Metric Measurement The standard unit of length is the. The standard unit of mass is the. The standard unit of volume is the. Converting Using Prefixes: kilo hecto deca base deci centi milli km hm dam m dm cm mm kg hg dag g dg cg mg kl hl dal L dl cl ml 1
Example 1 Fill in the blanks. a) km = m b) mm = km c) L = ml d) 12 L = ml e) 5 g = kg f) 1.7 g = mg g) 17.5 cm = m h) 0.12 kg = g 2
Example 2 Consider a square that has an area of 1 m 2. Fill in the blanks by first converting length and width to the new unit of measure. 1 m cm mm 1 m cm mm a) 1 m 2 = cm 2 b) 1 m 2 = mm 2 3
Imperial Measurement The imperial measurement system is based on British units. 4

Length: 12 in = 1 ft 1 yd = 3 ft 1 mi = 1760 yd = 5280 ft Inch comes from the Latin word uncia which means one twelfth. The CUBIT (18 in) is likely the oldest unit of length in history. It is the distance from the middle finger to the elbow. The Egyptians used it to build the pyramids! 1 yard A YARD is 3 feet which is double the length of a cubit. At one time a yard was defined as the distance from the tip of the nose to the thumb with the arm stretched out. 6
A MILE is 5,280 feet. The word mile comes from the Latin phrase, mille passus, which means 1,000 paces. (A pace is two steps.) 1 mile Verrazano Narrows Bridge 7
Volume: 1 tbsp = 3 tsp 1 fl oz = 2 tbsp 1 c = 8 fl oz = 16 tbsp 1 pt = 2 c = 16 fl oz 1 qt = 2 pt = 4 c 1 gal = 4 qt 8
Mass: 1 lb = 16 oz 1 ton = 2000 lbs Pound is abbreviated lb as it came from the Latin phrase libra pondo. Did you know? A soccer ball must weigh between 14 and 16 ounces. A large buffalo weighs about a ton. The word ton comes from tun, which is a cask or wooden barrel used for holding and shipping wine in large quantities 256 gallons, which would weigh (approximately) lbs. 9
To convert from one unit to another, we multiply by a conversion factor. 10
Example 1 Convert each measure to pints and to quarts. a) 32 fl oz b) 24 c Length: 12 in = 1 ft 1 yd = 3 ft 1 mi = 1760 yd = 5280 ft Volume: 1 tbsp = 3 tsp 1 fl oz = 2 tbsp 1 c = 8 fl oz = 16 tbsp 1 pt = 2 c = 16 fl oz 1 qt = 2 pt = 4 c 1 gal = 4 qt Mass: 1 lb = 16 oz 1 ton = 2000 lbs Example 2 Convert each measure to gallons. a) 64 qt b) 104 c 11
Example 3 Convert each measure to fluid ounces. a) 5 qt b) 3 gal Length: 12 in = 1 ft 1 yd = 3 ft 1 mi = 1760 yd = 5280 ft Volume: 1 tbsp = 3 tsp 1 fl oz = 2 tbsp 1 c = 8 fl oz = 16 tbsp 1 pt = 2 c = 16 fl oz 1 qt = 2 pt = 4 c 1 gal = 4 qt Mass: 1 lb = 16 oz 1 ton = 2000 lbs Example 4 Convert each measure to pounds. a) 32 oz b) 456 oz 12
Example 5 Convert each measure to ounces. a) 3 lb b) 5.6 lb Length: 12 in = 1 ft 1 yd = 3 ft 1 mi = 1760 yd = 5280 ft Volume: 1 tbsp = 3 tsp 1 fl oz = 2 tbsp 1 c = 8 fl oz = 16 tbsp 1 pt = 2 c = 16 fl oz 1 qt = 2 pt = 4 c 1 gal = 4 qt Mass: 1 lb = 16 oz 1 ton = 2000 lbs Example 6 Convert each measure to yards. a) 72 ft b) 5.2 mi 13
Example 7 Steve owns a restaurant in Arizona. He bought a 55 gal drum of ketchup at a wholesale store. For the tables, he has half pint squeeze bottles that he fills with ketchup from the drum. How many bottles can Steve fill from this drum of ketchup? Volume: 1 tbsp = 3 tsp 1 fl oz = 2 tbsp 1 c = 8 fl oz = 16 tbsp 1 pt = 2 c = 16 fl oz 1 qt = 2 pt = 4 c 1 gal = 4 qt 14
Example 8 Calculate the cost, including taxes, to carpet a 12 ft by 17 ft room given that the carpet costs $24 per square yard. Length: 12 in = 1 ft 1 yd = 3 ft 1 mi = 1760 yd = 5280 ft 15
