2 Presentation Summaries: DAY ONE The BioFlex Solution An introduction to BioFlex Laser Therapy with an overview of the company s history are presented along with a brief introduction to the system which they will be trained on. Historical Perspectives of Laser Therapy This presentation covers the steps which led to the invention of the laser, the initial experiments which showed the beneficial effects of Laser Therapy, and finally, the development of the field to present day. Fundamentals Laser Therapy The presentation begins by introducing light as a particle and wave as well as reviewing the therapeutic wavelengths within the electromagnetic spectrum. The factors influencing the transmission of light into tissues (including melanin concentration, body type and metabolic age) are discussed, with explanation on adjusting various parameters to account for these factors and improve clinical outcomes. Parameters of Protocols The presentation will review the wavelengths and intensities which are used in Laser Therapy and explain why they are used in relation to the absorption spectra of water, hemoglobin and melanin. Topics will be discussed in an evidencebased format with reference to scientific research. The presentation also discusses the importance of various parameters of Laser Therapy, including: o Laser Classification o The differences between Lasers and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) o Power o Frequency and Duty Cycle o Wavelength and Depth of Penetration o Contact vs. Non-Contact Introduction to the BioFlex Professional System: Hardware and Software This presentation introduces the BioFlex Professional Laser Therapy System. The basic components of the software are covered including the inputting of patient data, adjusting patient factors, selecting a protocol and Page 2 of 5

3 starting a treatment. The 29 different area and pathology specific protocols are introduced, with demonstration of the anatomical and pathological tutor which can be used for the education of patients. Clinical Case Profiles This session reviews various cases (before and after) and pathologies successfully treated with Laser Therapy. The treatment approaches are presented (as an example) to highlight the assessment, protocol selection, application of therapy, frequency of treatments and expected results. Some examples of conditions referenced include rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative disc disease, herniated disc, muscle/tendon tear, sprains/strains, and tendonitis. Standard Placements for Treatment Heads Placement techniques for both the arrays and probes are covered for the most frequently treated conditions and areas. This lecture demonstrates the optimal treatment locations for the maximum penetration of the light while at the same time being comfortable for patients. The areas covered include the neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, lower back, hip, knee and ankle. Review of Day 1 The first day of lectures is reviewed and questions are answered about the material. DAY TWO Steps to Success BioFlex Practice Management Program This presentation helps practitioners identify target markets and design an effective marketing strategy. The marketing support programs offered by Meditech are outlined including websites, brochures, clinic videos, etc. Finally, marketing and advertising ideas which have been successfully implemented by customers for over 10 years are discussed Mechanisms of Action This lecture provides an overview of the proposed mechanisms of action of Laser Therapy including ATP synthesis, the temporary release of nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species and changes in cell membrane permeability. Further, the secondary and tertiary effects of Laser Therapy will be examined including DNA and RNA replication, angiogenesis and the response of endorphins, serotonin, bradykinins and growth factors, with emphasis on the impact on various pathologies. The lecture focuses on the three major mechanisms of Laser Therapy as they pertain to clinical applications: acceleration of the inflammatory process; tissue and wound healing; and pain reduction. The importance of treatment parameters and the physiological status of the target cells in determining outcome will be emphasized. A selection of research studies will discussed within the context of utilizing the appropriate dosages and wavelengths for achieving optimal clinical outcomes. Page 3 of 5

4 Laser Therapy Safety Safety precautions necessary to treat a patient with Laser Therapy are discussed in detail together with the built-in safety measures of the BioFlex Professional System. Precautions and contraindications when treating patients with Laser Therapy are also reviewed, including the use on cancerous tumours, patients who are pregnant and those taking specific medications. Software Application and Introduction to Customization This session provides an opportunity for all attendees to use the BioFlex Professional Laser Therapy System at a basic level. Each attendee will input a new patient into the software, make the appropriate factor adjustments, select a protocol from the existing library and then start a treatment. Customizing Treatment Protocols This lecture focuses on adjusting various parameters within the BioFlex System to treat different pathologies and conditions. The process of customizing parameters such as duration of steps, frequency, duty cycle and waveform to achieve optimal clinical outcomes and overcome plateaus are demonstrated. Navigation of the system will also demonstrate saving and accessing customized protocols for use in future cases or patient treatments. Simulated BioFlex Laser Therapy Lab Hands-On Practice This section will allow attendees to test their skills on simulated patients from actual cases which have been treated at the Meditech clinic. Attendees will be presented with case profiles including patient history and symptoms and will develop customized protocols based on the training they have received. Cases include patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, myofasciitis of the lumbar spine, fibromyalgia and lymphedema. Attendees will discuss the cases as a group with respect to developing protocols, treatment plans and placements. Certification Test A certification test is administered via and upon successful completion the attendees receive certificates outlining their completion of training. The test includes true and false, fill in the blanks and multiple choice questions. This certificate is recognized by professional liability insurance providers and the FDA. 5 SPEAKERS David Kunashko, DC David received an Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Molecular Biology and Molecular Genetics from the University of Toronto. He then completed his Chiropractic training at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto, Ontario. He has lectured extensively for several Colleges including the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. Since joining Meditech International, Dr. Kunashko has gained an extensive knowledge of all aspects of laser therapy with a particular focus on the research and clinical aspects of this revolutionary treatment method. He participates in our Certification Courses and lectures at meetings throughout Canada. Slava Kim, MD(INTL) Slava Kim is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) of Karaganda State Medical Academy in Kazakhstan. He carried out post graduate training in surgery and in 1998 completed his residency. Slava has published over 15 articles on a variety of topics including surgery, traumatology and biochemistry. Previously he has presented at a variety of medical-surgical conferences throughout Asia and Europe before moving to Canada in Shortly after arriving in Canada, Slava joined Meditech International and is currently the Clinic Director of Meditech Laser Rehabilitation Centre.
