1 SPANAPARK LIONS CLUB OCTOBER 2016 NEWSLETTER Editor - Bob McLean - Teacherbobmclean@aol.com CLUB PRESIDENT WALLY CHYR DEDICATION: I would like to bring to the forefront the famous words but never widely heard, except normally in baseball: Stepping Up to the Plate. A quiet and restrained; subdued phrase; 1 st baseman, Wally, stepping up to the plate struck out last 4 times at bat; almost meaningless and taken for granted. But its total meaning is very impressive when talking about an individual filling a void to do a task that was critical or needed to be accomplished. It brings uplifted ears. Yes, I said Ears. Just like calling out to a dog named Wally and his ears perk up when his name is called. Because we then realize that we are talking about a person Stepping Up to the Plate and performing an act or task. We all have at one time or another known of them or been that individual. Those around them take notice. They are committed to the cause. Of course, the same goes when things don t get done; gets noticed as well. COMMITMENT is one of the Four (4) C s that I talked about previously. In as much as we have been downsized lately and have fewer members to carry the load, it is essential that each member try to carry out his/her duties to the best of their ability. At the same time each member should evaluate their personal commitments and ask for relief from the project or task if it becomes an obstacle and can no longer perform them or on time. We will do our best with what we got at hand. Unfortunately, we all still hate to commit, take a chance or gamble. We should never discount ourselves in our abilities, but have a can do attitude and go for it. There will always be someone to give support and back up. Then we come to COMMUNICATION that organizations have short falls in, but most do an excellent job and that is important. As time goes and we work diligently and wisely, there will always be strength as we increase in numbers. We won t be like a field of the forgotten, a Pauper Cemetery. We will be remembered. There will be many smiles to go around as our name is mentioned. Only we can set the stage. Cooperation collectively, is essential for the success of every organization. In Lions, it is not a short term but a long commitment to the ideals set forth by Lions Club International and Motto: We Serve. We are now in the mist of the great Legionnaires and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, Post #2. We have had several meeting recently at our new location. Partnering and building stronger relations will reinforce our commitment together to serve our Veterans and the Local Community. To be successful takes hard work and dedication. If you don t succeed the first time, you try and try again. We are part of the LARGEST Humanitarian Service organization in the world "Lions Clubs International". Making each of us and our community better - makes our whole world better. While Lions Clubs International may best be known for our work with "Eye Sight, the Blind and collecting eye glasses"...the LIONS everywhere and in Spanaway / Parkland do so much more. We Sponsor and participate in events, projects and programs that enhance our community and our members such as; "Safe Streets", "Northwest Lions Eyeglass Recycling center", "Providing Free Eye Glasses and Hearing Aids", "Local Food Banks", "Associated Ministries", "Adopting a Family for a year", "Delivering Free Dictionaries to 3rd Grade Students", "Project New Hope helping Military Veterans and their Families", "Camp Leo for Diabetic Children" and so much more. We also have "Leadership Training programs", "Educational and Informative Speakers", and our main fundraiser "The Spanapark Lions Annual Bowling Classic for the 20th year - Coming March 19th, Think of it this way... A library is filled with many books. But not just one type of book. Not just one topic or subject... there is a whole variety to choose from. AND... there are many different types of people who read those books. In the same way - the SPANAPARK Lions have a great selection of opportunities to be involved with. Really, the only limitation to what we do is your heart, your imagination and your desire to make a difference. Every great accomplishment, every great idea or invention or major breakthrough, Every song written or picture painted... all started with just one person having an idea, having a vision, being inspired. Consider what you can accomplish by being a member of the Lions. It's YOUR turn to make a difference. There is something for everyone in the Lions Club. 5 Show your Lions support for our environment! Help at the MD19 Meeker Creek work party Oct 29th Meeker Creek Habitat Stewardship Work Party Saturday, October 29, 2016 They City of Puyallup took 1,000ft of linear ditch and converted it to a meandering stream channel with a wide streamside planting buffer to enhance water quality and support salmon. Habitat Stewards are working today to keep our young trees alive by mulching and watering over the summer. Many hands make light work and the team is looking for 10 volunteers to help. What to Bring: Sturdy shoes, clothes to get dirty in, long sleeves, gloves, hat, water. Optional: Shovels, loppers, buckets, wheelbarrows some gloves and tools will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring your own if you have them and can bring them What We Will Do: Summer work is important. Stewards will continue removing Blackberry, clearing RCG from small trees, mulching, and watering young trees. Where to Meet: Cul-de-sac at the end of 18th St SW. Nearest address: th St SW, Puyallup. Rikki McGee - Habitat Steward - drpmcgee@gmail.com Managing your participation in Lions [part 1] When we become a Lion member - we are introduced to a great number of projects, programs, dinners, events, fundraisers, etc. Unless you are independently wealthy - participation in these events can be costly and overwhelming. Most of you are probably like me and struggle with the desire to be a good member who wants to be involved versus the commitment of time and finances. These are two separate issues and with a little understanding can be easily managed. But, keep in mind that nothing works without us contributing one or the other. First - "Your Time". You joined for a reason. You have an important role. Your opinions and involvement are desired and of great value to the success of our club, our community and the Lions Organization. Being there makes a difference and your voice counts. You paid your membership dues - don't throw that money away by not participating. That would be like signing up for an educational class and never showing up to learn or paying for a dinner and never eating the food. You owe it to yourself to get your monies worth. Second - "Your Finances". You can participate in and visit most Lions meetings without having to buy dinner. So, when it comes to deciding if you can afford to go or not - think of it like this; Lions is a life experience. There is so much to choose from and so many things to do, to learn and great people to meet. Participating in Lions events is a great way to invest your time and a great benefit to everyone. It not only bolsters our numbers in attendance but it increases the excitement and enthusiasm as well. It's reciprocal. You...make a difference..! So if you eat out sometimes... why not eat out at a Lions meeting or take your "love" to a lions event like "The Bowling Classic". Invest your time and money wisely. 6 VISIT TO ALASKA LIONS CLUBS Eagle River, Big Lake, Willow Lions Clubs Palmer, Chugiac, Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions Clubs The Eagle River Lions in Alaska have this beautiful facility and community park outside of Anchorage in Eagle River.
