Did you ever think you could be in 3 places at the same time..? Here we are half way through our Lions year, the end of 2015 and the beginning of Where will we go from here..? I want to say THANK YOU to all of our members for helping us become such an excellent Lions club and all we have done to help our community. We make a difference because you care...! Most of us are probably familiar with the practice of making "New Year's Resolutions" at this time of year. They usually center around "Health and Finances and Family". (eat less / lose weight, spend less / save more, work less / spend more time with family and friends. I hope you will also think about how we can become a better Lions club. What can we do to help more people.. to make a bigger difference..? What projects of programs would YOU like to see or do..? I'm not talking about you doing more work. I want you to have the best experience possible as a member of the Lions. I want you to have fun being a Lion. So ask yourself..."what would I like to do..?" I believe one of the greatest satisfactions we can have in life is "knowing we made a difference..!" Remember... every great accomplishment, every significant achievement happened because (first) one person had an "IDEA". So... maybe now it's your time to share your ideas and shine. Thank you again for all you do. You already make a difference in my life. There will be an Induction Ceremony at both of our regular meetings in January on the Tuesday the 5th and Tuesday the 19th. I encourage all our members to attend both meetings and ceremonies to help welcome these fine men and women into the Lions Organization. 2 CENTENNIAL LION Breaking News!!!! From Domestic to International news, around the world, for our members. In 2017, Lions Clubs International will observe a Centennial Celebration. In layman s terms, it means 100 Years!!! The LCI Centennial Membership Awards program recognize Lions who invite a new member or help organize a new club. Lions have an opportunity to earn Centennial Sponsor pins and Certificates, and then some. The longer the new member you sponsored stays active, the more you earn though the progressive level awards. Additionally, each Lions Clubs can also earn awards by inducting three new members in a fiscal year. So we have started this year off with a bang!!! We have four (4) new members stemming out of our successful Open House event and three (3) more thereafter. Regarding the awards program, more information can be found on LCI web site or MD 19 at More to come on the horizon. In fact, surf the web and you will be surprised what you will find. Lion Wally, Membership Chair INDUCTION CEREMONY On December 1st we had our first Induction Ceremony this Lions year. Our Inducting Officer was PCC Mike Gayda with the help of Lion Diana Andrews. Two (2) members were inducted: Lions June Ferreira and Chuck Youngquist. The next ceremonies will be held on Tuesday January 5 and/or January 19, We will be doing both dates to accommodate the Lions. Members to be Inducted are: Lion Mark Willis, Linda Youngquist, Tim Sidorski, Laura Sidorski and Debora Burks. Sponsors for each of these members will be responsible to notify and bring them to the meeting. This one will be a dozy, so make plans to attend. COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT On 3 December 2015, our committee met to finalize and approve the Community Needs Assessment Questionnaire and our Cover Letter. Seven (7) members attended. This is one of our very important projects that we have been discussing for quite some time. Our work ahead will not be a simple task. The fruit of our labor will depend on how dedicated and resourceful we become. And it will show. Make a list of at least five (5) or more people you think should take the assessment. Bring your list of contacts to our 2nd meeting, 19 Jan Hopefully we used the holidays as an opportunity to assist in our gathering of contacts. And, if you were comfortable you started contacting immediately. We need to take our time. Quality is better than Quantity. There will be a committee meeting on 4 Feb 16 to assess our progress. All assessments will be brought to our 2nd meeting on 16 Feb 16. Once the questionnaires have been compiled, the task force can begin reviewing and analyzing the results. Remember: Use the method of contact that best fits the situation of each contact. Decide who to contact in the community. Initial, personal face to face contact is the best. We need to also take this opportunity getting feelers on additional Fund Raisers, jointly with another activity or just conduct one ourselves. Remember each contact is a potential member. Lion Wally, Membership Chair Newsletter Articles Articles, Reports, Recipes, Jokes, etc. should be submitted to the Newsletter Editor no later than the 25th of the month to assure that it will appear in the following month s edition. 3 MEMBERSHIP Congratulations!!! We are so proud of our membership and the outstanding work that we did on bringing on board seven (7) new members in the first half of the fiscal year. The LIONS are: June Ferreira, Charles Youngquist, Linda Youngquist, Mark Willis, Tim Sidorski, Laura Sidorski and Debora Burks. We need to ensure we are welcoming our members and making them feel like family. At our last meeting, we received an application from Mr. Keith Foley of the American Legion Post 2 who, once voted on, will be our 8 th new member. Something to think about and Ask: 1) Have I made the new member feel welcome? 2) Have I given them responsibility? 3) Have I valued their input, and respected their ideas? 4) Have I made them feel like a member of the family? We need to be sensitive and handle matters delicately as we mentor our new family members in a positive development. You know the ole saying treat them with kids gloves. Remember they are Newbie s to the game. No information overload. I recommend that we get them on a committee right away. Awards Programs Lions Clubs International offers various membership award programs to recognize Lions and clubs for their accomplishments. Our Secretary will keep track and keep us posted on submissions in order for us to be properly and timely awarded. As the membership chairperson, it is important that I share the following opportunities for recognition with our club members to encourage them to recruit new members and keep current members satisfied: 1. Sponsorship Certificate: Lions that sponsor a new member anytime in the Lions year receive a certificate of sponsorship signed by the international president. 