotten new medicines or diagnosis. Many patients don t feel right calling their doctor with qestions. This takes the brden off the patient and helps with answers to qestions that might come p. MOST OF US HAVE A HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING THE MEDICAL TERMS OUR DOCTORS USE. WHEN WE ARE SICK, WORRIED OR TIRED, IT IS EVEN HARDER TO MAKE SENSE OF THIS INFORMATION. It is important that patients and their doctors nderstand each other. Becase if we don t know how to manage or illness, inclding how to se medication, it can keep s from being healthy. Doctors are working on new ways to commnicate so that every patient nderstands what they are being told. Trillim is helping health care providers become more health literate which means making sre that patients nderstand the information they need to make good health decisions. THERE ARE SEVERAL AP- PROACHES PROVIDERS CAN USE. THEY INCLUDE THINGS LIKE: Not sing jargon, or words only medical professionals nderstand. An example wold be sing high blood pressre instead of hypertension. Asking patients to share what they think the doctor said. The patient is asked will yo tell me what yo heard me say so I can be sre I didn t miss anything? This allows the doctor to know if they were clear explaining things, and to try again, if they need to. Using written material that is clear, easy to nderstand, and in the patients preferred langage. COMMUNICATION IS A TWO WAY STREET. THERE ARE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO BE SURE THAT YOU LEAVE THE DOCTORS OFFICE WITH THE INFOR- MATION YOU NEED TO MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES. Don t be afraid to ask qestions. Patients often don t want to ask qestions becase it makes them feel like they aren t smart enogh. Remember when it comes to yor health care, there are no stpid qestions. Ask yor doctor to write things down. It s ok to ask yor provider to write down what he or she has told yo, so yo can read it again later. If something isn t working, don t be afraid to call yor doctor s office and ask for help. They want yo to be healthy. Member Isse 1 Volme Page 17

MEDICARE AND MEDICAID FRAUD & ABUSE: PREVENTION, DETECTION, AND REPORTING By the Compliance Department and the CMS Frad Prevention Unit Medicare and Medicaid frad and abse is a serios problem reqiring yor attention. Althogh there is no precise measre of health care frad and the majority of health care providers are honest and well intentioned, a minority of providers who are intent on absing the system can cost taxpayers billions of dollars and pt beneficiaries health and welfare at risk. The impact of these losses and risks is magnified by the growing nmber of people served by Medicare and the increased strain on federal and state bdgets. Yo play a vital role in protecting the integrity of the Medicare and Medicaid Program. To combat frad and abse, yo need to know what to watch for to protect yorself from potential absive practices, civil liability, and perhaps criminal activity. This fact sheet gives yo some of the tools yo need to protect the Medicare Program, inclding the definitions of Medicare frad and abse, and resorces on how yo can report sspected frad and abse. What Is Medicare and Medicaid Frad? In general, frad is defined as making false statements or representations of material facts to obtain some benefit or payment for which no entitlement wold otherwise exist. These acts may be committed either for the person s own benefit or for the benefit of some other party. In other words, frad incldes the obtaining of something of vale throgh misrepresentation or concealment of material facts. Frad schemes range from solo to broad-based operations by an instittion or grop. Anyone can commit health care frad. Yo may even know someone who has committed frad. Organized crime is also infiltrating the Medicare and Medicaid Program and may be masqerading as Medicare providers and sppliers. Examples of Medicare and Medicaid frad may inclde: Knowingly billing for services that were not frnished and/or spplies not provided, inclding billing Medicare and Medicaid for appointments that the patient failed to keep; and Knowingly altering claims forms and/or receipts to receive a higher payment amont. Report any sspected frad to Trillim Commnity Health Plan by calling or Frad Hotline at (877) Yo can also report sspected frad by contracting the Oregon Department of Jstice online at by calling (877) or by contacting the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services at (800) , TTY: Page 18 Member Isse 1 Volme
