Introduction The Harvard Battery Powered Isotonic Transducer was developed for use with chart recorders or computer interfaces where external power for transducers is necessary. The transducer can be powered from an internal battery or by an external DC source via two 2 mm sockets. The transducer is an optical wedge type and is linear through approximately 50 rotation of the beam. It has an ON/OFF switch and a LEVEL control, see Figure 1 on facing page. 2

5 Operating Procedure Make sure that you have a battery fitted or an external DC power source connected. NOTE: Do NOT use an external power source if a battery is fitted to the transducer!!! For isotonic applications, on the top of the transducer there is an upright for fixing a small bosshead clamp and spring. The other end of this spring can be attached to the transducer beam. If you want the transducer for isotonic measurements, then remove the spring and put it somewhere safe. Fix the isotonic transducer to a sturdy stand. Connect the isotonic transducer OUTPUT to the INPUT socket on your recorder or interface. On the front of the transducer, there is a LEVEL control. Set this to the center position. Switch the transducer ON. Hold the beam of the transducer in its mid position (i.e. horizontal). With the gain of your recording device set to zero, adjust the DC level (or balance) of your recording device so that its display is at its mid point. Set your recording device gain to a level suitable for 1 volt from the transducer output. Adjust the LEVEL control on the transducer to return your display to its center position. 4

6 Rotate your transducer beam counterclockwise to its stop. Your display should move upwards. With reference to Fig. 2 below, attach your preparation to the beam of the transducer so that when the preparation contracts and relaxes, the beam moves to either side of its horizontal position. Remember to counter-balance your beam with modelling clay or something similar. Adjust the gain control of your recording device to suit your experiment.
