Or did we just divide the body that way with a blade? 1
2 From the nape of the neck to the backs of the fingers is one coherent piece of connected myofascia - the Superficial Back Arm Line The Rules of the Game Follow the grain - a consistent fiber direction through the fascia and muscle No radical changes of direction or level Notice the myofascial tracks and the attachment stations Notice expresses and locals - the monarticular muscles hold posture Pay attention to switches where forces join or separate, and roundhouses where many forces cross Superficial Front Line the Protector & Superficial Back Line the Lifter 2
3 There are many possible lines - let s take a look at the Superficial Back Line first... 3
4 Epicranial fascia Supraorbital ridge Nuchal line Erector spinae Sacrotuberous ligament Hamstrings Triceps surae Plantar fascia Sacrum Ischial Tuberosity Heel Toes The Superficial Back Line laid out on a classroom skeleton The plantar aponeurosis is our first track 4
5 But real cadaver studies show connection The fascia forms a bridle or a cup around the heel And force is transmitted from Achilles tendon to plantar fascia and vice versa In this vision, the heel can be seen as the patella of the ankle - pushing the soft tissue away from the ankle fulcrum 5
6 The more the body leans forward, the tighter the SBL has to be Most anatomies separate out the parts - like the sacrotuberous ligament Anatomy Trains links the back muscles to the hamstrings via this ligament 6
7 The complex erectors are the next link in the chain From toes to nose, the SBL is one coherent unit 7
8 The Superficial Front Line Comes in two pieces - toes to hips, pelvis to head Is associated with the startle response Protects our most sensitive areas 8
9 The SFL includes the entire anterior compartment - (the retinaculae are thickenings of the crural fascia, not individual structures of their own) Tibialis anterior and the toe extensors 9
10 What s left when the lower SFL is removed: Check out: the interossous membrane where the patella lies the lateral intermuscular septum The Superficial Front Line in the thigh includes the entire quadriceps 10
11 The upper and lower tracks of the SFL are connected through the hip bone - they work together in flexion and extension. The temptation is to connect the lower and upper SFL using the inguinal ligament - but this would be breaking the straight line of pull rule The rectus abdominis carries us up to the 5th rib - and a switch to the front of the arms 11
12 The fascia carries right on up the front of the sternum and the back side of pectoralis major The last track is the SCM - the anterior head puller 12
13 Plantigrade human posture exposes our most soft and sensitive bits to the world The startle response can be seen as a shortening of the Superficial Front Line After you consider the SFL and SBL as distinct units, you have to consider the relationship between the two 13
