WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS Selena welcomed the group and apologies were noted. A round of introductions took place from all present. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING The minutes were agreed as being a true and accurate recording of the previous meeting held on Friday 8 th January MATTERS ARISING Attachment Event It was discussed at a previous meeting to plan an event for April on attachment and possibly bringing Suzanne Zeedyk to deliver a morning session with parents and an afternoon session for practitioners. Selena obtained an Early Attachment DVD that will be shown at today s meeting. Selena provided information on an event Why People Need People that she recently attended and it was fantastic. Key messages during the training focused on early attachment. Selena thought it would be good to use this model and replicate Why People Need People in the Magherafelt area. Members agreed this would be a good idea. Selena will try and get this in the area and will extend an invite to Cookstown. It is hoped to have this planned for May/June Selena agreed to out when date is confirmed. ATTACHMENT DVD ACTION: Selena The Early Attachment DVD was shown and Selena noted a longer DVD has also been produced. Selena plans to move forward with purchasing copies of this DVD which will be available to members of the locality group as a shared resource to share with their staff teams. ACTION: Selena 2
JOYCE RAINEY EMPOWER PROJECT Joyce provided information on the Big Lottery Funded project which supports children under 12 who have Autism, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia, and operates in former Magherafelt and Antrim council areas. The project was launched on 1 st September 2015 with the lead partner being DADS. Other partners included in the project were highlighted. Joyce noted due to many partners being involved there is a lot of experience within the team. Since the Empower Project was established a number of courses and training workshops have been delivered with young people with Autism, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. Joyce provided information in detail of all programmes that took place. Some included a 5 week film making course aimed at year olds, Balanceability course ran over 6 Saturdays in Antrim & Crumlin with Autism Initiatives. This was run with different age groups: 4-6, 7-11 and an older age group. The course improved self-esteem and confidence of the young people who took part. Courses are also being delivered for parents and professionals including What is ASD, ASD & Girls and Behaviour Management. Other courses delivered include Comic Stripes, A Big Family Bake Off and ICT computer courses. A Learner Buddy Hub in After Schools Clubs has been set up with a model taken from DADS. This is being taken into 3 areas. Sensory Skills, Stress and Relaxation and Yoga will be running after Easter. Joyce noted parents have also been asking for help with referral processes. DADS have organised a meeting as part of their project to address this need. Joyce provided information on the Empower Project Facebook page. Upcoming courses will be uploaded to Facebook. A website is also being developed. There is also a dedicated information line for families which is manned by Josie. The number for this is UPDATE BELIEVE IN YOUTH The project is going really well in Cookstown and Magherafelt areas. Peer Educators are in Magherafelt Youth Club working with young people once a week. At the end of March peer educators will be doing outreach work. A 2 & 4 hour Alcohol Awareness training session has been developed and this is being offered out to Schools. It is hoped Schools come on board and avail of programmes. Peer Educators will be rolling this out. There are now 2 Community Champions in Magherafelt and 3 in Cookstown. Nar noted Peer Educators have completed a lot of training and are confident. 3
UPDATE FAMILY SUPPORT HUBS The funding for the family support hubs has been extended until September A further update will be given at the next meeting. ACTION PLAN REVIEW Selena noted the 3 outcomes remain the same and shared these as listed below. Outcome One Parents and Practitioners in Magherafelt will have a sound knowledge of the benefits of attachment Outcome Two Magherafelt will have a cohesive signposting and referral system Outcome Three Young People in Magherafelt have positive mental health and wellbeing Selena provided information on a Positive Mental Health event with Pastoral Care Teachers that the team previously run in Ballymena. A lot of relationships were built between organisations who attended and the Teachers present. Selena agreed to try and take this forward within the area. The Northern Obesity Partnership held an Obesity Conference in February looking at Body Image and programmes available. Selena noted she would like to progress this. A suggestion was made for Sandra to speak to young people. Challenges were shared regarding this as input is needed from School Nurses before any changes would be implemented. Sandra is to liaise with Sabrina regarding trying to take this forward. ACTION: Selena / Sandra MEMBER UPDATES Clare McKay NICMA Refresher training in Health & Safety and Safeguarding was completed in Magherafelt and Cookstown. Magherafelt buddy group did sensory play and will be doing Minding Me training. This was delivered in Causeway and feedback has been very positive. 4
Maxine McClean Network Personnel There are no changes and the service continues to run. Stress Management and Personal Development programmes have started to be delivered to parents. These will be OCN accredited training programmes. Maxine noted this is going well and leaflets were distributed with information on both. Steven Jarding Magherafelt Youth Club The Youth Club is open 4 evenings a week. This operates for different age groups: Junior group is on Tuesday and Friday nights, Intermediate group is a Monday night and Thursday nights are for the Senior group. Steven is back from Poland with a group of 25 young people. Everyone had a great trip with many activities completed during their time. Steven is progressing with Drugs and Alcohol courses being delivered in the youth club. Vicky Boland NHSCT Vicky noted the NHSCT are moving to a Emotional Health & wellbeing Service and shifting to more preventative services. There is restructuring taken place. Fedeilme McShane - Start360 Connection Service This is a signposting service and looks at what already exists in order to signpost appropriately. The service will be running networking events for organisations to come together to find out what services are in their area. Each month a campaign is completed to highlight certain health risks March is looking at Medicine Misuse. Legal Highs will be the theme for April and making people aware of key messages. Fedeilme provided information on the Lifeskills service and noted the service has capacity for 8 week programmes for year olds. The Hidden Harm Team are working with young people with parents who have been affected by alcohol misuse. Information was given on the Daisy project also. There was an event held in January in Ballymena looking at Drugs and Alcohol issues and Start360 wants to replicate in this area. Ken McDermott PSNI Ken stated if anyone would like engagement from PSNI locally to get in touch. Ken will be able to coordinate officers to attend groups/programmes etc. 5
Christine O Toole Mid Ulster Women s Aid Mid Ulster Women s Aid will be advertising for a Service Coordinator post as it is currently vacant. This will be a full time post. Information was provided on a programme starting in February and will continue into March Gerry Lynch DADS Gerry noted DADS are looking at ways of being more inclusive at a lower cost. The programme is good but very expensive. Hannah Dearie - PHA The next phase of the Obesity campaign was launched on Monday. Examples were given of the campaign. It was noted the PHA is going through changes with voluntary exits and this will have an impact on the work. ANY OTHER BUSINESS Smoothie Bike The Smoothie bike is available as a resource if anyone would like to use for events etc. Steven noted that this is currently being well used. DATE AND TIME OF NEXT MEETING It was agreed that the next meeting would take place on Friday 6 th May 2016 at 10.00am in Northern Regional College, Magherafelt Campus. 6
