Carried out preliminary investigations identifying An. funestus as the primary malaria vector species and An. gambiae s.s as the secondary vector in Nchelenge; as well as studying their feeding habits and insecticide resistance status. Conducted a pilot study on gene flow between the An. gambiae s.s. populations in northern Zambia. Trained visiting scientists from Ndola, Zambia in entomological laboratory techniques. Recruited and trained the epidemiology/entomology field team for the Nchelenge, Zambia, and Mutasa, Zimbabwe study sites. Used molecular diagnostics to screen ticks for pathogens including Borrelia species, Rickettsia species, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Ehrlichia chaffeensis, and Babesia microti, as part of a collaboration with the Fairfax, Virginia Health Department. Norris 2 Conducted integrated field and laboratory research to determine the efficacy of insecticidetreated bed nets (ITNs) against the local vector mosquito populations in a rural area of Southern Zambia Characterized the insecticide susceptibility status and mechanisms of insecticide resistance in the mosquito vectors Anopheles arabiensis and Culex quinquefasciatus Characterized the effects of ITN introduction on Anopheles arabiensis feeding behavior and finescale heterogeneity in malaria risk Constructed a molecular phylogeny of anopheline mosquitoes of southern Africa Managed an 8-12 person field team and organized and carried out mosquito collections Reared mosquitoes in an insectary for laboratory bioassays Developed novel PCR-based diagnostic assays for malaria detection and insecticide-resistance target site mutations Cooperated with the Zambian Ministry of Health, National Malaria Control Council, and Malaria Institute at Macha, assisted the Choma District Health Department in epidemiological investigations of malaria outbreaks Statistically analyzed large data sets using STATA MMI Dept., Johns Hopkins School of Public Health Ph.D. Lab rotation November 2006 February 2007 Research advisor: Dr. Clive Shiff Conducted behavioral assays for chemical compounds as mosquito attractants for Anopheles stephensi and Anopheles gambiae. Southern Africa International Center of Excellence in Malaria Research Nchelenge, Zambia October 2011 and March 2012 Recruited and trained a 7-person joint entomology/epidemiology field team for a long-term observational malaria epidemiology project. Met with the local chief, headmen, representatives of the District Health Office and Rural Health Clinics to introduce the project and obtain their permission to work in the community. Organized community mobilization meetings to explain the project to residents of the selected catchment areas. Initiated field collections for epidemiological and entomological samples.
