Judgment and approach Students must be able to reflect on the importance of the ability to move and limitations on motion in humans of different ages, with and without disabilities. 3. Description of the main field of study The scientific basis for the main field of study of physiotherapy embraces knowledge about studies of the human being in motion in relation to the ability to understand, care for, control and use the body in an appropriate manner, and in view of the requirements placed on individuals by contextual factors. From a physiotherapy perspective, motion studies overlap with concepts relating to physical conditions, emotions and behaviour. It includes biomechanical, physiological and psychological factors, as well as perspectives of motion, and is affected by personal factors and environmental factors. Communication/interaction and learning are key components within the subject area. Studies within physiotherapy and movement science studies develop students knowledge of: how human health is affected with and through motion how motion conditions, motion capability and motion behaviour can be related to personal factors and environmental factors how initiatives and interventions based on physiotherapy and motion studies affect motion capability and participation physiotherapy initiatives and interventions based on an assessment of the health of the patient/client communicating with and directing patients/clients, both in healthpromotion and preventative work, and in treatment, habilitation and rehabilitation work interprofessional cooperation how new findings within the field of knowledge of physiotherapy can be evaluated.
6 Page 6 (9) Physiotherapy affects human health with and through motion. Competence within the main field of study is used for planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting physiotherapy initiatives. Based on a professional approach and in accordance with the ethical code of the profession, competence within the main field of study is used for planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting physiotherapy initiatives. This is done at individual, group or society levels, both for healthpromotion and preventative purposes, and for habilitation/rehabilitation. 4. Content and structure 4.1. Content The Study Programme in Physiotherapy is worth a total of 180 higher education credits, of which courses in the main field of study of physiotherapy make up more than half. The programme is organised into thematic areas comprising one or more courses. The education also includes courses in physiology, psychology and medical subjects. The programme provides a foundation for further specialisation within the specialist areas of physiotherapy. The thematic areas of The human being in motion, Excercise and Pain, and the individual Physiology and Psychology courses during the first year, aim to give students the theoretical foundation, basic physiotherapy skills and ability to communicate and make contact in a sensitive manner, which are required in ongoing education and in students future professional roles. The professional development towards becoming a physiotherapist begins with establishing a foundation for understanding the importance of motion for health through studies of human motion conditions, motion capability and motion behaviour. The component subjects are integrated in the theoretical basis, which comprises studies of human development, structure, locomotion and function, into which the component subjects are integrated. The model used as a basis for understanding and thus assessing and treating patients with various health problems is the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Methods of assessment and treatment are taught and applied in accordance with the physiotherapy process in order to develop skills in physiotherapy. Opportunities are provided for field studies which, in addition to knowledge of the subject, provide awareness of the profession, its breadth and organisation, its conditions and its place within both health and medical care systems and society as a whole. The Clinical physiotherapy thematic area comprises four courses, including Clinical Education Wards/Surgery (KUA/KUM). The work-based section of the education reinforces the integration of theoretical knowledge and professional skills. In addition, the foundation is laid for selfawareness, judgment and an ethical and professional attitude towards patients and others. Particular emphasis is placed on developing positive communication between the therapist and the patient/client. Students are also taught over the course of the education programme to deal with increasingly complex problem-solving and decision-making processes, and to develop a reflective way of working and an ability to be prepared to act as a physiotherapist. The Medical subjects courses aim to ensure that students gain a good
7 Page 7 (9) overview and acquire basic skills in the medical subjects which are relevant to physiotherapy work. The aim is that students should acquire knowledge of medical indications and contraindications for physiotherapy intervention. The Health promotion course aims to ensure that students acquire the knowledge and the tools needed to promote health at individual, group and society levels. The education introduces fundamental scientific theory and methods at an early stage, and students are coached in critical review in order to promote a scientific attitude and to lay the foundation for an evidence-based way of working. Students plan and carry out a degree project within the field of physiotherapy. Elective courses in physiotherapy aim to broaden and deepen knowledge in one of the specialist areas of physiotherapy. Elective cross-programme courses aim to complement physiotherapy skills and to prepare physiotherapists for increased teamwork within health and medical care and within society as a whole Structure Knowledge from the previous term forms the basis for studies in the subsequent term. The courses during the first year of study are based mainly at the university. Field studies with physiotherapists give students the opportunity to gain contact with other areas in which physiotherapists work. Clinical courses are work-based. During term six, students will take two elective courses, of which one will be within the main field of study and the other within a different subject. Elective courses in physiotherapy may be partly work-based. A degree project is carried out within the main field of study of physiotherapy. The education should provide the opportunity for interprofessional cooperation with students from other study programmes, in order both to provide increased knowledge and understanding of different professional healthcare groups, and to reinforce students own professional roles. Parts of the education can be carried out abroad within the framework of the programme s international exchange arrangements. As an element of this internationalisation, courses will be offered to students at universities with which the study programme has exchange agreements. The education should prepare students for life-long learning and ongoing professional development throughout their entire professional lives Pedagogical profile The education is based on a humanistic core view of the human being, which means that it should be based on confidence in students desire and ability to take responsibility for learning and development. The view of knowledge is based on it comprising theoretical knowledge, professional skills and a professional attitude, and on learning occurring within a social context. The composition of the studies is guided by opportunities to support students learning, both now and in the future. Students, teaching staff,
8 Page 8 (9) supervisors and patients/clients all constitute sources of learning. Reflection is seen as a tool for generating knowledge, and is an important element of learning. The aim is that the education should result in a professional identity which includes preparedness for action in working as a physiotherapist. The programme s teaching staff should organise learning situations, adapt content and teaching methods to suit each other, act as a resource, provide motivation and support students learning. A course s teaching methods are adapted in terms of objectives and content, students different ways of learning and organisational circumstances. As far as possible, the arenas for learning are based within the context where the knowledge acquired will be used. Some types of knowledge can be acquired individually, regardless of time and location. Such learning may, for example, take place through the use of literature, interactive media and/or web-based materials. Other types of knowledge require learning to take place in groups. A thematic area may contain a number of subjects, supporting the integration of different subject knowledge Teaching language The teaching language is Swedish, but courses may also be given in English. Literature in English and Swedish is used. 5. Transitional provisions Other guidelines 6.1. Grading scale The grades used are Fail, Pass or Pass with Distinction. Alternative grading scales may apply to elective courses or cross-programme courses. The grading scale is detailed in the course syllabus Requirements for admission to higher studies term For entrance to: the Physiotherapy 5 course, all courses from terms 1 and 2 must be passed. the Physiotherapy 6 course, the Physiotherapy 5 course must be passed. term 5, all courses up to and including term 3 and at least 15 higher education credits from term 4 must be passed. the elective course in physiotherapy, all courses up to and including term 4 and a minimum of 15 higher education credits from term 5 must be passed.
