1 Lincoln East Club 1528 Rotary Spoke 58nd Yr Issue 14 Last Meeting Attending 29 (60%) w/makeups 5 (71%) October 5, 2011 Editor: Dave Miller dplrmiller@windstream.net Lincoln East Rotary, 2511 County Down Court, Lincoln, NE Meetings: Wednesdays 11:45 a.m. at Valentino s on South 70th and Van Dorn Lincoln East Club web site: Oct 12 John Ingrahm UNL Facilties Expansion Oct 5th Robert Rauner, MD - Is there really hunger in Lincoln Dr. Rauner was praying that we would receive the full impact of his message about obesity in our Lincoln School District. Robert attended Creighton University. He opened his General Practice in Sydney, NE. From there he joined the Medical Education Group here in Lincoln. He is on staff there in a teaching position. Chuck added that Robert is a social entrepreneur. He makes good things happen. He began identifying what is hunger for kids in Lincoln. He quoted a janitor in a Lincoln school who said if there is so much hunger in Lincoln, why is there so much food in the garbage cans Robert responded with they only have 10 minutes to eat. We take an hour to eat. Quite a comparison. What data is there about this hunger issue While there is a small number of hungry children, is that the real story We now have accurate data to better understand the truth on 24,000 kids in our schools. Our data breaks down the under nourished and the obese. When he was a child, obesity ran about 5% and now is it 15% - 17%. We viewed some data that matched those percentages. Some athletes build muscle mass that pushes up their weights and are not part of the sample. They are in a yellow category. We now have only 2% who are underweight. Wealth did not seem to affect the percentage of under weight. In the poorest families, the ratio of obese to under weight is 10 to 1. The more he used economic status divisions, the obesity percentages just grew. There are a lot of obese kids in our schools in Lincoln. Our other great fear is the fitness levels in our students. Even if you are obese but still fit, it doesn t affect your health nearly as much. The measure of unfit children are kids who cannot play 5 minutes of basketball before stopping. He watched a group of eleven year olds play basketball. Half of them had to stop to rest after just five minutes! They asked to be taken out of the game. We have a lot of unfit kids in Lincoln. There are 1,500 kids who cannot pass these fitness tests and they are not very hard. Their life expectencies are probably 10 to 20 years shorter than the rest of us. That is a big difference. This is our biggest problem in Lincoln right now. These unfit kids that are obese must receive more attention. Obese is measuring these kids to a group of kids from the 1970 s. There some tests that measure for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. Why is it this way How can this happen when this person hasn t enough money to buy food and yet is obese The type of food being consumed is the issue. We have changed from being the skinny and malnourished kid to being kids who are now obese and malnourished because they get too many calories but not enough iron, vitamins and fiber. Food raisers are measured how many pounds are collected and when you get to the food bank, there is all of the cheap food ie; the rice dishes. Fifty pounds of food sounds good, but all you are providing is something that is only going to make the problem worse. Healthier food is more expensive. Whole wheat mac and cheese costs more but is much better with the fiber, vitamins and many other good things for children. The Dollar Meal is cheap but is very low on quality. They have very few vitamins and other needed supplements. Robert then reviewed the food chain from top to bottom with all the low cost and high calories at the bottom and the good foods with fewer calories and higher vitamins at the top of desirability for good health. Food subsidies reward making cheap food lower in cost and high in quality foods un-supported. The poorer people buy the food based on cost not value. Our country and it s youth are thus suffering. Thank you Dr. Rauner., Saturday, October 15th - Rotary Leadership Institute with Larry Fletcher. Session will be held in Westminster Presterian 27th and Sheridan Blvd. Time is 8:00 am till 3:00pm. FREE SESSION & MEAL
