2 EPD Definitions EPD s are calculated by the National Cattle Evaluation program to best provide linear unbiased predictions of genetic merit. CED: Calving Ease Direct A number that predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first calf heifers higher numbers indicate greater calving-ease. BW: Birth Weight, WW: Weaning Weight & YW: Yearling Weight All are expressed in pounds, this shows the expected number of pounds a bull or female will add or subtract from their progeny s birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight respectively. MK: Milk: expressed in pounds of weaning weight that a female will add/subtract or that a bull s daughters will have. TM: Total Maternal - expresses the combination of what a sire transmits to his daughters in the form of genetics for growth and genetics for milking ability. Or that same trait directly applied to a female and expressed in pounds. CEM: Calving Ease Maternal: this EPD predicts how well an animal s daughters will calve with a higher number being easier calving. HP: Heifer Pregnancy: predicts the probability that a bull s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percentage. PG30: 30-month Pregnancy: predicts the probability that a bull s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as a first-calf heifer, expressed as a percent. ST: Stayability: Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. DMI: Dry Matter Intake: Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative or lesser value is more favorable. YG: Yield Grade: predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score in the finished animal and is expressed in Yield Grade units. A lower YG value is more favorable. The YG EPD is calculated based on CW, REA and FAT EPDs. CW: Carcass Weight: expressed in pounds of carcass weight adjusted to a constant fat endpoint. REA: Rib Eye Area: expressed in square inches of rib eye muscle area adjusted to a constant fat endpoint. MB: Marbling: expressed in degrees of marbling score, a determinant of USDA Quality Grade. Value is adjusted to a constant fat endpoint. $Cow: Represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. FPI: Feeder Profit : An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. EPI: Efficiency Profit : An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. Breeding Guarantee: All bulls have passed a breeding soundness exam performed by Dr. Erick Knock based on the following criteria: Scrotal circumference and testicle examination Pelvic palpation to check for any abnormalities or medical problem in reproductive glands Electro-ejaculation is used to collect semen and exam penis for breeding soundness Microscopic evaluation of semen for motility and concentration. All bulls are guaranteed breeders for the first breeding season (defined as the ability to settle an average number of healthy cows during the first breeding season) Breeding season is defined by 90 days after turnout. If problem should occur, Adkins Gelbvieh must be notified immediately. We will replace the bull if possible or the buyer will receive a credit (not to exceed the purchase price of the animal), minus salvage value, towards a purchase in next years sale. We do not cover injury or neglect or death (that is what insurance is for). Females are Guaranteed to breed in the first breeding season as described above. Warranty as described above.
