Scott Firefighter Stairclimb Volunteer Training Top Floor
Thank you for volunteering to assist on the Top Floor at the 2017 Scott Firefighter Stairclimb! The Top Floor is one of the most critical areas of the Stairclimb and it is very important that everyone working in this area have a strong understanding of their role. Please review the information here carefully as it will all be important for you to know on event day. This training is required for all new as well as veteran Top Floor volunteers. After reviewing, you will be asked to complete a knowledge test. This must be done and submitted by 5:00pm PST Wednesday, March 8 th. We will confirm once it has been received and review any incorrect answers with you to ensure that you are fully prepared to perform your volunteer duties at the event. If we have not received your completed form by the due date you will not be allowed to volunteer on the Top Floor this year. Please contact Charmaine Dipola (charmaine.dipola@lls.org, ) with any questions or concerns. Thank you again and we look forward to working with you!
General Notes Please dress appropriately and sensibly. Jeans or athletic pants with tennis shoes are best. You will be provided a white volunteer t-shirt at check in that you will be required to wear during your shift. No skirts, shorts, tank tops or high heels. When you arrive on the Top Floor, please check in with one of our lead volunteers Heidi or Alan (who can be easily identified by their red shirts). They will be in charge of all aspects of the Top Floor so please follow their instructions closely. Should you have any questions or concerns during your shift they can assist you. Please treat the firefighters with respect and behave in an appropriate manner at all times. Flirtatious comments or behavior will not be tolerated this is a serious volunteer role and we are all there to support the participants as they take on an incredible challenge for our mission: to cure blood cancers. Please treat one another with respect and be courteous to your fellow volunteers. The stress of a fast-paced environment can at times be challenging, but remember we re all doing this for the same reason to support the event and participants and working together will ensure the most enjoyable experience for everyone!
Timing Chips This is the timing chip table at the Finish Line. Each participant will be wearing a chip that records their completion time at this point so some volunteers will be stationed here to make sure they wave their arm over this table as they complete the Stairclimb. This is a very competitive event so it is important that all timing chips register!
As each participant finishes, a team of one Civilian Volunteer (you) and one Dyad or Tandem Partner (a volunteer firefighter, EMT or cadet) will immediately meet them to offer assistance. Finish Line
Finish Line Once the participant has finished, you as the Civilian Volunteer will walk in front to lead while your Dyad Partner will walk behind to push the participant forward while disconnecting the regulator and removing the air tank. Move them as quickly as possible away from the finish line to avoid a backup. Many firefighters may be disoriented when they arrive so you will need to be persistent as you prompt them toward the Recovery Area (and at times physically lead them out of the way).
Finish Line to Recovery Area The first step as you lead your participant away from the finish line should be to help them remove their regulator/mask. Make sure the regulator (which is connected to the mask and supplies air) has been disconnected by your Dyad Partner before doing so. You will continue to lead your participant down this hallway as you help them remove their gloves and coat. Your Dyad Partner will remove the SCBA tank as they push the firefighter forward with you in the lead.
Finish Line to Recovery Area Once out of the first hallway, you will turn left into the viewing area. Your Dyad Partner should have the SCBA tank shut down and pack removed. He/She will transfer all of this gear to you. Slip it over your shoulder as you continue leading your participant down this hallway. Volunteers should be prepared to carry up to 50 lbs. of gear!
Medic Station Many participants appear to be in distress as they finish the Stairclimb, but may not need immediate medical attention and will be ok after normal recovery time. Your Dyad Partner or one of our nurse volunteers (who will be wearing a sticker indicating that they are a trained professional) should determine whether the participant is sick. If you have a sick participant, you should immediately notify the on-site EMTs. If you are able to get them to the EMT station (which will be the next area that you come to), please do so. If not, move them away from the finish line to a safe place where the EMTs can tend to them.
Finish Line to Recovery Area Cont. The majority of your participants should be fit to begin normal recovery without medical attention. For those, turn left from the Medic Station and follow this hallway to the Recovery Area. Note: To the right of you will be the Honoree Area. Honorees (survivors or those currently in treatment who the firefighters are climbing in honor of) and their families will be observing them finish from here. They will have a volunteer escort with them at all times and should not cross over the ropes or block the participant s path to the Recovery Area.
Recovery Area Once you have reached the Recovery Area, find an empty seat for your firefighter. Place their gear in front or beside them. Make sure their gloves are IN their helmet so they don t leave them behind. Watch for ear buds and music players. Congratulate the firefighter on a job well done he/she just CLIMBED 1,356 steps and CONQUERED 788 feet of vertical elevation in full gear all in the name of CURE for blood cancers!
Repeat Continue around the Recovery Area to rejoin the volunteer line and do it all again! Recovery Area Over Flow Continue though to the finish line. Back hall towards service elevators and bathrooms. More Recovery Area
Post-Recovery It typically takes 15 minutes or less for a firefighter to recover after finishing the climb. Once able, all participants must immediately leave the Top Floor and take the elevator downstairs. Participants are not allowed to wait for their teammates to finish climbing. The ONLY exception is if the participant is a survivor. You will be able to tell by this Survivor Battalion emblem on their helmet: If you see a firefighter who is recovered and obviously able to move out of the Recovery Area (and not a survivor), please encourage them to do so. We have snacks and refreshments waiting for them when they get down!
This is a fast paced, dirty, and physically exhausting job. But it will also be one of the most rewarding, gratifying and amazing volunteer opportunities that you will ever experience. Thank you for being a part of the 2017 Scott Firefighter Stairclimb! Climb. Conquer. Cure.
Training Completion & Knowledge Test After thoroughly reviewing this training, please click this link to take a knowledge test and complete your Top Floor volunteer training. This must be done and submitted by 5:00pm PST Wednesday, March 8 th. We will confirm once it has been received and review any incorrect answers with you to ensure that you are fully prepared to perform your volunteer duties at the event. If we have not received your completed form by the due date you will not be able to volunteer on the Top Floor. To see the event experience from the participant perspective and get the full picture of your role, we recommend watching the following videos and paying close attention to the participants as they enter the finish line area:
