5 It s a Great Time to be a Certified Community Health Worker! The Affordable Care Act (ACA): 1. Allows for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to provide grants for organizations to improve health in underserved areas through the use of CHWs* CDC works 24/7 to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. 2. Medicaid has increased access to preventive health care services and allows each state to designate CHWs to provide those services 3. Created funding for State Innovation Models which are costeffective ideas and programs that improve health care outcomes and quality and encourage the use of CHWs in these plans
6 Affordable Care Act (ACA) The ACA is a US law aimed at reforming the American health care system. Also referred to as ObamaCare, it s main focus is: Providing more Americans with access to affordable health insurance Improving the quality of health care and health insurance offered Regulating the health insurance industry Reducing health care spending in the US
7 Medicaid A social health care program for families and individuals with low income and limited resources. It is jointly funded by each state and the federal government, but managed by each state.