2. Membership Growth Award: Lions that sponsor a member in either October or April receive the Silver Membership Growth Award Pin. Lions that sponsor a member in October and April receive both the Silver and Gold Membership Growth Award Pin. Clubs that add new members in both October and April receive the Membership Growth Award Banner Patch. 3. Year-Round Growth: Lions that sponsor three or more members during the fiscal year receive the Year-Round Growth Lapel Pin. Clubs that end the year net positive in membership receive the Year-Round Growth Banner Patch. 4. Membership Key Awards: Lions earn their first membership key by inviting two new members and may earn up to seventeen keys for member invitation. Each key is designed to reflect the number of new members a Lion has sponsored. 5. Member Satisfaction Award: Lions clubs that maintain 90 percent of their membership or reverse long-term membership loss in a fiscal year receive the Member Satisfaction Banner Patch. 6. Chevron Awards: Beginning at 10 years, and continuing in 5 year increments, Lions are recognized with a Chevron Pin for their long-term service. 4 Did You Know? Information about Lions - By PDG Frank Paul There are many Lions in our District who serve above the Club level. Of course the obvious ones are the District Governor and Zone Chairs. However there are many staff members who work directly for the Governor and Zone Chairs as cabinet members. These Lions must also be recognized as dedicated club members who have chosen to step beyond their club to serve not only the citizens of their communities, but also to serve their fellow Lions. Certainly the District Governor along with his/ her staff are vital to the operation of an efficient and progressive Lions' District. However, closer to our Lions club is the Zone Chair. In my opinion, this one Lion can do more to influence the local Lions Clubs by their leadership and actions than any other Lions leader. The Zone Chairs in our Zone, and for that matter, all around this Multiple District 19, have shown outstanding leadership over the years. I believe that the primary reason for their exceptional success is the training and guidance that is provided for them through this District and Multiple District 19. Also, did you know that our Multiple District 19 is one of the few throughout Lions Clubs International that the Zone Chairs are elected by their fellow Lions? Most Zone Chairs are simply appointed by the local District Governor. Have you considered that move beyond service to your community? You can start by simply volunteering to serve on the local Zone Cabinet. This coming Lions year of , our own Lion Suzanne Gayda will be C5 Zone Chair. You can take an even bolder step and volunteer to help at the District level. Or, maybe your sights are set on something a little higher. Whatever your aspirations are to advance in Lions, be aware that there are sometimes prerequisites for certain offices. The rules can be found in the Club, District and Multiple District Constitution and By-Laws. Involve A U.S. Veteran Program On 1 December 2015 regular meeting, we had three (3) guests from the American Legion Post 2, located at Park Avenue South, Parkland, WA 98444: Adjutant Legionnaire Keith Foley, Legionnaire Ron Ingle and Auxiliary Secretary Connie Ingle. Lion President Bob on behalf of the Spanapark Lions Club members presented 79 pairs of men s socks toward their Annual Sock Collection that is donated to Clothing Closet at American Lake Veterans Medical Center. We had previously donated $250 toward the sock program on Veterans Day, November 11th for the Veterans. This year total of Post 2 sock donation was 830 pairs. Lions Bob and Wally will be visiting Post 2 on a regular basis as we move forward on our commitment to further foster our relationship and to jointly serve the community. 6 We had a very successful and fulfilling time handing out dictionaries to the 3 rd grade classes this year. A total of 8 schools and 800 dictionaries were involved. The students were very attentive and the majority had older brothers or sisters that still had their dictionaries from past years. Thank you to all that participated and to Lion Dana Reynolds for ordering and coordinating the delivery schedule. Lions for Life / Lions Journey There are 2 member activation and involvement programs available to Lions members. Both are similar in design. The first is from our Multiple District 19 Lions Organization and designed for New members of Lions to be accomplished within their first 2 years. 20Guide pdf The second was redesigned and developed from our District "19C" Lions organization to encompass all Lions members (veteran members and new members) and These programs involve a series of steps for each member to accomplish such as; Visiting other Lions Clubs, working on a community service project, attending an orientation about Lions, bringing in a new member, etc. Each of you has the opportunity to participate in these programs. 7 Humor??? Pun fun! I tried to catch some Fog, but I mist. Jokes about German sausages are the wurst. A solder who survived mustard gas and then pepper spray is now a seasoned veteran. A friend of mine is addicted to brake fluid, but he says he can stop anytime. I stayed up all night to see where the sun had gone, and then it suddenly dawned on me. I am reading a very interesting book about anti-gravity and I can t seem to put it down. I once did a theatrical performance about puns. It was a play on words. I read a report that said I have type A blood, but then I found out it was a Type O. The Energizer Bunny was arrested: He was charged with battery. At first I didn t like my beard, but then it grew on me. I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger, then it hit me. Solution to Brainteaser on page 4 Thinking out of the box! Page 7
