The main hernial content was omental fat which was reduced. The hernioplasty was performed by placing a prolene mesh to obliterate the defect. The follow up study for four months revealed uncomplicated recovery of the case. Keywords: Hernioplasty, Prolene mesh, Omental fat INTRODUCTION Hernial is an abnormal protrusion of an organ or tissue through a normal body opening. Umbilical hernial in dogs are more common in males than females (Parks, 1981; and Waters et al., 1993). An umbilical hernial is generally not a serious hernial as it mainly consists of fatty tissue, rarely viscera (Figure 1). This report describes an umbilical hernioplasty with prolene mesh in a German shepherd pup. MATERIALS AND METHODS The case has been presented in the Jabalpur pet hospital, Jabalpur (MP). The Prolene mesh (Ethicon) 15 cm 15 cm has been used for hernioplasty. A German Shepherd male pup aged about 3 months and weighing approximately 5 kg was brought for the treatment of a fluctuating swelling at the umbilicus which increased in size gradually to attain tennis ball size in a month. Clinical examination revealed the case as an umbilical hernial. The case was surgically treated with aseptic preparation of the site and premedication with Atropine 0.04 mg/kg I/M and Xylazine 1.5 mg/kg I/M. The general anaesthesia was maintained by Ketamine 8-10 mg/kg I/V. Dog was restrained on dorsal recumbancy and a longitudinal incision was given at the mid of the swelling and deepened by blunt dissection towards the base. A rent was observed at the umbilicus with protrusion of omental fat in the sac. The adhesions were freed off and the hernial content was reduced. The hernial ring was freshened. The routine dressing with Povidonemetronidazole lotion, antibiotic coverage and fluid therapy given for 5 days made an uneventful recovery of the case (Figure 7). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Congenital umbilical hernial in dogs is more common in males than females (Fossum et al., 2002). CONCLUSION In a German shepherd pup prolene mesh umbilical hernioplasty provided uneventful recovery and postoperative observation of eight months did not revealed recur rence of condition.

If muscle weakness or loss of muscle occur in long standing cases porcine intestinal submucosa or prolene mesh can be used (Ettinger and Feldmann, 2005). CONCLUSION In a German shepherd pup prolene mesh umbilical hernioplasty provided uneventful recovery and postoperative observation of eight months did not revealed recur rence of condition.
