The phosphorus comes from mono-ammonia phosphate. 50% of its potassium comes from sulphur (low-salt content). Turf benefits: The Pre-Winter Fertilizer is the best product to obtain a turf that has maximum resistance to winter conditions and fast recovery in spring. A pre-winter formula containing one of the best NPK ratios and choice of inputs in the industry. The perfect combination of ammonium sulphate and potassium works together to form an adequate reserve of carbohydrates in your turf to increase survival in winter. The use in fairways and the roughs requiring high level of fertilization in phosphorus and potassium rapidly stimulates root growth and enables them to better endure stress such as drought, frost and diseases. The phosphorus works together with the potassium to stimulate the growth of new roots at the end of the season. The phosphorus, provided by Pre-Winter , applied in autumn, is much better placed for distribution in the soil at springtime because of the action of freezing and unfreezing. It is preferable not to apply the phosphorus when the soil is frozen because this practice will generate losses as a result of runoff that will contaminate the surface water. The strong content of potassium sulphate in our fertilizer minimizes leaching and the potential of burning. The sulphur stimulates the absorption of nitrogen. mineral fertilizers Environmental note: It is better not to apply the phosphorus on a frozen soil as this action will create losses by runoff that will contaminate the surface water. 5

Turf benefits: The combination of varied-release nitrogen (FMS) acts in synergy in order to provide constant release. This gradual release of nitrogen ensures a uniform growth of the foliage that is more dense and prolonged, as well as its greening. The controlled availability of nitrogen (FMS) in our fertilizer not only improves the efficient absorption of nitrogen but also increases the uptake level of phosphorus and potassium. The supply of phosphorus and potassium in this fertilizer works towards a fast growth of strong, dense and deep roots. It provides young plants with the necessary resistance against drough, foot traffic, diseases and frost. The sulphate and potassium minimize leaching and the potential of burning. In this fertilizer, calcium and magnesium provided by Pro Lime lime contribute to maintain an optimum ph level. In periods of water stress (July / August), the available calcium in the soil decreases. The addition of calcium in our fertilizer enables a better availability and thus contributes to harden the cell walls of the plant producing a strong and healthy grass. The magnesium contained in our fertilizer maximizes the absorption of phosphorus. The calcium, magnesium, sulphur and iron accentuate the greening of the turf while ensuring its healthy and optimal growth. The sulphur stimulates the absorption of nitrogen as a result of the synergy of the 2 elements. mineral fertilizers Poly Plus (PPSCU) is a revolutionary molecule which allow stability under all conditions. 20 Nobody knows turf like Lesco As the leader in the professional green industry, we ve dedicated forty-plus years to turf agronomics the science of growing turfgrass. Along the way, we ve developed effective fertilizer products and techniques to give you green, healthy turf that looks good and stands up to stress. Our granular fertilizers fall into three distinct groups: slow-release polymer-coated urea (SCU) fertilizer in a variety of formulations. a high-performance blend of Poly Plus sulfur-coated urea and our homogeneous NOVEX fertilizer. a homogeneous particle fertilizer that provides optimum slow release nutrients to the turf. The nutrients in the fertilizer are made accessible to the plant through a number of natural actions that break down the particles. This break down is known as the release mechanism of the fertilizer. The methods include: Microbial Action naturally occurring micro-organisms act to break down fertilizer elements into more basic compounds, which allows the plant to absorb them. Temperature soil temperature affects the activity of micro-organisms which break down nutrient sources; cold temperatures mean less activity and less breakdown. Osmosis the tendency of the elements Microbial Action Osmosis Hydrolysis Physical Breakdown to pass through any outer coating into the soil; this eventually equalizes the concentration of nutrients between the fertilizer particle and the soil. Hydrolysis in this chemical reaction, water breaks down the compounds making up the fertilizer particle. Physical Breakdown caused by handling the particle, mowing, foot traffic and other sources of stress. Feast zone Lesco zone Famine zone Once you have the right nutrients provided in turf fertilizer, the next problem is extending the release of those nutrients over time. Without some control over the release mechanism, you wind up with feast-or-famine feeding. The LESCO Fertilizer Zone It s much better to even out the release of nutrients, and the resulting growth patterns of the turf. Our fertilizers and application advice create a program that does just that, resulting in green, healthy, vigorous turf all season long, and year after year. Poly Plus works through a patented polymer and sulfur coating on the urea particles to slow the release of nitrogen. Our NOVEX smart fertilizer, on the other hand, works with a homogeneous particle, composed of slower-release nitrogen nutrient sources and other premium nutrients. Our third, cost-effective option, called PolyVex, blends the ultimate slow release of NOVEX with the coated technology of Poly Plus. 20

