1 Program Overview High School Curriculum
2 Teaching to the State Standards LifeSouth strives to bring awareness of the opportunities available to save another s life. By teaching school age children about the science behind these lifesaving donations, we hope to create a Donation Generation. Imagine a world where there is enough blood and there are no wait lists for organs, tissue, and precious stem cells from marrow and cord blood. In addition, LifeSouth established an affiliate foundation, Five Points of Life Foundation, to further advocate and raises awareness about donation. By focusing on the life sciences curriculum, LifeSouth s I am the Donation Generation program is able to teach students the following: The function of blood in our bodies How blood is replenished The function and tasks of organs and organ systems What happens when life sources don t properly function Resources available to help others in need These concepts are all presented in alignment with what is being taught in the classroom regarding our bodies and how they work. The benefits of this program in your classroom include the hands-on activities used to teach the kids about blood and the organs in the body. These activities supplement what is already being taught in the classroom and aid in the child s knowledge and retention of this material. Please take the time to review the standards addressed for your state and feel free to contact Brite Whitaker at bbwhitaker@lifesouth.org with any questions regarding the curriculum. Five Points of Life Foundation, Inc.,
3 Alabama State Standards LifeSouth s I am the Donation Generation Education Program focuses on the four components of blood and how they function in the body, bone marrow and cord blood as a source of replenishment for the four components of blood and the function of organs and organ systems in our body. This content meets objectives taught in Human Anatomy and Physiology classrooms. The High School Science Standards addressed in LifeSouth s I am the Donation Generation Program are: 2015 Alabama Course of Study: Science Curriculum Guide to the Alabama Course of Study: Science Content Standard: Human Anatomy and Physiology, Objectives: HAP.1.1, HAP.1.2, HAP.1.3, HAP.1.4, HAP.1.5, HAP.3.1, HAP.3.2, HAP.7.6 Sources: Curriculum Guide to the Alabama Course of Study: Science Grades K-12, urriculum%20guide.pdf 2015 Alabama Course of Study: Science 15.pdf Five Points of Life Foundation, Inc.,

Lay out the A, B, AB and O cups in front of the class in a line. Put the remaining 4 cups behind each of the labeled cups. 4. Tell students that the blood type A will be the color red. Drop 4 drops of red food coloring in the A labeled cup and the cup behind the A labeled cup. Swirl around to mix. 5. Tell the students that the blood type B will be blue. Drop 4 drops of blue food coloring in the B labeled cup and the cup behind the B labeled cup. Swirl around to mix. 6. Tell the students that the blood type AB will be the color purple. Drop 4 drops of red food coloring and 4 drops of blue to make the purple color. A (red) and B (blue) make purple. 7. Tell students that blood type O will stay clear. The students challenge - What color (or blood type) can mix without changing color? The experiment: Type A 1. Hold up red food coloring cup in back of labeled A red food coloring cup and ask: Can red mix with red and not change the color? Yes 2. Pour a little of the red liquid into the red blood type A liquid and ask: Five Points of Life Foundation, Inc.,
