PT/PTA Team: #BetterTogether Becky Thomas, PT Krissa Reeves, PTA Objectives 1. Be able to define scope of practice for a PT and a PTA based on: a. APTA guidelines b. Wisconsin Practice Act 2. Be able to identify the characteristics of an effective team. 3. Be able to give examples of behaviors that build an effective team. 4. Be able to explain the decision making process for delegation of patient care to a PTA. 5. Be able to identify general red Flags for when a patient care needs reevaluated by the PT. 6. Be able to summarize the general model of the PT/PTA team 7. Be able to design a team model that best fits your clinical practice. Think-Pair-Share Timer Individually answer the question: 1. What do I know about the scope of practice of a PT or scope of work of a PTA? (anything from legal, ethical, personal experience, my friend s mother s niece says...) Then turn to your neighbor and Talk about what you know. Write down at least three ideas for a PT and PTA scope of practice.
What can each of us do? PT s Scope Professional (Guide to PT Practice) Jurisdictional (State Practice Act) Personal PTA s Scope Professional (Minimum Required Skills and Ethical Conduct) Jurisdictional (Practice Act and Chapter PT 5 Code) Personal OK, what about this TEAM thing First, what is a Team? A team is two or more people who interact dynamically, interdependently, and adaptively toward a common and valued goal; have specific roles or functions; and have a time-limited membership. (Sorbero, Farley, Mattke, &Lovejoy, 2008)
So what is Teamwork? Teamwork is the cooperative effort by individuals in the team to accomplish a common goal. (Sorbero, Farley, Mattke, &Lovejoy, 2008) Teamwork Competencies 1. Knowledge 2. Skills 3. Attitudes This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA COMMUNICATION This means using actual spoken-outloud language.
Think-Pair-Share Timer Individually answer the question: 1. What do I know about the PT/PTA Team Model? (anything from legal, ethical, personal experience, Twitter, Snap-Chat, Instagram...) Then turn to your neighbor and Talk about what you know. Write down at least two ideas for a good PT/PTA team approach to patient care. THE PT/PTA TEAM Changes with the transition to the DPT Vision 2020 to Now Delegation and Supervision Algorithms PTA Problem Solving Algorithm APTA Supervision Teamwork Models Decision Making PT considers the following prior to directing interventions to the PTA: Are the interventions within the scope of work of the PTA? Is the patient s condition sufficiently stable? Are the intervention outcomes sufficiently predictable? Is the intervention within the PTA s personal knowledge, skills, and abilities? Are there risks and liabilities that should be considered prior to directing interventions to the PTA? Would any payer requirements be affected by the involvement of the PTA in providing interventions? (APTA,PT/PTA Teamwork: Models in Delivering Patient Care, 2015)
Patient s Best Interest Activity Part 1 You will be grouped into groups based on practice setting. In your group assign a Recorder and Speaker You will be given a part of the APTA Supervision Teamwork Models that is related to your practice setting. In your group: 1. Discuss the model: Is this even do able? How different would it be from your current model? Does this make you nervous or excited? 2. Read the patient scenario examples. Do you agree with the decision making? Again, is this realistic? Activity Part 2 Based on what you now know, in your groups help each other do the following: 1. For each individual work place decide how the PT/PTA team model could be implemented. 2. Problem solve what the barriers might be and how they could be over come.