21 Poly Plus fertilizer technology LESCO pioneered the development of sulfur-coated urea, and is the largest manufacturer of it in the world. This is our patented Poly Plus sulfur-coated urea. Sulfur-coated urea like Poly Plus has become the most widely used controlledrelease nitrogen source in professional turf care. Our Poly Plus fertilizers offer you a number of advantages: 1. Controlled release maintains consistent growth habit and reduces mowing frequency and clippings; 2. A controlled and more uniform release maximizes nutrient uptake efficiency and minimizes fertilizer loss due to leaching an volatilization; 3. Harder, more durable coating resists breakage during handling and application; 4. Free-flowing product is easier to handle and apply; 5. Ideal for both turf and landscape ornamentals; 6. Available blended with control products; 7. Available as coated urea, coated potassium sulfate or coated diamonium phosphate; 8. Prevents turf damage during hot, humid conditions as found with using all soluble fertilizers such as urea and ammonium sulfate. How works The urea particles in Poly Plus, which break down to provide nitrogen nutrients, are coated with sulfur and a special polymer compound. These coatings slow down the release mechanism and even out the feeding and growth cycle of the turf. The Typical Growth Response graph shows just how well Poly Plus works compared to uncoated urea. Typical Growth Response Poly Plus fertilizers are available in a variety of formulations for new installations, established turf, different seasons and climates, different turfgrass varieties, and blended with weed and pest control products. Approximate Relative Particle Coverage Poly Plus comes in Standard, Mini and Elite particle sizes. Our Standard grade gives you cost-effective application for areas mowed above 1.5. The Mini grade increases fertilizer coverage and improves pesticide combination product performance. And the Elite product maximizes particle density on premium quality turf, such as golf course greens. 21

22 NOVEX NOVEX fertilizer takes a whole different approach to extending fertilizer release and providing long-term feeding of turf. The first breakthrough comes from controlling the chemistry of the nitrogen nutrient sources. The second is our ability to produce one homogeneous fertilizer particle, instead of a blend of different particles. 1. Homogeneous particles that provide even, consistent, slow release nutrition. 2. Optimum metered release of N-P-K and other micronutrients to the turf. 3. No damaging surge growth. 4. Very low burn potential. 5. Dense, hard particles that resist mower pick-up and breakage. 6. Available in a variety of formulations for different needs and conditions. NOVEX gives you these advantages: Out with the bad; in with the good Our researchers discovered that typical urea formaldehyde fertilizers contain four sources of nitrogen nutrients. Two of these chemical substances are undesirable sources of nutrients for turf. The two bad sources include: Unreacted Urea Highly water-soluble nitrogen that provides a quick surge of growth and then disappears; HWIN Hot Water Insoluble Nitrogen, and it can take a year or more to break down and release its nutrients to the turf. The other two nitrogen sources fall between these extremes, and provide the key to a quality nutrient management program. They include: WSCRN Water Soluble Controlled Release Nitrogen; HWSN Hot Water Soluble Nitrogen. Through the unique NOVEX manufacturing process, we control the chemical reaction, reduce the two undesirable sources of nitrogen, urea and HWIN, and increase the good sources, WSCRN and HWSN. 22 NOVEX has more of the good stuff The bar graph to the right shows how NOVEX contains more of the good stuff controlled-release nitrogen compared to other leading fertilizers. The result is a LESCO exclusive urea formaldehyde fertilizer. NOVEX has enough quick-release nitrogen to provide an initial response and green-up, but without damaging surge growth, and with minimal burn potential. Then the high proportion of controlled-release nitrogen takes over, providing an even, long-term feeding and growth pattern. NOVEX contains very little of the bad stuff, HWIN, in comparison to other formaldehyde fertilizers on the market.

