10 Culture Shock: Breaking It Down (group activity) Pass out handout of culture shock phases Each group is responsible for one phase Summarize on poster paper to present to group Come up with a real life example of that phase

11 Phase One: Honeymoon Characteristics: o Feeling positive about the culture o Everything is new and exciting o Desire to interact with locals o Observation period Things they will notice: o People dress differently o Signs are in a new language o Nonverbal communication is different o Etc.

12 Phase Two: Negotiation Feelings of newness begin to fade. You become forced to respond to the new culture and behaviors of people. Just speaking a language that is not your native language becomes exhausting and adds to your fatigue as you try to understand this new place. Characteristics: o Typically around the 3 month mark o The behavior of people is unusual and unpredictable o Begin to notice the differences and may resist the changes o Feel anxious o Mood swings of feeling anger, impatience, frustrations o Withdraw and become isolated

13 Phase Three: Adjustment Phase Four: Mastery Characteristics: o Typically around the 6-12 month mark o Become accustomed to the new culture and develop routines o Know what to expect o Things become more normal o New culture begins to make sense Characteristics: o Able to participate fully and comfortably o Does not mean they leave their culture behind, they just understand and can interact in both now

14 Symptoms of Culture Shock Physical Fear of physical contact with the host national Heath and safety are over stressed Absent-minded, far away stare Food from home is craved Use of alcohol/drugs Work quality declines Unsuccessful performance of daily tasks Psychological Anxiety and irritability Frustration and disorientation Loneliness and sense of isolation Rejection of others from host country Excessive fear of beign robbed, cheated, injured Misinterpretation of body language Self doubt Aggressive attitude Feeling helpless Feeling rejected

17 Tips for Intercultural Communication Be flexible, tolerant, and patient Speak slower, not louder. Write things down. Use handouts, visual aids, gestures Ask about the student and their experiences show interest Use simple language

18 Tips for Intercultural Communication cont. Try to withhold judgment about behaviors that are unfamiliar to you Paraphrase and check for understanding Smile! Understand that they might be feeling a lot of stress. Be careful with humor it is often difficult to understand jokes outside your culture
