December 2017 We would like to take a moment to thank I.D.A in Wasaga Beach for their generous donation to CSP. I.D.A was looking to make a donation to a local not for profit organization in town. We can not thank them enough for such a donation, it will definitely help CSP continue to provide services for the region. Volunteers provide great services We would like to take a moment to recognize both Sarah Davies and Bruce Enright their generous contributions to CSP, the knowledge and insight they have provided as well as the services they are offering our clients have been extremely beneficial. Sarah Davies has offered to provide our members with meditation, breathing exercise and other mindfulness practices. Bruce has volunteered his time to teach us the benefits of mindfulness breathing, mindfulnesss and Kundalini yoga.

2 November speaker series Pg 2 Our November speaker spoke on a number of topics including How to treat a Transgender individual, treating them the same as the gender they identify themselves with, calling them by their chosen name, using proper pronouns, if you know someone who is transgender, avoid telling others as it could put their lives in danger. The speaker also educated us on Gender Dysphoria, Gender Dyshoria is a psychological condition stemming from being transgender, it is a state distress, anxiety, depression and of self hatred caused by the brain structure not matching the body. The brain is in a constant state of confusion because it is hardwired for the opposite sex yet it has to perform functions necessary for the body it is in. The speaker spoke on numerous issues relating to the struggles that face each and everyday, and educated us on how we can better understand such struggles and how we might better understand and support. December Speaker Series Leah Simon Leah also spoke on responding to a Opiod overdose and the steps that she recommended. 1, Shaking the individual and shouting to alert them. 2, Calling 911 3, Providing chest compressions 4, Giving Naloxone 5, waiting on a response, and if in the case that the patient in not responding to administer another dosage. Leah also talked about what things to do if and when the individual should respond to the Naloxone. They may be waking up slowly, they may be disorientated, it may also be the case that they are going through withdrawal. They may also be combative and agitated. Leah also spoke on the goal of harm reduction Reducing transmissions of HIV, Hep B/C January Speaker Series Sue Hyland Sue Hyland sat down and spoke with us about her life journey. Some of the themes discussed on her journey included how events shaped her life as well as the world and people around her. -Sue talked about how she was born in a small prairie town, growing up with a sister and two siblings, she spoke about her father who was a Minister and a mother who was a academic. -Sue also talked about the difficulties of growing up with one parent who was a alcoholic and another who was a perfectionist. -Sue also talked about having to constantly move as a child and how not planting herself as a youth impacted her life as she got older. She never really felt life she had a place to call home. -Sue talked about how AA changed her way of thinking, learning to better care for herself. -Sue talked about learning that it was okay to make mistakes and learning to build her support network and understanding recovery better and celebrating the small victories. She also talked about her life in Australia, nursing, living on her own for the first time and many other topics as well.

3 Pg 3 A message from our Board of Directors Kathy Dudley Many people have asked me what does the Board do? Interest in nonprofit boards and how they work has grown substantially in recent years, and more and more people are embracing the opportunity to serve on a board. This is good news. But the trend has a challenging side to it, as well. The average person joining the governing board of a nonprofit organization typically has rather little knowledge or understanding of the work to be done by a board or what is expected of them once they join that board. In spite of all the talk about the importance of boards, we find that the majority of people serving on nonprofit boards actually have only a vague and general understanding of the fundamental roles and responsibilities of the board and the work of governance. So, what is it that I am really supposed to do as a member of this board? The uncertainty and confusion are understandable. We of the nonprofit sector have not done a good job of preparing people for their work on boards partly because every board seems to be a little (or a lot) different from any standard model, and partly because we are so busy that we don t feel that we can afford to take the time to be sure that we re all on the same page. We have become so busy doing the work that we don t take the time Board Chairperson Kathy Dudley to make sure that we understand the work! The lack of shared understanding is amplified by our discomfort with the uncertainty. A good share of the time, a board member with questions assumes that they re the only member of their board who is uncertain and yet, they re rarely alone in their uncertainty. What is governance? Governance is the process of providing strategic leadership to a nonprofit organization. It entails the functions of setting direction, making policy and strategy decisions, overseeing and monitoring organizational performance, and ensuring overall accountability, to support staff and management to ensure operations run smoothly and in accordance with our By Laws and our Policies and Procedures. Non profit governance refers to the process of providing leadership, direction, and accountability for a specific nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization. I look forward to serving on the Board as Chairperson for the next two years. Kathy Dudley Board Chair I came to CSP in 2009 to utilize their services, and many workshops to learn how to live with depression and anxiety, and how to manage it correctly. I joined the Board in 2011 as a director, In 2012 I assumed the role as Treasurer, and in 2013 I accepted the role of Chair, and I very much look forward to this exciting new year, and everything that it brings. 4 What s happening at Caring Supporting Participating Pg 4 Annual General Meeting and lunch Defeat Depression 2018 Dec 15th 2017 We recently held our Annual General meeting at Swiss Chalet, we took a few moments prior to lunch to discuss the year in review. -Kathy Dudley the board chair spoke to the members about various issues, concerns, changes and things were looking to expand in Some of the topics included - Kathy Dudley will continue as our Board Chairwomen in her first year 3rd term. - Mo Green will continue as our treasury secretary - Sylvie Simineau will continue as acting secretary in her second year of second term. - Scott Thomson will continue as a director in his second year of his first term. - Kristi Donald will continue as a director in her first term. - George Lazloffy has resigned from his position as Vice Chair person. - We are also looking to add more members to the board, but can t comment at this time, please stay tuned for more details. We are looking to get started on our 2018 edition of our defeat depression campaign. In 2017 we reached our goal of raising 10,000 dollars, were hoping to build on that success from last. We also are looking to make some changes to this years event, from community feedback. Were hoping that such changes will help to contribute to the 2018 walk in a positive manner. Others Topics of note. -Also announced at the AGM meeting was a pilot project beginning on Saturday January CSP. Under this pilot project the center will be open from 10 am 3 pm, there will be no groups held during this time on Saturdays, with the focus being more on activities such as cooking, games and other similar activities. -We are also looking to get started on 2018 Defeat Depression Campaign Jointly run with Mood disorders of Canadaheaded up by Sylvie Simineau, were hoping to build on last years success. Saturday Pilot Project at CSP Recently we held our annual general meeting, one of the topics discussed at the time was opening the center on weekends, So beginning in January the center will be open on weekend for a pilot project, to better determine if there is a need for services on the weekend. We at are looking to provide our members with a clubhouse vibe similar to what we provide in the mornings through out the week. We are looking to Cook, play games, do activities within the community. At the moment the decision to open on weekends is temporary, we are looking for interest from our members. The current Saturday hours at this time are 10:00 am 3:00pm.

5 Pg 5 Did you know? While it seems counterintuitive, Earth is actually closest to the sun in December, even though winter solstice is the shortest day of the year. Chester This past Christmas Chester had all sorts of adventures leading up to Christmas, Chester would like to take a few moments to thank everyone for their kind words of encouragement during his time at CSP. Chester learned a great deal about not only himself but others as well, he can not thank everyone enough for the valuable insight they provided him. Chester would like everyone to know that he will take everyone s advice and hopes to apply it to his own life in Chester would also like everyone to know that he was able to gather his courage and ask Trixie out on a date.