23 POLYVEX NOVEX not only has unique chemistry, but a unique particle. Most fertilizers blend many different particles in the bag, which contain different nutrients. But NOVEX provides all the nutrients, in their proper proportion, in each particle. So each individual NOVEX granule is a homogeneous, multi-course meal for turf. The NOVEX particles are especially small and dense. They provide optimum coverage on turf, and resist being picked up by mowers. They re also compact and hard enough to maintain their structure during handling and application. You get outstanding spread ability and consistency, as well as the ultimate in slow-release nutrition for turf. : the perfect blend Our PolyVex fertilizer gives you the best of both worlds. It combines patented NOVEX long-release chemistry with proven Poly Plus sulfur-coated urea technology for turf, shrubs and flowers. PolyVex provides a longer nitrogen release cycle than SCU particles alone, plus a higher percentage of WSCRN and HWSN nutrients than comparable fertilizer products. PolyVex gives you several important advantages: 1. Metered nitrogen release stimulates even, extended turf feeding. 2. Uniform turf growth over time means less mowing, reduced thatch build up and reduced pest problems. 3. Predictable nitrogen release, even in stress periods, through a variety of release mechanisms. 4. Uniformly blended components maximizes ease of handling, spreadability and coverage. 5. More-for-less patented technologies provide more nutrient to the plant with less loss through leaching and volatilization. 6. Controlled release prevents luxury nitrogen consumption and unwanted vertical surge growth. 7. Low salt index reduces the risk of burn, even in adverse conditions. 8. Available in a variety of Standard and Mini analyses. Consult your LESCO professional for the formulation that best suits your needs. How PolyVex works The first component of PolyVex is our patented Poly Plus SCU product known the world over as the most dependable sulfur-coated urea. Its primary mode of release is through mechanical breakdown of the outer sulfur coating, initiated by moisture. Poly Plus delivers up to 16 weeks of even nitrogen feeding. The second component is NOVEX. Since it s introduction, NOVEX has completely changed turf managers expectations of controlled release fertilizers, and gained rapid acceptance in the golf and athletic field industries. NOVEX s primary mode of release is through microbial degradation. These microbes flourish under the same conditions in which turf plants thrive, so the nitrogen in NOVEX is released when the plant needs it the most. Combining these two fertilizer technologies gives you a tool that raises the bar on turfgrass standards. PolyVex provides efficient controlled-release, plus the industry s most predictable release curve under a broad array of environmental conditions. It s engineered to promote healthy turf plants through balanced leaf, root, and shoot development. 23

Follow these suggestions for a greener and healthier grass: In the absence of a soil analysis, here are two recommendations for applying Pro Lime: For new grass with no soil analysis, apply approximately kg of Pro Lime to 304 m 2 ( lbs to 1000 ft 2 ) For existing grass with no soil analysis, apply approximately kg to 304 m 2 (40-80 lbs to 1000 ft 2 ) On neutral soil, an annual application of 10 lbs to 1000 square feet will help maintaining the neutrality of the soil. Even if Pro Lime product may be applied at any time of the year, it is preferable to select a period when rain can stimulate the penetration of Pro Lime into the soil or apply it after soil aeration. Soil analysis is essential for precise recommendations. With Pro Lime, lime requirements will not be multiplied by 1.25 to obtain the level of recommendation at a depth of 17 cm in mineral soil and a depth of 20 cm in organic soil. Obtain an analysis from a laboratory specialized in this field. FERTILEC works together with Les Laboratoires A & L to enable you to obtain the best results for your soil. The benefits of acidity control with Pro Lime: Most of the biological and chemical procedures that take place during the turf growth are influenced by the acidity of the soil. As the ph is under 6, most essential elements are less available to the plant. When faced with this situation little does it matter what quantity of fertilizer is used, the grass does not respond to the applications. The reduction in microbial activity generates the formation of thatch that prevents nutrition elements and water from reaching the roots. Pro Lime will bring the soil ph to recommended balance. The fertilizer will become more efficient; your grass will become a darker and a more striking green, typical of a healthy grass. See table at page 50. Improves the structure of the soil and the availability of nutrients. Releases the nutrients to the plant. Improves the availability of nitrogen and phosphorus. Reduces the formation of thatch. Provides an important supply of calcium and magnesium. Enables healthy growth of the plant. The calcium (21%) is used by the plant as an important component of the cell wall, and this increases resistance to diseases and stress, also improving plant stability. The calcium plays a primary role in the production of proteins. The magnesium (12%) is essential as an activator and a catalyst in the enzyme production. The magnesium is the only mineral involved in the formation of molecules of chlorophyll. For a greener and healthier grass request Pro Lime quality 26

