12 Social is Fundamental: Intro and : Context for GCSWI Spurring social progress is never automatic. Indeed, it requires enormous effort. Again we arrive at the core theme of Grand Challenges in Social Work: The social requires work. No other profession addresses social conditions and social innovations as directly as social work.

13 Examples that Demonstrate : that the Social is Fundamental Social isolation is a silent killer -- as dangerous to health as smoking. (House, 2001). Social Interactions Create Serious and Chronic Offenders (Fox, Perez, Cass, Baglivio, & Epps 2015). Discrimination Results in Health Disadvantages (Krieger, 2014). Exposure to IPV Shortens DNA Telomere Length and Shortens Life (Humphreys, Cooper, Lin, Blackburn, & Lee, 2012).
