2 ASA I ASA II A normal healthy patient A patient with mild systemic disease ASA III A patient with severe systemic disease ASA IV A patient with severe systemic disease that is a constant threat to life

4 Mrs X 66years old, retired, smoker, Alcohol 8-10u/w Lung disease, emhysema, usual Sats 87-89% Depression, under psychiatrist s care. Steroids in the past Excessive thirst, pt thinks she may have Diabetes. Drugs: Inhalers only

5 ASA I A normal healthy patient Healthy non-smoking, no or minimal alcohol use ASA II A patient with mild systemic disease Mild diseases only without substantive functional limitations. Examples include (but not limited to): current smoker, social alcohol drinker, (<14 u/w ) pregnancy, obesity (30 < BMI < 40), well-controlled DM/HTN, mild lung disease

6 ASA III A patient with severe systemic disease Substantive functional limitations; One or more moderate to severe diseases. Examples include (but not limited to): poorly controlled DM or HTN, COPD, morbid obesity (BMI 40), active hepatitis, alcohol dependence or abuse, implanted pacemaker, moderate reduction of ejection fraction, ESRD undergoing regularly scheduled dialysis, premature infant PCA < 60 weeks, history (>3 months) of MI, CVA, TIA, or CAD/stents.

7 ASA IV A patient with severe systemic disease that is a constant threat to life Examples include (but not limited to): Recent ( < 3 months) MI, CVA, TIA, or CAD/stents, ongoing cardiac ischemia or severe valve dysfunction, severe reduction of ejection fraction, sepsis, DIC, ARD or ESRD not undergoing regularly scheduled dialysis

8 Mrs X 66years old, retired, smoker, Alcohol 8-10u/w Lung disease, emhysema, usual Sats 87-89% Depression, under psychiatrist s care. Steroids in the past Excessive thirst, pt thinks she may have Diabetes. Drugs: Inhalers only Minor Surg Procedure. At Induction P 64/min BP 140/70 O2Sats 87% Midazolam 0.5 mg Total time 45min Total Midaz 1.5mg Total Propofol 20mg Uneventful Sedation

9 Mrs X Escort took Mrs X back to Devon by car, no problems reported. How many of you would be happy with that? Mrs X was found dead the next morning. Did the Sedation contribute towards her Demise Post Mortem: No cause of death found.
