2 CHIEF EXECUTIVE S MESSAGE Annual Report 2015/2016 HELLO Welcome to the Rock Trust s 2015/16 annual report. In many ways, the past year has seen the beginning of a transition for the Rock Trust - there has been a significant amount of work on strategic direction, quality improvement and staff training and support. Whilst the Rock Trust has maintained services for many years, we have, over the last couple of years, developed new services and made plans for growth to keep up with increasing demand. This year saw us put in place the framework required for this; our management and 2 development capacity was increased to enable us to develop new projects and grow successful projects which make the biggest impacts on the lives of those we serve. We realise now that the welfare reforms and economic environment we find ourselves in means that there are difficult times ahead and, whilst we will campaign to ensure that our young people s views and life stories are heard, we must also prepare for the change this will bring.
3 Being able to offer our young people affordable housing options - such as shared housing - has again become vital, giving them the opportunity to gain vital work and life skills. Developing services which involve the community and our increasing range of corporate partners will allow us to provide efficient services which will leave a legacy for all involved. Our employability work will rely on skilled tradespeople to provide the training, companies to provide the placements and our team to co-ordinate and support the young people. Our communities are providing the hosts and the flatmates for our housing options and the mentors for young people. From the beginning, our work has always been undertaken in partnership and that is what will ensure our future. Whilst we develop new services to meet these needs and fulfil these targets we also work with our partners across Scotland, UK and Europe to learn and share knowledge and practice which can help us all be more effective in our mission to End Youth Homelessness. We thank you all for supporting us as we continue to serve the vulnerable young people in our community so that they can avoid, resolve and move on from homelessness. Since 2014, total reserves have been reduced as part of Rock Trust s strategic plan meaning deficits have been recorded since then. The surplus in reserves, created before 2014, was invested in developing new projects and supporting ongoing projects so that we could continue to provide key services with reduced funding. These figures are summarised from the published accounts of the Rock Trust for the year ended 31 March Copies of the full accounts are available from the Rock Trust s office. The Rock Trust s auditor was Alexander Sloan, Chartered Accountants, Edinburgh. 8
9 INCOME Housing Support Rental Income Big Lottery Other grants and income Donations and legacies 390, , , , ,485 Total income for the year was 1,244,058, an increase of 181,278 compared to the previous year. The main increase in income is primarily due to the new funding agreed from the Big Lottery which had previously ended in 2014/15. Grants, Supporting People contract income and rental income remain the main sources of income for The Rock Trust. EXPENDITURE Staff costs Depreciation Office and Support costs Property costs Project, activities and other costs 935,890 25,008 95, ,623 76,280 Total expenditure was 1,383,984 (2014/15: 1.317,071) of which staff costs represents 68% at 935,890 (2014/15: 70% 925,446). 9
