1 SOCIOLOGY OF MENTAL ILLNESS This course requires a prerequisite of Sociology 101. No exceptions Dr. Linda Carelli 920:307:01 lincarelli@comcast.net Spring 2017 Office hours: Thursday after class or by apt. There are times in life when the question of knowing if one can think differently than one thinks, and perceive differently than one sees, is absolutely necessary if one is going to go on looking and reflecting at all. (Michael Foucault 1985) The learning goals of this course will be to analyze mental health data applying sociological theories as well as integrating information from other approaches to the study of mental illness. Sociological theories will be explored in depth. The first part of the course explores the causal theories of mental illness including the medical model, and the sociological and psychological approaches to mental illness. Next, we will consider how a network of attitudes and structural arrangement, including social class, ethnicity, gender, marital status, and age influence the causes and response to mental distress. The final part of the course concerns various aspects of help seeking behaviors, mental health systems of care and mental health policies. Throughout we will hear the voices of those who experience mental illness to enhance an understanding and compassion for their human suffering. There will be an exam after each of the three parts of the course. Each exam counts for a third of the grade. There is no final comprehensive exam. All students must take the exams when they are scheduled. You will need a doctor s or otherwise official note to make up an exam. There will be one major extra-credit assignment given to the entire class and no individual extra-credit assignments. Students will be expected to regularly attend class. Participation is encouraged.
