1 Nutrition Cluster South Sudan South Sudan Crisis Response # JANUARY 4 NUTRITION CLUSTER COORDINATION I would like to take this opportunity to thank the nutrition cluster partners for excellent job done since the beginning of the current crisis. In the month of December 3, at the peak of the crisis, most partners worked with the cluster coordination team, some from Kampala, many from Nairobi and some from within Juba, to develop a robust strategic response framework that was later endorsed by the cluster SAG in Juba. I am happy that we now have all the partners back to South Sudan and the main task ahead of us is to ensure malnutrition is under control. In order to succeed in managing malnutrition in the country, the nutrition cluster partners will work toward effective coordination of partners response to the needs of affected population and management of information on the nutrition situation and response. At the same time, we will participate in inter-agency needs assessments, evaluation of nutrition situation and make use of the nutrition rapid response team that is already set. If need be, this team will be expanded. Many organisations already have some level of interventions in progress. However, with the current crisis and expected escalation of malnutrition, the need to scale up management of severe and moderate acute malnutrition cannot be overstated. We will also need to scale up prevention activities that will range from community sensitisation, micronutrient supplementation to promotion and protection of optimal infant and you child feeding. As you are all aware, a lot of UNICEF and WFP warehouses CENTRAL EQUATORIA JUBA Mid-January CARE conducted a rapid MUAC assessment in Nimule 4 boys, girls and 6 pregnant and lactating women (PLW) were assessed. children.9% of the children are severely malnourished, 7 children which is 8% are moderately malnourished. 4 PLW (6%) are, 3 PLW (%) are. Though the finding were not dire it is imperative that nutrition services are needed. MERLIN is coordinating with MSF in the management of acute malnutrition from Nimule hospital. MERLIN is operating the referral from the community and is in talks with WFP to secure resources and supplies for blanket supplementary feeding. The response inside the UN bases and UN Tomping in Juba continued, including efforts to the agreement by the health and nutrition partners Concern Worldwide to establish a stabilization center immediately in both camps to improve management of children with. were looted and some warehouses destroyed. This notwithstanding, we still have sufficient amount of supplementary food, RUSF, RUTF and therapeutic milk for planned interventions. With expected increase in needs and scale of interventions, there is great need for all partners to plan carefully how to scale up the current level of response activities. 2 Nutrition services are being offered by Concern Worldwide and IMC among other nutrition partners. The population in the IDP camps is noted to be mostly women and children and a few elderly men. Some children have been received without their parents but were being taken of care by relatives. To determine the nutritional needs of the IDP s MUAC screening has been ongoing conducted by both IMC and Concern, to date over 6, children Under 5 have been. Unity (Bentiu, Leer, Guit) CARE conducted a rapid assessment in Pariang and Rubkona and are operating Pariang Health Center. UNICEF has a nutritionist on the ground conducting screening and distributed cartons of BP5 THESO is working is responding to the nutritional needs of the IDPs and host community in Guit County World Relief have prepositioned nutrition supplies and responding to needs in Bentiu and Koch. MSF-Holland is conducting screening for malnutrition in Bentiu IDP camp and liaising with partners for their referral and management. The latest screening in the POC area for malnutrition was done by CARE. Jonglei (Bor, Pibor, Akobo, Pochalla, Ayod) IMC working in Akobo, they are managing malnutrition cases in collaboration with UNICEF and have restocked nutritional supplies. Tear Fund: Nutrition programs are being managed by local staff in Ayod, there are reports of IDPS still arriving from Malakal about 7, IDPS reported, supplies have been replenished. SCI and IMC are managing the nutrition programs in Bor. Challenges with transportation of nutrition supplies were reported earlier because of flights and security clearance. IMC conducted MUAC screening in the location and the report has been shared. MSF-B is running both the nutrition and health services in Dorein. Currently in the program 8 severely malnourished children are receiving outpatient treatment. Routine MUAC screenings of children from 6 to 59 months and pregnant women is done at the health facility level. IMC is running the nutrition program in Pochalla with OTP operational, a MUAC assessment has since been conducted in the area. Upper Nile (Malakal, Fangak, Pariang, Lankien) IMC is present on the ground and currently working from the UNIMIS compound they are re-establishing nutrition activities which include screening and management of acute malnutrition. GOAL: Is carrying out nutrition activities in Ulang, but hampered by communication challenges. Operations of their 4 OTPs in Baliet are on hold currently. UNKEA: Responding in Nasir has reported registering high numbers of IDPs arriving from Malakal. A nutritional assessment has been conducted cases of acute malnutrition are being managed they foresee challenges with inadequate supplies. MSF-H: Present in Nasir and receiving IDPs from Malakal and Jonglei, responding to nutrition cases. Reported adequate supplies to last months. Lankien full team on site all TFSP beneficiaries discharged with months supplies and have months stock in place. World Vision has distributed a total of 6.76MT to,568 beneficiaries (4795hh) in Malakal UNIMISS POC. The ration for 3 foods included Sorghum, Vegetable oil and Beans and is to last for 5 days. Page

CCM, MSF-CH and Plan International Implementing treatment of cases in OTP, Treatment of cases in TSFP and Treatment of cases in BSFP. Warrap (Abyei and Twic) ACF Conducted a rapid nutrition assessment in Math Awan camp approximately 8 household to households are settled there. Nutrition response includes referrals to stabilization center in Wunrok OTP and TSFP. GOAL Running 3 operations OTP in Twic County, all their nutrition staff on the ground nutrition screening conducted and and cases are admitted.
