In order to assure this quality, estlé Health Science products carry an expiration date. The expiration date is the date up to which the product maintains its quality as well as the nutrient content declared on the label. The product should not be consumed after the expiration date has passed. The expiration date is bilingual and is indicated by EXP followed by the date in a 4 digit year, abbreviated 2 digit month, and 2 digit day format. The following are the Canadian bilingual month abbreviations used for estlé expiration date coding. January: JA February: FE March: MR STORAGE April: AL May: MA June: J July: JL August: AU September: SE October: OC ovember: O December: DE The following instructions are regarded as generally applicable to all estlé Health Science products in this guide. However, for product-specific instructions always refer to the label. LIQUID FORMULA: To maintain product quality, store unopened package at room temperature (max. 25 C). Avoid freezing or storage at high temperatures. Once the Tetra Pak formula is opened, portion into an appropriate serving/feeding container and use immediately. Tightly cover package and refrigerate any unused portion. Discard opened-refrigerated formula within the time stated on the label. Hang time of spiked 1 L or 1.5 L Ultrapak liquid formulas is 48 hours at room temperature. It is not necessary to store the spiked Ultrapaks in the fridge between intermittent feeds. In order not to compromise product quality and safety, refrigeration temperature must be between 2-4 C. POWDERED FORMULA: Store powdered products in a cool, dry place and protect from moisture. For multi-serve/bulk packages; once opened, use within the time stated on the label. HAG TIME GEERAL GUIDELIES Clean handling techniques must be employed in the preparation of all feedings. These include having clean, appropriate work areas; adequate clean and/or sterilized equipment; and minimal handling and manipulation of formulas during preparation and use. Any contamination during preparation or delivery reduces the hang time of the formula. Re-use of feeding containers and delivery sets increases the likelihood of contamination. CLOSED SSTEM - ULTRAPAK WITH SPIKERIGHT PLUS PORT The UltraPak with SpikeRight PLUS enteral closed system is a pre-filled, commercially sterile, non-air dependent container that may hang for up to 48 hours once spiked with an appropriate administration set. OPE SSTEM - POWDERS OR TETRA PAK COTAIERS An open system encompasses reconstituted powders or ready-to-use liquids decanted from a preparation container or original packaging into a feeding container. The A.S.P.E.. Enteral utrition Practice Recommendations* provide the following hang time recommendations: For reconstituted powdered formula or a formula with additives, a 4-hour hang time is recommended For commercially sterile, liquid formulas decanted from a carton, an 8-hour hang time is recommended These hang time recommendations assume the formula is kept at room temperature and is subject to minimal handling and manipulation. The microbial safety of all tube feeding formulas is dependent on clean handling and administrative techniques. While literature states a wide range of actual hang time recommendations, most agree that administration sets and bags used in an open system should be changed every 24 hours. 55 GOOD TO KOW LACTOSE Lactose is a disaccharide sugar (galactose and glucose) that is found in milk. Although Health Canada does not have a specific, quantified limit for lactose-free, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) uses the guideline: Lactose-free means that there is no detectable lactose in the food using an acceptable laboratory method. estlé adheres to this guideline. Due to great variation in individual lactose tolerances, a single threshold of lactose for all lactose intolerant people has not been determined. Symptoms of lactose intolerance have been described after intakes of less than 6 g per serving in some people, while the vast majority of lactose maldigesters can tolerate up to 12 g of lactose as a single dose with no or minor symptoms 1. Where low levels of lactose are detected in estlé Health Science oral and enteral products, a statement of <0.5 g lactose per serving or <0.5 g lactose per 100 ml is made. All estlé Health Science products have been tested to validate if they are lactose-free. Information in this guide is current at the time of printing. GLUTE Gluten is a protein composite (of gliadin and glutenin) found in wheat and related grain species, including but not limited to; barley, rye, oats, spelt, durum, kamut, emmer and triticale. Health Canada views gluten-free products to contain less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of incidental gluten. All estlé Health Science products have been tested to validate if they are gluten-free.
