PROFESSIONAL AND RESEARCH INTERESTS Substance-Related Disorders and their co-occurrence with domestic violence, traumatic or acquired brain injury, chronic pain, and mental disorders. CURRENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AND GRANTS Principal Investigator Alternative Sentencing Diversion Program Outcome Study. May 2012 to present. This is funded by the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy to examine the effects of social work services in response to HB 463 to reduce incarceration. The DPA program pairs social workers with attorneys to establish diversion plans for defendants. Annual award of $47,300. Co-Investigator Kentucky Substance Abuse Treatment Outcome Study. April 2005 to present (Co-PI and Study Director from 1999 to 2005). This is a state-funded, legislatively mandated outcome study funded by the Kentucky Division of Substance Abuse under an annual, renewable contract. Annual award to the University of Kentucky currently at $670,000. 1

2 Co-investigator Opiate Replacement Treatment Program data system and outcomes project. January 2005 to present. This state-funded project uses baseline and follow-up measures as well as dose change measures, urinalysis results, and take-home exception request processing. Annual award is part of the KTOS system and SDI initiative. Co-investigator Criminal Justice Kentucky Treatment Outcome Study to present. Funded by the Kentucky Department of Corrections, this study examines treatment outcomes for inmates with drug related charges who are in corrections-based treatment. The study uses baseline to 12 post-release from prison follow-ups. Annual award $160,000. COMPLETED RESEARCH ACTIVITIES Co-Investigator Evaluator Kids Now Plus Project. July This is a statefunded program using case management oriented early interventions for pregnant women at risk for substance abuse. The evaluation study is to include process as well as clinical outcomes using pre-post data on women served. Annual award, $70,000. Principal Investigator Evaluator - Families in Safe Homes Network (FISHN). November 2007 October This Kentucky River Community Care project is funded by the Administration for Child and Family services (ACF) in the Department for Health and Human Services. The evaluation contract with Kentucky River Community Care is for $50,000 for each of the five years of the project, $250,000 over the five year grant period. Principal Investigator Evaluator - Independence House Project for Pregnant and Postpartum Women. October 2008 September This CSAT-funded project for $1.5 million over three years is for residential treatment for pregnant and postpartum women in Appalachian Kentucky. Project grant written by Robert Walker, evaluation component conducted by CDAR with an annual award of $78,000 for each of three years. Principal Investigator IMPACT Program data system and services outcomes project. July This is a state-funded project including the design, development, management, originally using a PDA-based data collection system with six month followup interviews to examine change after services. Later converted to an online data collection system. Annual research award, $100,000 Principal Investigator Evaluator Kentucky Youth First. September 2005 October This is a CSAT/SAMHSA grant written by Robert Walker to develop increased and improved adolescent substance abuse treatment in Kentucky with an annual award of $400,000. The evaluation includes process measures of administrative actions and client level data from the Adolescent KTOS project. Annual award for research of $75,000. Principal Investigator Evaluator Family Futures Family Treatment Drug Court. October 2005 May This is a CSAT funded project for Fayette County that implements a treatment drug court with an annual award of $400,000 for each of three years. Project grant written by Robert Walker, evaluation component conducted by CDAR with an annual research award of $74,000. 2

3 Co-Investigator - A Rural and Urban Multiple Perspective Study of Protective Order Violation Consequences, Responses, & Costs. (September July 2008). National Institute of Justice. Award amount $250,000. Principal Investigator/Evaluator Turning It Around. (October 2001 August 2004) This was a CSAT funded substance abuse project serving inner city non-involved fathers with substance abuse problems. This project included measures of fathering behavior, cognitive ability, gambling, and employment characteristics among non-involved fathers. Total award to Jefferson County Fiscal Court: $1,500,000. University of Kentucky award: $237,180. Principal Investigator TBI Household Survey (October 2002 June 2003) This was a state-funded household telephone survey of the prevalence of brain injury in Kentucky. Sample included 3300 households in Kentucky. Total research award: $40,000. Principal Investigator/Evaluator Kentucky River Appalachian Project (March 1999 January 2003). This was a CSAT funded substance abuse project serving rural Appalachian substance abusers. Evaluation focused on measuring retention, client characteristics associated with longer stays in treatment and characteristics associated with changes in substance use such as brain injury. October 2000 January 2003 total award to Kentucky River Community Care: $1,450,000. University of Kentucky award: $330,250 for the three years. Principal Investigator State Data Infrastructure Project. September 2002 October This project was funded by CSAT for almost four years including the no-cost extension period. Traditionally funded at the $100,000 level by state government to continue to improve client level data collection to meet national outcome measures for Kentucky reduced to $65,000 in SFY Co-Investigator Police Attitudes Regarding Drug Courts (July November 2000), a study conducted in Lexington, Kentucky with 369 police officers. Co-Investigator Custody Evaluations in Divorce Actions (June August 2000). This was a study of court records on divorce cases examining resolution of domestic violence and non-domestic violence cases. A content analysis of child custody evaluations included in court records in one circuit court in Kentucky. The study examined consistency of reports to ethical and practice standards. Consultant Robert Wood Johnson Grant for Kentucky River Community Care, a project for $450,000 for three years. Grant led to contract with UK for consultant services on this cross site evaluation effort in concert with the Urban Institute. Project funded and contract with UK for $10,000/year for 3 years. Co-Principal Investigator Prescription Drug Use in Eastern Kentucky. January 2004 December Funded ($170,000) by Purdue Pharma to examine patterns of prescription drug use with particular focus on opiates. Co-Principal Investigator Alcohol, Violence, and Health Service in Rural Women. September 2000 August 2006 (no-cost extension). This NIAAA funded project researches characteristics of urban and rural domestic violence victims using a protective order sample of 750 women. Total award, $2,239,382. 3