28 The hidden foundation of Healty Turf What causes turf problems To solve turf problems on your course, it s important to understand how soil itself can impact the issue. Let s examine the causes of common problems in sand-based root zones, along with the ideal soil composition. ideal soil Ideal soil contains 50% solid and 50% pore space. 30 Solving common problems Profile TM Porous Ceramic in the ground: Product applications A C F B D 15% Profile / 85% sand 15% peat / 85% sand 100% sand ground enriching agents These plugs were taken from FarmLinks Golf Course putting green after one year and four months. The green was constructed in thirds and compared root zones of 15% Profile / 85% sand (left plug), 15% peat / 85% sand (center plug) and 100% sand (right plug). The greens grass is an A-1 and A-4 bentgrass blend. The following outlines how to utilize PPC to solve problems associated with poor root development, as indicated by letters on the photo above. SITUATION A: Localized dry spot Localized dry spots are not a problem after incorporating a 50% Profile / 50% sand blend into these areas. I have significantly reduced hand watering. Perry Payne, CGCS Tobacco Road Golf Club, North Carolina SITUATION B: Poor Drainage & Oxygen in the Root Zone The use of Profile Porous Ceramic in our greens has allowed us to successfully implement a deep watering program on a 4-5 day interval. This program works because we are holding adequate moisture without sacrificing drainage. Immediately after deep watering, our greens are firm and show no signs of localized dry spots between cycles. John O Connor The Bay Club, Mattapoisett, MA Solution: PPC Why: By incorporating Profile Porous Ceramic (PPC) into the hydrophobic areas, you add a permanent moisture-holding reservoir to these areas. Profile does this without having a negative impact on drainage. How to Use: 1. Most hydrophobic areas (hot spots) occur in the same location year after year. Identify and map out these areas. 2. Double-aerify with at least 1 / 2 " tines penetrating 3 1 / 2 " deep. 3. For optimum results, carefully backfill the holes with 100% Profile TM. This requires approximately.25 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet or 250 lbs. of Profile TM per 1,000 square feet. A 50% Profile TM / 50% sand blend can provide effective results using 125 lbs. of Profile per 1,000 square feet blended with an equal volume of sand (approximately 350 lbs.). 4. After backfilling the aeration holes, it is important to immediately water to reach field capacity. Solution: PPC Why: When incorporated into poorly draining soils, Profile Porous Ceramic adds pore space (both capillary and non-capillary). Because of its low bulk density and high percentage of pore space (74%), Profile dramatically improves the downward movement of water, which results in oxygen being pulled into the root zone. How to Use: 1. If determined that deep drilling is necessary, a drill and fill operation at a depth of 8" to 10" will require approximately 250 lbs. of Profile Porous Ceramic per 1,000 square feet. 2. If the problem is more at the surface, aerate to a depth that penetrates the problem layer and carefully backfill the aeration holes. The rate will vary depending on the depth but typically it will require.25 to.35 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet or 250 to 350 lbs. of Profile per 1,000 square feet or 125 to 175 lbs. of Profile TM blended with an equal volume of sand (approximately 350 to 525 lbs.). 3. After backfilling the aeration holes, it is important to immediately water to reach field capacity. 3030

