Advances in Experimental Social Psychology,, Influence of social support on the relationship between interpersonal dependency and psychological distress Yoshiharu FUKUOKA (Faculty of Regional Cultural Policy and Management, Shizuoka University of Art and Culture) This study investigated the effect of social support on interpersonal dependency and psychological distress in 233 college students by conducting two surveys. In study 1, the relationship between interpersonal dependency and perceptions related to receiving and giving support was investigated. Subjects with higher interpersonal dependency had a stronger desire for social support, as well as higher resistance to receiving support. In study 2, the relationship between interpersonal dependency, satisfaction with potential supporters, and negative life stressors were examined. Interpersonal dependency significantly correlated with lower satisfaction with support and higher psychological distress. Path analyses showed that dissatisfaction with support networks and life stressors mediated the link between dependency and distress. Based on these results, the nature of good supportive relationships is discussed. Keywords: interpersonal dependency, social support, psychological distress, mediating effect, supportive relationships
