6 POM ESPOND Professional Insensitivity Can occur to professionals who work with the public sector over long periods of time Some are not aware of how often they forget what the victim is going through. Professionals who are not empathetic towards their clients may have difficulty working with them. Some use past experiences as justification to assume they are all alike - stereotyping Victims perceive professional s actions as the action of the entire agency, or system itself. Providing equitable service across the board is warranted even when one s personal beliefs object. CISIS INTEVENTION Safety & Security Ventilation & Validation Predication & Preparation ESPOND National Organization for Victim Assistance 6
7 Empathy: ESPOND Communication Tell the victim, I m sorry David was murdered. Be mindful of you your tone and questioning; put yourself in the victim s shoes Acknowledge the frustration they must be going through Acknowledge the length of time that has passed between incident and today Be attuned to triggers: Anniversary dates, holidays, court dates Honesty: Do not make promises you can not keep If you say you will do something - Do it Vocabulary: Information: ESPOND Communication DO use the word murdered not killed DO use the word murdered not, DUI, accident or a crash DO use the victim s name, not the deceased, not the body Prompt; don t let them read about it in the paper Explanation of why decisions were made Provide narratives of what victims are about to see when viewing photographs 7
8 Process Verdict The Judicial System Normal to you is not normal for victims Uncomfortable setting Anxious around so many people What about what they want? Not Guilty: Delusional, Outrage, Isolation, ear of retaliation Guilty: Immediate reaction leads to worry about sentencing Sentencing Limited or light sentences may result in the same feelings of a not guilty verdict Victim Impact Statements Parole ESPOND Appeal educing e-victimization victimization occurring at different points in time ESIST e-victimization: Advancing Theory and Method.
