3 Mindfulness Story The story of baking ham. It is old but still very relevant. A 20 something year old mother cuts off the end of a ham before putting it in the oven to bake. Her 5 year old child asks why she cuts off the end of the ham-the mother does not know-but answers the 5 year old because her mom did it that way. The mom calls her mom-grandma-and asks why she cut off the ham-grandma answers because her mom did it that way as well Grandma calls her mom-great grandma-who answers: because her oven was too small to fit the whole ham! Mindfulness is about our moment to moment awareness. Even how and why mom cooks her ham a certain way.

4 Being in the moment changes us and begins to change the situation. I can feel guilty about the past, apprehensive about the future, but only in the present moment can I act. Abraham Maslow Mindfulness is being in the moment for teachers, therapist, leaders/managers, followers and health care professionals-to name just a few. Even the awareness of learning from mom how to bake a ham and why she cuts the ham is being in the moment.

11 Veterans Vets have doubled the suicide rate of non-vets. This does NOT count drug and alcohol related behaviors leading to the death of Vets. More active duty soldiers are dying from suicide then combat in both Iraq wars and the war in Afghanistan. It became evident as the study proceeded that it will be necessary for professionals dealing with treating PTSD is to find a way to STRETCH the distance between stimulus and response if we are to help the Vets. Often knee Jerk re-actions by Vets is creating problems for them.

12 What Did We Learn? There are many links to PTSD and Suicides in Vets. A major link seems to be a chain of events: Loss of job leads to socio-economic stressors leads to fading sense of well-being leading to increased occurrence of suicides. Depression is another documented factor leading to increased suicide rates a kind of final push when a vet becomes unemployed indicating a need to detect this type of trait possibility early. Of course, there is evidence of the constant replay in their mind of war related eventsliving in a terrible past-that cannot seem to be released. These also trigger the chain of events listed earlier. But, we also learned that MINDFULNESS TRAINING did work more successfully than standard interventions used at the time. Mindfulness created the STRETCH space needed for better life decisions.

18 What Is Trauma? Direct personal experience that involves actual or threatened: death; or serious injury; or extreme pain. Indirect by witnessing such an event, learning about experience of family member or close associate. Failure to discharge nervous system energy after trauma creates memories that are not integrated.
