2 Colon cancer is the only PREVENTABLE cancer, which can be achieved throgh screening colonoscopy beginning at age 50, or sooner if there is a family history. Or objective is to bring awareness to the pblic on the fight against colon cancer and increase the nmber of screenings performed in or commnity. As the leading cancer care provider in the area, Watson Clinic Cancer & Research Center is flly committed to winning this battle as evidenced by or pledge with the American Cancer Society to increase colon screening of qalified individals to 80% by the year % by 2018 is a National Colorectal Cancer Rondtable initiative in which dozens of organizations have committed to eliminating colorectal cancer as a major pblic health problem and are working toward the shared goal of 80% of adlts aged 50 and older being reglarly screened for colorectal cancer by The American Cancer Society Cancer Facts and Figres 2013 pblication estimates that in 2013 more than 142,820 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and over 50,000 people will die of the disease in the United States. An article pblished in or monthly newsletter reminded or physicians and staff of the need to discss screening colonoscopy with their patients Jly A Health Scene magazine article written by gastroenterologists regarding colorectal screening was direct mailed in the Smmer 2015 to approximately 70,000 hoseholds. There are several screening test options. It is important to discss with yor physician which of these options is right for yo. Colonoscopy Fecal Immnochemical Test (FIT) Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Doble Contrast Barim Screening Virtal Colonoscopy (CT Colonography) Cologard The following data compares 2014 vs to measre the efforts to increase awareness. These 2014 & 2015 patients range from years of age with an appointment arrival with internal medicine and family practice: Or otreach efforts have inclded, bt will not be limited to: A free commnity edcational lectre held in March of 2015 which, featred medical oncologists, gastroenterologist and a general srgeon. Fecal Immnochemical Test (FIT) kits were provided to the attendees of this event. The following nmber retrned their kits and were provided otcomes: 2 35 free FIT tests given ot 14 FIT tests retrned 14 negative reslts 2014 = 31, = 32,560 Colonoscopy is the endoscopic examination of the large bowel and the distal part of the small bowel. A camera or fiber optic camera on a flexible tbe is passed throgh the ans, and provides a visal diagnosis and allows for biopsy. Colonoscopy can remove polyps as small as one millimeter or less. 3
3 Diagnostic: A symptom or a distingishing featre serving as spporting evidence in a diagnosis. Flexible Sigmoidoscopy: An exam sed to evalate the lower part of the large intestine (colon). This procedre does not allow the physician to see the entire colon. As a reslt, any cancers or polyps farther into the colon cannot be detected by flexible sigmoidoscopy alone. Screening: A preventive measre sed to identify potential or incipient disease at an early, sally asymptomatic stage. Barim Screening: A radiographic stdy in which a soltion containing barim slfate is administered into the rectm in order to visalize the lower intestinal tract. There was no barim screening for 2014 and 2015 Fecal Immnochemical Test (FIT) : A screening test for colon cancer. It tests for hidden blood in the stool, which can be an early sign of cancer. FIT only detects hman blood from the lower intestines. 4 5
4 We are committed to the goal set by the American Cancer Society of 80% by Cologard testing started in April of The nmber of retrned COLOGUARD kits from April 2015 throgh Febrary 2016 is as follows: Also, please discss with yor physician which screening test may be right for yo especially if yo have a family history of colon cancer. 480 kits sent ot from cologard 246 kits retrned 35 positive reslts Virtal Colonoscopy: This exam ses 2D and 3D imagery reconstrcted from a compted tomography (CT) scan or from a nclear magnetic resonance (MR) scan. It is a non-invasive medical test, althogh it is not a standard test performed and is still nder investigation regarding its diagnostic abilities. Please join s in talking with yor friends and families to remind them that colon cancer is HIGHLY preventable. Cologard: A DNA non-invasive test that identifies DNA changes in the cells of a stool sample. Cologard is a screening test that ses mltiple-markers and stool DNA technology to detect colorectal cancer and pre-cancer. The Medical Oncologists for the Watson Clinic Cancer & Research Center recommend colonoscopy as the gold standard for screening. Smmary: Althogh the nmber of screening colonoscopies in 2015 increased overall, the reslts of colon cancer screening for 2015 were disappointing. The total nmber of screenings for colon cancer were lower in 2015 vs Or ftre direction is to increase or otreach efforts by engaging and edcating the commnity.
