1 Men s Health Men are living longer healthier lives, but they can be safer, stronger and healthier by taking daily steps to prevent disease and injury. Improving men s health starts at home with individuals and families taking steps to live safer and healthier lives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has compiled a list of the Top 3 Health Risks for Men: 1. Heart disease is a leading men s health threat. The CDC recommends taking charge of your heart health by making healthier lifestyle choices. Don t just avoid smoking but try to avoid second hand smoke. When choosing a healthy diet, eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, high fiber foods and lean sources of protein, such as fish. Limit foods that are high in fat and sodium. 2. Cancer. Various types of cancer are of particular concern to men including skin cancer, prostate cancer and colorectal cancer. Again, drinking and smoking, a bad diet and obesity are considered contributing factors. When you re outdoors, cover up and use plenty of sunscreen and take early detection seriously. Consult your doctor for regular cancer screenings. 3. Accidents. Motorcycle or car crashes are the leading cause of fatal accidents among men according to the CDC. To stay safe on the road, use common sense, wear your seat belt, follow the speed limit, don t drive under the influence of any mind altering substances and don t drive while drowsy. In general, the CDC advises that men stop smoking, increase physical activity, reduce excess weight, reduce stress and use moderation when consuming alcohol and make healthy lifestyle choices. West Jefferson is hosting a Men s Health Day with FREE Health screenings on Thursday, June 19 beginning at 5pm at the Oakwood West Jeff Fitness Center, 175 Hector Ave., Gretna. RSVP for this event is required. Call or go to wjmc.org/menshealth. To find a primary health doctor, call The Family Doctors at Jimmie Holmes, MD Primary Care Physician - The Family Doctors

4 Tree of Life Unveiled at WJMC Cancer Center Recently, donors, officials and guests gathered for the unveiling of the Tree of Life donor wall of the Cancer Center at West Jefferson Medical Center. Parish President John Young with Hospital Foundation President Karen Ward revealed the new donor recognition display to more than 100 guests for the unveiling. Medical Oncologist Nagarajan Chandrasekaran, M.D. ( Dr. Sekar ) spoke during the Tree of Life unveiling. He thanked donors for their tremendous help and expressed the continued need for assistance to support the Cancer Center, its patients and their loved ones in the future. Located in the Infusion Center and named the Tree of Life, the donor recognition wall is more than 10 feet wide and 10 feet tall. It is comprised of a stained-wood wall plaque with a life-sized brass tree. Branches hold gold, silver and bronze leaves suitable for engraving names of donors. More than 60 contributors and special recognitions are already named on the Tree of Life. Contributions of $250 or more to the Cancer Center at WJMC will be recognized on the Tree of Life. Donations can also be made to honor someone. Large brass stones under the Tree of Life and brass acorns are also available to major donor s. Major donors acknowle d g e d w i t h stones include: Base Logistics, Humana, Creative Hang Ups, Budget Saver Groceries, Crescent River Pilots Foundation, Boomtown Casino, Laurel Outdoor and Brazeale, Sachse & Wilson, LLP. The brass acorn recognizes the WJMC Fish Fry Team led by the Maintenance and Engineering Department which raised thousands of dollars for the Cancer Center. WJ Festival teams are also recognized on the tree. The Tree of Life can add individual and business contributors at various levels of contribution well into the future. To learn more about the Tree of Life or to arrange seeing the tree, please contact the Hospital Foundation office at Jennifer Steel, Executive Director WJ Hospital Foundation
