W Highlights Epidemiological Highlights Week 12
W Highlights Total population of 866 and (84%) are under surveillance. 155 of health facilities enrolled. In week 12, a total of 77 alerts were triggered a comparable number on previous weeks (74 alerts in week 11). A health facility guide to reporting through EWARS and a poster informing Event Based Surveillance (EBS) reporting requirements and case definitions are currently being finalised and approved. A plan for dissemination of materials to partners is under development. The discussion about the implementation of community based surveillance in the camps is still ongoing with partners. The EWARS and diphtheria bulletins for week 12 are disseminated to all partners on Wednesday 28 March..
W Highlights Diphtheria As of 24 March 218, a total of diphtheria case-patients were reported in EWARS, including 131 (+27) new case-patients in week 12, slightly lower than the previous three weeks. 196 cases have been laboratory confirmed. The last laboratory confirmed case was reported on 7 March. There have been (+14) probable, and 279 (+13) suspected cases reported up to week 12. A total of 57 diphtheria case-patients have been reported from the host community; 14 were laboratory-confirmed; 33 probable and 1 suspected. As of now, 61 additional case-patients were excluded after laboratory testing was negative. No death has been reported. A total of 39 deaths (case-fatality proportion< 1%) were recorded as of 25 March. One death reported in week 11 tested negative for diphtheria. No deaths have occurred in host communities.
W Highlights Measles As of 24 March 218, a total of 1 34 suspected measles case were reported in EWARS from 31 December 218, including 5 new case-patients in week 12, slightly lower than the previous three week mean of 55 new case-patients (48 in week 11, 56 in week 1, 62 in week 9). The majority of cases reported in children less than five years of age. A rapid sampling strategy has been designed to Collect samples of approx. 6 patients over a seven day period, to verify ongoing measles transmission, beginning early April 218. A total of 1 samples per site will be collected within a period of 1 week, for all patients presenting with suspected measles at selected health facilities and for whom the Case Report Form (CRF) is filled out.
W Highlights Acute Jaundice Syndrome (AJS) As of 24 March 218, a total of case of AJS were reported in EWARS, including 11 new case-patients in week 12, roughly equivalent to the previous three week mean of 14 new case-patients (88 in week 11, 131 in week 1, 93 in week 9). Of AJS cases reported in week 12, slight more than 5% were male, and the majority of reports were for those aged greater than 5 years of age. AJS sampling ended on the 26 March 218.