31 SITUATION C: Organic Buildup Solution: PPC Why: A naturally occurring process in aging greens is the buildup of organic material in the top 4" 6" of the root zone mix. An excessive buildup of organics can have many associated problems such as hydrophobic areas that become very difficult to wet or areas that retain too much moisture and become soggy, shallow rooted and weak. How to Use: 1. Remove as much of the organic buildup as possible by aeration to a depth that penetrates the organic layer. This may require multiple aerations, (three if possible), in one season. 2. For optimum results, carefully backfill the holes with 100% Profile TM. This requires approximately.25 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet or 250 lbs of Profile TM per 1,000 square feet. A 50% Profile TM / 50% sand blend can provide effective results using 125 lbs of Profile TM per 1,000 square feet blended with an equal volume of sand (approximately 350 lbs.). 3. After backfilling the aeration holes, it is important to immediately water to reach field capacity. SITUATION D: POOR Nutrient Retention Solution: PPC Why: Many greens are constructed with very little or no amendment and do not have the ability to hold nutrients. Profile Porous Ceramic has a high Cation Exchange Capacity and when incorporated into sand based root zones, provides exchange sites for desirable nutrients such as K, Fe, Mg and Ca. The nutrients are held at the exchange site and are available to the plant for uptake. How to Use: 1. Incorporation of Profile Porous Ceramic into the top 3" 4" of the green will dramatically improve nutrient retention in the primary root zone area and help to eliminate the on again, off again color swings that occur between fertilizer applications. 2. Aerate with 1 / 2 " tines on 2" centers penetrating 3 1 / 2 " 4". Multiple aerations in one season will achieve faster results. 3. For optimum results, carefully backfill the holes with 100% Profile. This requires approximately.25 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet or 250 lbs. of Profile TM per 1,000 square feet. A 50% Profile TM / 50% sand blend can provide effective results using 125 lbs. of Profile TM per 1,000 square feet blended with an equal volume of sand (approximately 350 lbs.). 4. After backfilling the aeration holes, it is important to immediately water to reach field capacity. SITUATION E: Ice Removal Solution: PPC Why: When Profile TM is applied to the surface of snow or ice, it begins to absorb water and turns dark in color. The water absorption helps pit and melt the ice for easier removal. It becomes a good topdressing for greens without adding additional nutrients. How to Use: 1. Apply Profile TM at a rate of 50 lbs. per 1,000 square feet on the surface. 2. Depending on the amount of sunshine and temperature, you will see the ice start to pit and melt. 3. The ice will reach a point where you can either remove the pitted ice areas or let it continue to melt until the ice is gone. 4. Reapply if a new coating of ice covers the layer of Profile. SITUATION F: Algae Control Solution: PPC Why: Frequent light topdressings of Profile Porous Ceramic draw moisture out of the algae, preventing them from thriving. How to Use: 1. Apply Profile TM at a rate of 50 lbs per 1,000 square feet on the surface. 2. Reapply every days if needed. 31

34 The COMPLETE solution Ferti-Organic uses a patented technology to manufacture a truly homogenous product. Each particle is identical under analysis and in appearance with little smell or powder. organic fertilizers Each time we watch a movie, we often judge its value only by the performance of its stars. Sometimes we give credit to the supporting actors, the producer and director for their contribution. Rarely, however, do we consider the hundreds of individuals that play a minor role that contributes towards the success of the movie: the make-up artist that improves the appearance of the actor, the drivers that bring them to work on time, even those who deliver the meals so that the actors may perform at their best. The value of these workers is generally not recognized until they are away from work and things no longer turn out as they are supposed to. With lawn maintenance, history repeats itself. The micronutrients are our unsung heroes, they assist in making things work, and ensure that the stars (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) glitter in all their glory. The micronutrients are among the 16 essential elements required for maximum plant growth and their reproduction. They assist in almost all functions of the plants and any deficiency in the soil can result in a less effective use of water and of the primary elements for plants. While the demands of each one of the micronutrients is minimal, there are dangers if there is an excess. That is why COMPLETE for lawns and landscaping contains a small quantity of micronutrients in order to temporarily correct any deficiency in the soil and improve the efficiency in the application of the fertilizer. COMPLETE products, guaranteed confidence. COMPLETE is an homogenous mix of primary and secondary elements, combined with organicbase granules that contain humus, algae extract and vitamins. These products are recognized as providing the most complete range of nutrients to your lawn without stimulating fast growth. 34

35 Energy from organic matters Ferti-Organic Products All the advantages without any disadvantage Within this category of alternative fertilizers, we were the pioneers in combining the benefits of a soil enriched with organic elements and a moderate quantity of synthetic nitrogen in order to ensure fast greening. The result is a fertilizer that is superior to any other product. Ferti-Organic products offer you the best possible selection for performance and unequalled value. With COMPLETE, we extended our concept to include all the necessary nutrients and elements for a better absolute agronomic approach when it comes to fertilizer applications for grass and landscaping. The ingredients contained in Ferti-Organic COMPLETE products work jointly to ensure that all the nutritional requirements of the plant are met. A balanced supply is available directly from the fertilizer used and the organic matter of the product helps in forming an active soil system that allows the release of additional necessary nutrients in a natural wayover time. Why is organic matter so important? «The organic and nitrogen contents of the soil must always be maintained at the highest possible level and at an affordable cost.» --The Nature and Properties of Soils, 8th edition, Brady Page 163, Chapter 6:18, Regulation of Soil Organic Matter This quote from Brady shows us the importance of incorporating organic matter in all our lawn maintenance programs. It also highlights the advantages Ferti-Organic products offer their clients, the patented granulating technology. This technology allows the Fertilec company to offer organic fertilizers of a very high quality. It also allows you to add fresh food to your soil and nutritive elements to your grass. For lawns, add 750 to lbs / acre (17 to 23 lbs / 1000 sq. ft.) of organic matter annually using Ferti-Organic products, it is appropriate and would be beneficial for microbial activity on the surface of the soil. This fresh addition of organic matter represents between 50-70% of all organic matter in this dynamic lawn environment. These percentages are even greater in all types of soil that have not had organic matter added to them on a regular basis. organic fertilizers 35

