Stakeholder preferred ways to reduce production diseases in broiler chickens and layer hens Philip Jones*, Jarkko Niemi** and Richard Tranter* * Centre for Agricultural Strategy, University of Reading, UK ** Economics and Society, Natural Resources Institute, Finland This project has received funding from the European Union s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no

The context of the stakeholder consultation Undertaken as part of EU PROHEALTH project WP 7 examined costs of pig and poultry production diseases and costs & benefits of interventions to control them Methodology 1. Systematic literature review to assess economic impact of production diseases. Identified 9 poultry production diseases based on availability of economic/physical parameter impacts data 2. Stakeholder consultation in 5 EU countries. 3. Bio-economic modelling 2

The goal of the stakeholder consultation Validate the outcomes of the systematic literature review Does the review: Capture the most important production diseases? Correctly estimate disease costs? Correctly estimate efficacy and cost of interventions? Identify preferred interventions to control individual diseases Identify preferred interventions to control multiple diseases 3

Stakeholder consultation methodology Over 350 stakeholders contacted in 5 EU countries in early producers, plus upstream and downstream stakeholders. Outputs of literature review shown to stakeholders. disease costs costs and benefit of control interventions 45 complete responses obtained response rate from Germany and Poland was low. 4

The stakeholders

Preferred interventions to control multiple diseases (poultry and pigs) 16

Preferred interventions to control multiple diseases (poultry and pigs) 17

Additional findings Commonality between countries (standardised production systems) Major emphasis on prevention measures (rather than cures) Many preferred measures common to multiple diseases Commonality between interventions for pigs and poultry The most useful overall interventions were improving: biosecurity; ventilation; and litter quality. 18

Validation of the literature review Strengths Captures diseases of most economic concern Estimated disease costs considered reasonably accurate Most efficacious intervention usually in the top two preferred by stakeholders Weaknesses Some stakeholders thought disease impacts were too high. Studies seldom reported economic impacts Poor coverage of some commercially useful interventions Multi-functional interventions rarely studied (esp. preventive) Reliable enough to inform policymakers & research scientists More research needed into - measures to control multiple diseases 19

Thank you for your attention Philip Jones Centre for Agricultural Strategy School of Agriculture, Policy & Development University of Reading, UK This project has received funding from the European Union s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no
