Foreword 0.1 Ready to eat food for people with malnutrition is a Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) and is used for treatment of severe acute malnutrition. It is suitable for people suffering from severe acute malnutrition or moderate acute malnutrition from age of 6 months. 0.2 Development of this Tanzania standard was necessitated by the need to ensure the safety and quality of ready to eat food for people with malnutrition being produced and or marketed in Tanzania. 0.3 In reporting the result of a test or analysis made in accordance with this standard, if the final value observed or calculated, is to be rounded off, it shall be done in accordance with TZS 4 (See clause 2). 1.0 Scope This Tanzania standard specifies requirements, methods of test and sampling for ready to eat food for people with severe and moderate acute malnutrition from age of 6 months. 2.0 References For the purpose of this Tanzania standard the following references shall apply: 1. TZS 1501:2012 Fruits and Vegetables Determination of Mercury Content Flameless Atomic Absorption Method 3.0 Terminology For the purpose of this standard the following definition shall apply:- 3.1 Ready to eat food for people with malnutrition- is a Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) which is used for treatment of severe and moderate acute malnutrition. 3.2 Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) is a high energy food contained in a concentrated form, enriched with minerals and vitamins to replenish a severely malnourished people. The food does not need cooking, or any other process before feeding. 3.3 Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is defined by a very low weight for height (below -3z scores of the median WHO growth standards), by visible severe wasting, or by the presence of nutritional oedema. 3.4 Moderate acute malnutrition (MAM), also known as wasting is defined by a weight for height indicator between -3 and -2 z-scores (standard deviations) of the international standard or by a mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) between 11 cm and 12.5 cm. 3

5 5.0 Hygiene 5.1 The product shall be prepared under hygienic conditions according to TZS 184 and TZS 109 (see clause 2). 5.2 The product shall not contain microbiological count more than the limit given in Table 3 below: Table 3: Microbiological limits Micro-organism Yeast and Moulds cfu/g Limit 10 2 Method of test TZS 131:2006 E. 6 7.0 Packaging, marking and labeling 7.1 Packaging The product shall be packed in suitable, hygienic, food grade and environmental friendly packaging materials which protect the nutritional quality and safety of the product as well as environment. The suitable packaging material shall be able to protect the product from light, oxygen, moisture and carbondioxide. 7.2 Marking and labeling The product shall be marked and labeled in accordance with TZS 538(see clause 2). In labeling Kiswahili or Kiswahili and English shall be used. In addition each Container/packet of product shall be legibly and indelibly marked with the following information: a) Name of the food b) Complete list of ingredients c) Net content d) Name, physical and postal address of the manufacturer. e) Country of origin f) Date of manufacture and expiry g) Brand name of the product h) Storage condition i) Instructions for use j) Batch or code number k) Statement THE PRODUCT IS SUITABLE FOR PEOPLE WITH SEVERE AND ACUTE MALNUTRITION from the age of six months shall appear on the label. l) Way of disposal packaging material m) Nutritional information The containers may also be marked with the TBS Standards Mark of Quality. NOTE: The TBS Standards Mark of Quality may be used by the manufacturers only under licence from TBS. Particulars of conditions under which the licences are granted, may be obtained from TBS. 6