36 The incomparable nitrogen fusion The maximum efficiency rate of absorption of nutriments Our Ferti-Organic products combine the nitrogen release curves in the form of: 1 - Ammonium sulphate (1 week) 2 - Urea (2 weeks) 3 - Feather meal and blood (4 weeks) 4 - Wheat (6 weeks) 5 - Methylene urea (21 weeks) organic fertilizers «... Where a continuous supply of nitrogen is required to maintain growth, recover from stress and maintain a bright colour, a combination of different sources of nitrogen is the best solution.» Article by Richard L. Duble, Ph. D. Professor of Agriculture at Texas A&M University Featured in Golf Course Management, March 1999, page 67 Plants are consumers of nitrogen and refuse to take other elements such as phosphorus or potassium when there is an excess of nitrogen. The controlled availability of nitrogen in Ferti-Organic products improves not only the effective absorption of nitrogen but also increases the levels of consumption of phosphorus and potassium. If the slow-release of nitrogen constitutes a requirement for your nitrogen applications, a true organic product with high content of carbon also supplies energy and nutrition to the soil as does slow-release nutriment. The synthetic sources of slow-release nitrogen supply the unique dimension of a slow-release nutriment. COMPLETE for lawns and landscaping is your best choice for consistent results at an affordable price. How to minimize leaching of elements such as nitrogen? Ferti-Organic products are designed to release nutriments more slowly even in a humid soil. This is made possible by maintaining high levels of insoluble nitrogen in our products. The insoluble nitrogen contained in Ferti-Organic products can be obtained by microbial activity in the soil and growth in plants, both influenced by soil temperature: if the growth of the plant slows, the release of nitrogen slows also, thus minimizing waste of nitrogen. The effective use of nitrogen keeps the nitrates in the area of the roots, increasing savings in the use of fertilizer. Therefore, the user of fertilizers does not spend resources and efforts to apply nutrients that are leached or unused. 36

37 Optimum carbon / nitrogen ratios C / N Ratio for composting If you compost using environmental waste, follow the same basic ratio of C / N (carbon / nitrogen) than that which you use for lawn and plants. In order to encourage regular decomposition and making of compost, the ratio of carbon and of nitrogen must be balanced. Place layers of cut grass rich in nitrogen alternatively with sources weak in nitrogen but rich in carbon such as falling leaves. If the plants cannot tell the difference between natural and synthetic nitrogen why should you worry? Both feed the plant and provide a source of food that will give vigour to colours and growth. But for soil, made of millions of living micro-organisms; there is a great difference because of the presence of carbon. Carbon is the base chemical element of all living species and a requirement for all animal and vegetable life. In the soil, there must be an appropriate ratio with nitrogen to maximize the soil functions and encourage fertility. If there is too much carbon in the soil as organic matter, the bacteria will attach to nitrogen and attempt to break down the molecules. Plants that grow in this type of soil will therefore show very little growth and faded colours. If the level of nitrogen is too high, the micro-organisms will have an intense level of activity, exhausting the carbon and causing seed growth and soil conditions that will be poor over time. Nitrogen may be the main requirement of the plant but if we look at nitrogen form the point of view of the plant, carbon is the ideal element. The relation between these two elements is technically known as the carbon to nitrogen ratio (or C / N). Agronomists strive to find an exact balance for the plant. Too much carbon can reduce the available nitrogen to the plant, while too much nitrogen can exhaust carbon in the soil. COMPLETE feeds these micro-organisms with organic matter rich in carbon and also supplies nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as micronutrients. The synthetic nitrogen portion stimulates microbial activity without endangering the populations of the soil with unnecessary high levels of nitrogen. Inorganic nitrogen stimulates microbial populations as well as plants and when this is applied to good soil, it can have a synergetic effect with the organic matter which increases the general efficiency of the nitrogen. With appropriate levels of carbon and bacteria populations, fast-release of nitrogen such as urea and the ammonium sulphate can be converted into a more stable form that will not leach. organic fertilizers Sustained during a long period of time by organic matter, these organisms can continue to do their work by maintaining the humidity in the soil, by retaining nutriments and the minerals in the root zone, aerating the soil, transforming fertilizers nutriments in particles that are highly available. Unfortunately and all too often, the response to these problems is a chemical application that only provides a short term solution. The strategy for a good soil must rather be an effective long term approach. 37

