2 Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month Ovarian cancer is the most deadly of all the gynecologic cancers. If detected early and treated properly, survival rates can increase to more than 90 percent, according to the American Cancer Society. Symptoms of ovarian cancer are often subtle and hard to diagnose; however, there are four main symptoms associated with the disease: Bloating Pelvic or Abdominal pain Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly Urinary urgency or frequency Other symptoms can include nausea, indigestion, gas, constipation or diarrhea, extreme fatigue, shortness of breath and backaches. Diagnosis Your doctor may order the following tests: Physical examination- Your doctor will palpate your stomach to look for discomfort, tenderness or abnormal fluid Pelvic examination Blood Test - A specific blood tests which may indicate ovarian cancer or other conditions Ultrasound Biopsy Risk Factors Family history of breast or ovarian cancer Personal history of cancer Women over the age of 55 Women who were never pregnant Women on menopausal hormone replacement therapy To make an appointment with a gynecologist at West Jefferson Medical Center, call E.C. Labadie, MD WJMC Obstetrics/Gynecology
3 National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and is a leading cause of cancer death in men, second only to lung cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America, affecting 1 in 6 men. Last year, nearly 240,000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, and more than 33,000 men died from the disease, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Currently, one new case occurs every 2.2 minutes and a man dies from prostate cancer every 15.6 minutes. Symptoms Not everyone experiences symptoms of prostate cancer. Many times, signs of prostate cancer are first detected by a doctor during a routine check-up. Some men, however, will experience changes in urinary or sexual function that might indicate the presence of prostate cancer. These symptoms include: A need to urinate frequently, especially at night Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine Weak or interrupted flow of urine Painful or burning urination Difficulty in having an erection Painful ejaculation Blood in urine or semen Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs Consult with your doctor if you experience any of the symptoms above. It is estimated that there are more than 2 million American men currently living with prostate cancer. Staying informed with the latest news on prevention and screening is an important step in reducing your risk of developing prostate cancer. And, should a diagnosis occur, access to current, in-depth treatment information can help you find the best care. For more information visit: www. pcf.org. To check on your prostate health, make an appointment with the West Jefferson Urology Specialist by calling or go to our website wjmc.org/urologyspecialists. 5 MEET SWAMP PEOPLE WEST JEFF FAMILY FESTIVAL OCTOBER 20 AUTOGRAPHS 6 PM TO 9 PM LIZ Liz from Swamp People Shares Her Love of Gator Hunting There aren t many lady gator hunters in South Louisiana. But I am proud to say I am one of them. I was always in the marsh, south of Houma, with my parents. My mother was in the boat a lot, and she was always preparing gator meat once the gators were skinned and cleaned. She was a hard-working woman that taught me how to be just like her. She was and still is an angel. My father taught me the ways of the land; how to hunt and live off the land. I enjoy doing gator hunting and would not miss it for nothing. It is in my blood. Mom and Dad are both passed on now, but I know they are always with me when I am out there in the marsh. Liz History Channel s Swamp People
