1 Smart Snacks School Compliant Food Guidelines

2 Applicability Smart Snack Guidelines must be adhered to in the: O A la carte in the cafeteria O Student Stores O Snack Bars O Vending Machines O All Other Venues

3 Competitive Foods O Definition of Competitive food: All food and beverages sold to students on the School Campus during the School Day, other than those meals reimbursable under the Federal lunch programs. * Basically any food items that are not sold via the school cafeterias are considered Competitive, as they compete with the meal programs.

4 The entire School Campus must adhere to these Guidelines. O Definition of School Campus: All areas of the property under the jurisdiction of the school that are accessible to students during the school day. (Does not include Teacher s Lounge)

5 The entire School Day must adhere to these Guidelines. O Definition of School Day: School day is the period of time from midnight to 30 minutes after the end of the official school day.

6 Items sold on Campus (not in the cafeteria) will always be labeled as a SNACK. When using the Smart Snacks Product Calculator, be sure to check Snack in order to correctly tabulate the Compliancy of each item.

7 To see if your food items are Compliant and may be sold or served, the following hurdles must be met:

8 General Standard for All Foods (Hurdle #1) Any Food sold in schools must have as its first labeled ingredient: O Fruit or Vegetable; OR O Dairy or Protein Food; OR O Whole Grain

9 Total Fat (Hurdle #2) O <35% of total calories from fat per item as packaged/served Saturated Fat <10% / Trans Fat = zero (<.05 g) O Exemptions include: O Reduced fat cheese O Part-skim mozzarella O Seafood with no added fat O Nuts and seeds and nut/seed butters O Dried fruit with nuts and/or seeds (no added sweeteners or fat)

10 Calculating Total Fat It is very important that the product s total fat percentage is not confused the %DV (Daily Value). The 9% DV of Fat shown on this nutrition label is not the percentage of Calories derived from Fat.

11 Calculating Total Fat To figure out the % of total fat derived from the item s calories, you are going to need to do some calculating. We need to know: Calories from Fat / Total Calories 50 / 180 = 28%

12 Sodium (Hurdle #3) O Snack and side items: <200 mg sodium per item

13 Calories (Hurdle #4) O Snack and side items: <200 calories

14 Total Sugars (Hurdle #5) O <35% of weight from total sugars per item.

15 Computing the Total Sugar Weight Bar = 48 g Sugars = 13 g We need to know Sugar Weight / Item 13 g / 48 g = 27% This item is <35% total sugar weight.

16 Sugar Exemptions O Dried/dehydrated fruits or vegetables (no nutritive sweeteners or fat) with or without nuts/seeds. O Dried fruits with nutritive sweeteners for processing and/or palatability (ie: dried cranberries, tart cherries, blueberries) O The proposed sugar exemption for yogurt has been removed; though most meet the <35% of weight requirement.

17 Fruit & Veg Exemptions The following are exempt from meeting all nutrient standards: O Fresh, frozen and canned fruit packed in water, 100% juice, light or extra light syrup. O Fresh, frozen and canned vegetables with no added ingredients except water. O Canned vegetables with small amount of sugar for processing purposes.

18 Accompaniments O Condiments must be included in the nutrient profile as a part of the item served. O Examples: ~ Sugar/sugar substitute ~ Creamers or Milk ~ Garnishes, etc.

19 Servings Per Container Be on the lookout for Nutrition Labels that show more than 1 (one) Servings Per Package or Container. Any numbers calculated will need to be multiplied by the number of servings listed.

20 Thirsty? School Beverages have new Guidelines also...

21 Beverages - Water No restrictions of any kind on: O Plain water, ~ carbonated or noncarbonated O No size limit

22 Beverages - Milk O Unflavored nonfat and low fat milk. O Flavored nonfat milk O Maximum serving size: 12 fluid oz. for High Schools 12 fluid oz. for Junior Highs 8 fluid oz. for Elementary

23 Beverages - Juice O 100% fruit and/or vegetable juice O 100% juice diluted with water ~ no added sweeteners ~ carbonated or noncarbonated O Maximum serving size: 12 fluid oz. for High Schools 12 fluid oz. for Junior Highs 8 fluid oz. for Elementary

24 Beverages / Calorie-free O Calorie-free flavored water ~ with or without carbonation O Other Calorie-free beverages ~ < than 5 calories / 8 fluid oz. ~ or up to 10 calories / 20 fluid oz. O Maximum serving size: 20 fluid oz. for High Schools No allowances for Junior Highs No allowances for Elementary

25 Beverages / Lower-calorie O Up to 60 calories per 12 fluid oz. O Up to 40 calories per 8 fluid oz. O Maximum serving size: 12 fluid oz/60 cals for High Schools - or 8 fluid oz/40 cals for High Schools No allowances for Junior Highs No allowances for Elementary

26 Caffeine O No Caffeine Restrictions in High Schools O Maximum serving size: 20 fluid oz. for High Schools

27 Fundraisers ELEMENTARY: O If the fundraiser food items meet the regulatory standards, those items may be sold on the school campus during the school day. O If the fundraiser items do not meet the Smart Snack Guidelines, those items must be sold after hours and/or offcampus.

28 Fundraisers JUNIOR HIGH: O If the fundraiser food items meet the regulatory standards, those items may be sold on the school campus during the school day. O If the fundraiser items do not meet the Smart Snack Guidelines, those items must be sold after hours and/or offcampus. Some exceptions may be made for an occasional club event. Speak with your Student Activities Specialist for more details.

29 Fundraisers HIGH SCHOOLS: O If the fundraiser food items meet the regulatory standards, those items may be sold on the school campus during the school day. O If the fundraiser items do not meet the Smart Snack Guidelines, those items must be cleared for sale via the approval of Student Council and the fulfillment of the Monkey Survey. Non-compliant fundraiser sales must be an occasional, and non-repetitive club activity. Speak with your Student Activities Specialist for more detailed information.

30 Food Brought From Home O USDA has no role in regulating foods brought from home. The new standards only affects foods that are sold and served on the school campus during the school day. Class or Club Activities (non school-wide functions) may also comply. Speak with your Student Activities Specialist for more details.

31 Monitoring & Compliance O Arizona Department of Education will monitor compliance with the standards as part of ADE s administrative review process of the Child Nutrition Program.