38 POMAR, the revolutionary program Preferred Organic Matter Annual Requirement Favor an organic matter input throughout the year The key to a healthy lawn resistant to diseases and drought. Each application of Ferti-Organic programs contributes to maintain optimum quantities of organic matters and nitrogen in the soil at affordable prices. The POMAR programs are available for the maintenance of golf courses (greens, tees and fairways), residential lawns, parks, and sports ground in order to maintain ideal conditions both on the surface and in the root zone. organic fertilizers The approach to provide organic matter and nitrogen is as direct as the addition of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus by traditional synthetic programs. In fact, the worries of the fertilizer industry diverted our attention from the most elementary principle in agronomy: the need to add organic matter to surface soil. The attention given to this principle will reduce our dependence upon high fertilization programs and pesticides that have less and less advantages. Become a knowledgeable person in carbon and organic nitrogen ratios. Place the carbon and the organic matter at the top of your list of priorities with an annual application higher in fertilizers that have high organic-base content. The addition of fertility conditioners, soil conditioners and products for pest insect control are reduced to the level of supplements. The lawn develops well when micro-organisms have good source of nutrients, especially when this is accompanied by a root zone that is well supplied in oxygen. Put emphasis upon soil life and its physical characteristics. The carbon / nitrogen ratio could be described as a roller coaster with each addition of organic matters. Without these additions, the roller coaster would keep rolling downwards until the nitrogen uptakes become restrained. It is preferable to add organic matter throughout the year rather than a large quantity only once. This highlights the advantages of our line of Ferti-Organic products. The fluctuating nature of carbon / nitrogen is better controlled with organic-base fertilizers with a great range of carbon / nitrogen ratios. A new approach for lawn fertilization. Ask your Fertilec representative for your POMAR program. Programs based on POMAR Places all organic programs in the same field of activity so that comparisons may be made. Carbon serves as a results measurement element. Consider carbon and nitrogen as interrelated. Supplies energy more effectively than any other fertilizers. Different claims are made by competitors but the benefits are very weak when comparing the energy POMAR programs. All Ferti-Organic products of Fertilec are physically superior as a result of our patented granulating technology (Homogenous granulation). 38

44 Available sizes: litres. Neem Oil and extracts NEEM OIL Margosa (Neem) (Melia Azadirach L.) International Research Reference liquid fertilizers Oil and extracts currently sold in Canada as leaf gloss. The insecticide, medicinal and dietary properties of Neem make it almost a sacred tree to which people form India have devoted a true cult for many centuries. Neem oil is used in India and has multiple functions, for example in pesticides, as an insect repellent, soap, cosmetics, antiseptic, toothpaste, balm, poultice, lubricant, shampoo (louses and ticks), cream and to treat digestive problems. Neem extracts constitute a group of 7 substances that are closely related, including azadirachtine, approved in the U.S and some European countries as phytosanitary products in biological agriculture. The main components are: oleic acid, stearic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, myristic acid, a source of vegetable azadirachtine. The list of insects controlled by Neem includes some 300 species. It is not one of those insecticides that kills its targets on contact, ingestion or vapour. The active ingredients in Neem interfere at various levels on the pest: 1. As a repulsing agent (anti-feedant). The azadiracthine may have a systemic action with absorption and a very fast translocation in plants. 2. As an inhibitor of the reproductive system, larva development and hatching of eggs. 3. Interferes with moulting (Growth hormone). How to Use Cold-pressed Neem oil is an oily liquid that congeals at below 20 o Celsius. The solidified oil is liquefied when gently warmed. Add a teaspoon of liquid soap to the oil as an emulsifier before putting into hot water or at room temperature. Dose: for the extract, simply mix 2.5 to 5 ml per litre of water and for oil, depending on the nozzle used, mix 5 to 10 ml per litre of water and vaporize until the vegetation overflows. If necessary, repeat after one week. Detailed information on web site: 44
