1 Volume 13, Issue 3 September 2018 Label Reading for Phosphorus Phosphorus is a mineral found in foods that can build up in our blood There are two different types of phosphorus found in our food (see chart below) Natural Added Absorption Food Sources (This is not a complete list.) Nutrition Recommendations Your body absorbs about 50% of the phosphorus from natural food sources. Beans Dairy Nuts and Nut Butters Bran Products Meat Eggs Chocolate Include meat and eggs in your meals they help albumin levels Limit milk to 1/2 cup per day If prescribed binders, take them at the beginning of meals and snacks Your body absorbs about 90% of the phosphorus from added phosphates. 4 Label Reading for Phosphorus The FDA does not require phosphorus to be listed on the Nutrition Facts label However, if phosphorus is added to a food, it is required to be listed on the ingredient label It does not matter if the phosphorus additive is at the beginning or the end of the ingredient list Avoid all foods with phosphorus additives Common phosphorus additives include: Disodium phosphate Monosodium phosphate Sodium hexametaphosphate Potassium tripolyphosphate To control phosphorus levels: Phosphoric acid Read ingredient labels Tetrasodium pyrophosphate Avoid foods with phosphorus additives Sodium tripolyphosphate Take phosphate binders as directed Trisodium triphosphate COME and STAY for Dialysis treatments Recipe: Brandy Apple Crisp (medium potassium; low phosphorus) Ingredients: 4 cups peeled, coarsely chopped tart apples 3 Tbsp sugar 3 Tbsp brandy 2 Tsp lemon juice 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/8 tsp nutmeg 3/4 cup dry outs 1/4 cup brown sugar 2 Tbsp flour 2 Tbsp margarine Directions 1. Combine first 6 ingredients in an 8-inch square baking pan. Toss well; set aside. 2. Combine oats, brown sugar, and flour in a small bowl. Cut in margarine until well blended. 3. Sprinkle mixture over ingredients in 8-inch baking pan. 4. Bake at 350 F for 45 minutes Serves 6 portions Serving Size: 1/2 Cup Calories 203kcal Fat 5g Carbohydrates 38g Protein 2g Sodium 36mg Potassium 159mg Phosphorus 59mg P a g e 4

Overall lab values for all units improved over the course of the game. There were 7 more individuals with perfect nutrition related labs, 7 more individuals with improved nutrition related labs, and 12 fewer people with worsening nutrition related lab values from May through August.
10 Below are the lab report summary scorecards for each dialysis unit for the length of the game June-August. Scores for the units were based on lab averages for the units as a whole. Unit August Results: In general a score of: Plaza: 2.7 3= labs within defined limits Vinton: = improved from last month Inpatient: 2.6 on average however are still out of range PD: =no change from last month and are out of range <1= labs got worse and are out of range Unit averages are just for fun!
