The first breakthrough comes from controlling the chemistry of the nitrogen nutrient sources. Two of these chemical substances are undesirable sources of nutrients for turf. The two bad sources include: Unreacted Urea Highly water-soluble nitrogen that provides a quick surge of growth and then disappears; HWIN Hot Water Insoluble Nitrogen, and it can take a year or more to break down and release its nutrients to the turf. The other two nitrogen sources fall between these extremes, and provide the key to a quality nutrient management program. The rate will vary depending on the depth but typically it will require.25 to.35 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet or 250 to 350 lbs. of Profile per 1,000 square feet or 125 to 175 lbs. of Profile TM blended with an equal volume of sand (approximately 350 to 525 lbs.). 3. 31 SITUATION C: Organic Buildup Solution: PPC Why: A naturally occurring process in aging greens is the buildup of organic material in the top 4" 6" of the root zone mix. An excessive buildup of organics can have many associated problems such as hydrophobic areas that become very difficult to wet or areas that retain too much moisture and become soggy, shallow rooted and weak. How to Use: 1. Remove as much of the organic buildup as possible by aeration to a depth that penetrates the organic layer. This may require multiple aerations, (three if possible), in one season. 2. For optimum results, carefully backfill the holes with 100% Profile TM. This requires approximately.25 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet or 250 lbs of Profile TM per 1,000 square feet. SITUATION D: POOR Nutrient Retention Solution: PPC Why: Many greens are constructed with very little or no amendment and do not have the ability to hold nutrients. The water absorption helps pit and melt the ice for easier removal. It becomes a good topdressing for greens without adding additional nutrients. How to Use: 1. Apply Profile TM at a rate of 50 lbs. per 1,000 square feet on the surface. 2. Depending on the amount of sunshine and temperature, you will see the ice start to pit and melt. 3. The ice will reach a point where you can either remove the pitted ice areas or let it continue to melt until the ice is gone. 4. Reapply if a new coating of ice covers the layer of Profile. SITUATION F: Algae Control Solution: PPC Why: Frequent light topdressings of Profile Porous Ceramic draw moisture out of the algae, preventing them from thriving. How to Use: 1. 37 Optimum carbon / nitrogen ratios C / N Ratio for composting If you compost using environmental waste, follow the same basic ratio of C / N (carbon / nitrogen) than that which you use for lawn and plants. In order to encourage regular decomposition and making of compost, the ratio of carbon and of nitrogen must be balanced. Place layers of cut grass rich in nitrogen alternatively with sources weak in nitrogen but rich in carbon such as falling leaves. If the plants cannot tell the difference between natural and synthetic nitrogen why should you worry? Both feed the plant and provide a source of food that will give vigour to colours and growth. But for soil, made of millions of living micro-organisms; there is a great difference because of the presence of carbon. Carbon is the base chemical element of all living species and a requirement for all animal and vegetable life. In the soil, there must be an appropriate ratio with nitrogen to maximize the soil functions and encourage fertility. If there is too much carbon in the soil as organic matter, the bacteria will attach to nitrogen and attempt to break down the molecules. Plants that grow in this type of soil will therefore show very little growth and faded colours. If the level of nitrogen is too high, the micro-organisms will have an intense level of activity, exhausting the carbon and causing seed growth and soil conditions that will be poor over time. Nitrogen may be the main requirement of the plant but if we look at nitrogen form the point of view of the plant, carbon is the ideal element. The relation between these two elements is technically known as the carbon to nitrogen ratio (or C / N). Agronomists strive to find an exact balance for the plant. Too much carbon can reduce the available nitrogen to the plant, while too much nitrogen can exhaust carbon in the soil. The insecticide, medicinal and dietary properties of Neem make it almost a sacred tree to which people form India have devoted a true cult for many centuries.
