3 PROGRAM GOALS To reduce childhood obesity risk factors for 5 th graders in Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, Los Alamos County by: Increasing nutrition knowledge Increasing fruit and vegetable intake Increasing activity level
4 JBI Program The JBI program contains basic elements to reduce the risks of obesity for children. providing nutrition education students, teachers and parents teaching nutritious food choices promoting appropriate decision making goal setting appropriate serving sizes increasing physical exercise time promoting regular physical activity
5 DELIVERY METHODS NUTRITION & FITNESS FIELD TRIP CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION PARENT OUTREACH
6 Nutrition & Fitness Field Trip Students participate in four 45 minute workshops. Each workshop is aligned to the New Mexico Health Education Standards and Benchmarks. My Pyramid Vary Your Veggies & Focus on Fruits Fun with Food Power Up with Exercise
7 Just Be It! Jeopardy Provides introduction to day s activities. Introduces students to nutrition concepts they will be learning during the day. Questions reinforce concepts asked on the pre and post test.
8 My Pyramid Workshop Introduces students to the My Pyramid system. Illustrates what a serving size is within each food group. Students learn how the nutrients affect their bodies and contribute to good health.
9 Vary Your Veggies & Focus on Fruits Workshop Students learn about the nutritional qualities of vegetables and fruits. Importance of Hand washing. Children set goals to eat more fruits and vegetables. Taste test fresh fruits and vegetables.
10 Students practice how to prepare an easy and nutritious snack. Students learn how to read Nutrition Fact Labels, and how to compare food products. Introduces students to the effects Media has on eating habits. Fun with Food Facts
11 Power Up With Exercise Young people need 60 minutes of exercise each day. In this workshop students learn about the 3 types of exercise Aerobic Training Strength Training Flexibility
12 Field Trip Evaluation Results Pretest scores and post test scores were compared. Knowledge gain was 44% on average. Validity and reliability for the nutrition knowledge test was established. The test has 16 multiple choice questions.

Where s the Sugar? Food label comparison comparing applesauce canned in its own juice to fruit with added sugar. Fruit Fly Bingo Fruit Basket Upset Applesauce (the snack is combined with nutrition activity.) Discuss vegetable group. Potato sacks races, and potato races Crunchy Vegetable Burrito Banditos Students break into 6 groups and demonstrate what a serving size is for each group utilizing a variety of foods within the food group. Fats and oils group discuss the differences in solid and liquid fats, as well as other high fat condiments such as mayonnaise, salad dressing, etc. Students are provided a Fast Food Consumer Decision worksheet. Stations are set up and categorized regarding typical choices for breakfast, side orders, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches/nuggets/ strips; drinks; salads; chips; fruit smoothies. Students rate the best choice in each category. 22 Classroom Instruction Results Nutrition Knowledge Students increased their nutrition knowledge. Pretest scores and post test scores were compared. Knowledge gain was 61% on average. Statistically signihicant difference in knowledge test scores (p=.0001).
23 Classroom Instruction Results Fruit and Vegetable Intake, Physical Activity Students increased their intake of fruits and vegetables, and physical activity level. Pretest score for fruits was 2.32 and post test score was Statistically signihicant difference (p=.0016). Pretest score for vegetables was 1.85 and post test score was Statistically signihicant difference (p=.0001). Pretest score for activity was 3.52 and post test score was Statistically signihicant difference (p=.0101)
